Well, here's hoping. Bought some PALM options today in case this gets picked up widely in the media and bumps the stock a bit.

Anyway, I would love something to replace my Treo 700p...the iPhone isn't good for me since it probably won't run any of my medical software, and I'm on Verizon. I'd love a thin Treo with a nice wide screen and lots of storage. Not that that's what they're going to release tomorrow, I'm just saying.

the new cdma 755p when it comes to VZW might be what your looking for as it suppose to fix all the bugs the 700p had.

Yeah, but it's really an incremental upgrade. Screen is the same, and the form factor is only a hair thinner and lighter than the 700p. I want something like the leap from Treo 600 to 650. THAT was an upgrade!

It's Palm... what else have they given us?

How about PDAs that actually sold?

Should be interesting, but why would it be Verizon's iPhone killer? Cingular is just as likely to carry it as Verizon is, Cingular and Verizon both carry Treos... I hope its cool, and if Cingular has it that gives me another option along with the other Treos and Blackberrys to upgrade to in December. Assuming its even a cellphone type device sold through the cell companies.

Mac's

Perhaps this is the shot-in-the-arm that Palm needs as a company. It started with such a great product line and reputation, it's a pity to see it struggling so much. In all honesty, if they can offer an iPhone-like product with a more competitive package than Apple, I'd seriously consider it. Somehow, I doubt they'll be able to offer the ease-of-use of Apple products and can almost guarantee 'inoperability' with the Mac OS (it'll claim to sync, but won't do much but mount a disk on the desktop... leaving me to drag the songs and picts I want manually). But if it plays nicely with iTunes, iCal, & iPhoto, and comes with a nice browser without costing a fortune, I'd forego multi-touch and the Apple brand-name. Even being a Mac-user for most of my life, I'm not too blind to recognize a good product when I see it... unlike some people here..........

My piece of the Apple Empire is a 3 year old Shuffle, but my AT&T /Cingular contract is comming up for renewal, and Razr says g-bye to a new i-phone and a Leopard Mac Book for me and my Grandaughter:D PC guy is going Apple. To paraphrase "Pogo" (who?) I'se seen the future, and it's :apple:

I live about 10 minutes away from the event and I can't believe I did not know about this conference. Oh well I have to work and I don't think I could get in since it’s sold out.

Anyone notice that this announcement is EXACTLY one month prior to the June 30 iPhone launch date being thrown around. If I were verizon (or palm)... I would love to steal iPhone's thunder with an interesting device and not have to play 'catch up' later.

The iphone killer...

Palm Advances Mobile Computing with Its First Mobile Companion Product
from Palm by Palm, Inc.
Core News

Palm, Inc. today announced the Palm Foleo, world’s first smartphone companion product.

Foleo has a large screen and full size keyboard to view and edit email and office documents. Edits made on Foleo automatically are reflected on its paired smartphone and vice versa.

Foleo and its paired smartphone stay synchronized throughout the day or at the touch of a button.

Foleo turns on and off instantly, features fast navigation, a compact and elegant design, and a battery that lasts up to five hours of use.

U.S. availability for Foleo begins this summer with pricing expected to be $499 after an introductory $100 rebate.

Built on an open Linux-based platform,Palm hopes to replicate earlier success with developers by drawing a large community to create new applications that will extend the mobile companion’s capabilities. Already, Palm has partnered with DataViz and Opera Software, demonstrating ease with which applications can be ported to the Palm Foleo.

"Foleo is the most exciting product I have ever worked on. Smartphones will be the most prevalent personal computers on the planet, ultimately able to do everything that desktop computers can do. However, there are times when people need a large screen and full-size keyboard. As smartphones get smaller, this need increases. The Foleo completes the picture creating a mobile-computing system that sets a new standard in simplicity."

Quotes Attributable to Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm Inc.

“As we did with the PalmPilot more than a decade ago, and more recently with the Treo smartphone, Palm is driving innovation and capitalizing on emerging opportunities in mobile computing, a market full of potential. The Palm Foleo represents our first product in a new line of solutions that will redefine how people work while away from their desks. It starts today with a focus on wireless email, and we expect the Foleo to grow in features and expand its capabilities as the platform grows.”

Now this sounds very interesting, very useful. I hope the iPhone can benefit from something like this a few years down the track. Very interested in seeing the product now. Sounds good.

What interests me is whether this will actually be more convenient than carrying a laptop with you.

Sounds interesting :). It seems to me that as small portable devices get more and more powerful, they could replace laptops. But the problem is data-entry and viewing. Those devices have (naturally) small screens and keyboard, so while they have the power, their form-factor limits their use.

It shouldn't have to be this way. take a look at this. Psion released that thing in 1999, eight years ago! I fiddled with it in stores, but opted for the cheaper Psion Revo instead. But seriously, think about it:

Take the 5MX, keep the form-factor as is. Of course Moore's law has been working for eight years, so it could have maybe 20 times more CPU-power and memory than it did in 1999. It could also have 2 gigs of flash-storage with optional additional external storage. Give it WiFi and color-screen with higher resolution. It could also have backlit-keyboard. And they could sell it for around 500 bucks.

It would be perfectly doable. If you had a device like that, would you have any reason to carry a laptop with you?

EDIT: Damn I miss my Revo. That thing was amazing. Hell, I used it to type half of my thesis back in the day :).
