Will this bump you down to 3G speeds after the Data Cap Limit or stop all together?

Slow you down? Stop? Heck no, the'll just charge you for your overages. The faster you can rack up those charges the better.

It does say the dongle is 3G compatable but that just means that you can still use it at 3G speeds in the 98% of the country that doesn't have 4G yet.

Money, keep your hands off a my stack

Is it me, or are these data rates INSANE?
At the moment, Verizon must have an incredible amount of bandwidth spare, considering how few people will be on their LTE network.

To get this dongle you have to sign up for $1300?? and for just 5GB a month?
$1300 + tax for 120 GB of bandwidth.

That's just insane. What would the equivalent on 3G cost?

There can't be many people (business people) who actually NEED this: most business people will need only a few MB to access e-mail (and can happily take 3G speeds), although I'm sure many on these boards would want more. Not enough for Verizon to have a great business model.
Will they really sell many of these?

I agree, these prices look very high. The device should be free at these rates.

Those rates sure are expensive. I think I will stick to doing my work offline while I'm on the go.

Aren't we pass the Mac OS X compatible age... I guess not.

I get the sense that this website is slowly becoming a Verizon oriented rumor and news site ahead of Mac and iOS. Granted, Mac is part of this rumor and others like it associated with Verizon, but it sure seems to be geared primarily for Verizon first and other Mac associated stuff is supplemental.

This is just one man's opinion, feel free to disagree with me if you'd like... no harm no foul. I am not trying to start a war here, just merely an observation.

Same here. This is not a rumor, but a product announcement!

I do understand that there aren't enough rumors a day to go around, but then please rename the site or put in extra pages for news releases!

The Verizon saga played out over (unnecessary) multiple posts and once a rumour is confirmed, shouldn't it go way?

1) Jailbreak iPhone 4
2) Download tethering app from Cydia (28kb)
3) Enjoy 7mbps downstream in metro areas.
4) ???
5) Profit

I agree, I posted this in another thread.

Kickbacks?!

Also, if I were an American I may be mildly interested in some of the verizon news being churned out but as i'm not, along with a large percentage of viewers I would imagine, this is getting utterly boring.

Verizon has the iPhone. That's it. End

wish it was the end but it is no were near finished yet

I'm no Verizon fanboy, but I must admit that I just love seeing more Apple customers ditch AT&T. Some may argue that both Verizon and AT&T are both evil, but it is clear that Verizon is the lesser of the two evils.

And Sprint is the lesser of both evils because they offer 4G service, for less money, and do not cap their data.

I tested the Pantech 4G LTE Modem back on January 5th before the Mac version of VZAccess Manager was released. I found instructions on EVDO.com on how to set up a custom configuration in the System Preferences > Network. Worked like a charm (see attached -- the blurred part is the phone number assigned to the modem). Here's the link if you are curious and/or want to bypass the VZAccess Manager:
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/3479/63/

With the modem plugged into my MacBook Pro, I measured 20Mb/s downloads and 8Mb/s uploads on our city's 4G LTE network. I tried using Internet Sharing to allow the WiFi iPad to use the connection but could not get it to work.

I have an older plan with Verizon which is $60/month for a 3G modem. Looks like I should have checked their current plans sooner, as I can now "upgrade" to a cheaper plan!

If one were to look at the logo on the main page, they would see that the full title is: "MacRumors.com: news and rumors you care about". This site has always been about Apple-related news and credible rumors.

On my current Verizon plan, the connection will stop abruptly if I go over the data cap. Looks like the new plans will just charge you for the overage though. Yet another reason to consider upgrading!

Just a few words of warning from my experience with the previous VZ Access Manager: every time OSX updated, I had multiple problems connecting. I found it easier to uninstall and reinstall, then connect. It only took a few minutes, but then I got multiple warnings that I was running an "earlier version" of the software, etc. Verizon's customer service was useless (but polite about it). Never did resolve the issue.
Hope Apple and Big Red are communicating better these days.

vz - you su_k

- FIOS not available in my area for years yet you advertise it to death
- your mobile 4g is only available in a small amount of markets - what good does that do?
- why the high cost and data cap?
- sorta makes att not so bad after all

only good vz news is your finally getting iPhone - and hopefully help aapl stock price go higher

vz - get your act together

Wish they would make ExpressCard versions of these 4G modems. I have no interest in a bulky USB modem hanging off the side of my macbook pro.

One major problem is that no one is offering 4G, at least not what we were led to believe that 4G would be. The problem has become so pervasive that the powers-that-be have said: "Heck, if you want to call it '4G,' then it's '4G,' OK?" Perhaps, one day we will have 4G that is real 4G. My only fear is that it will be called "5G."

Not sure what you are on about. This device is designed specifically for the Verizon LTE network. Verizon has an LTE network up and operating in 38 major cities in the USA. Last time I checked LTE was in fact a 4G network.

could you share the network via the airport on you mac? like tethering.

Yes. I've turned my 11.6 Air into a MiFi many times. Works like gold.

What's annoying about the 4G offerings from Verizon? I dunno, they advertise these super-fast speeds, and then limit you to 5GB per month! If you watch streaming video for just a few hours, you will use up all your bandwidth. What's the point of having the fast speed if you're only using 5GB per month? Just use the slower network if you have those kind of limits. After all, you're probably not doing anything too bandwidth-intensive if you only need 5GB of total throughput per month.

I've used my 4G modem quite regularly. Hit about 1GB in a month. I think some people miss the point - they want to download HD movies and all this crap that a mobile internet solution is not designed for. I know they advertised it to do that, but it's not designed to do that. Get it for casual email, browsing, quick lookups, GPS, etc...reasonable data usage applications. Not sharing out to 5 computers downloading torrents.

And drivers are 32 bit only, so if you are booting in 64bit mode you can kiss it goodbye.

Why would you boot in 64 bit mode when Snow Leopard supports 32 and 64 bit modes concurrently? I don't get it.

I would much rather have an LTE mobile hotspot than one of these modems. No drivers needed and you can use it with all of your devices. I don't really understand the market for 3G wireless dongles when 3G mobile hotspots are available. All they need to do now is release a 4G mobile hotspot.

I really would like a 4G mobile hotspot. The problem is battery. I had the 3G MiFi and it was nice and all, but 3 hours battery life was EXTREMELY annoying. IF they decide to improve that tech to allow for, say, 12 hours of connected battery life, I'd be all over it. Even if it meant increasing its size a bit.

Having official support is good...but I just created a dialup profile directly and set it as CID 2 and I've had good experience with that.

If using a laptop, can't you hook the MiFi to the laptop to charge from your laptop's battery while its running your MiFi network? I know this would then shorten your laptop's battery supply, but if you have a MacBook at least you would get better than 3 hours (maybe 5 or 6)? I have not bought one of these yet -- but that was my laptop plan -- of course iPad would be limited to whatever the MiFi could give you in battery life.
