Re: New iApps: Any sign of a new iPhoto?

btw, if any of you know of a really great alternative for storing, viewing, organizing my photos I'd be delighted. On windoze I was using fototime's app, which was great, but I've deep-six'd the dark side, so now I'm stuck.

If you stick with iPhoto, check out iPhoto Library Manager by Brian Webster (you can find it on VersionTracker.com). It's a simple, intuitive app that I stuck in my Dock in place of the iPhoto icon. You launch it, pick the iPhoto library you want to use, then click a button to launch iPhoto with that library. Whenever your current library gets up to 650 MB (1 CD worth), just create a new one.

BTW, this is one of many cool tips I got from O'Reilly's Mac OS X Hacks book.

Not sure if anyone else receieved this (but someone must have, because it is full not even 12 hours from receiving it). I think this speaks very highly to the possibliity of new iSync (and possibly iApp in general) versions coming out very soon, probably before Sept. 9th.

"At 6 p.m. PST on Sept. 9 members of the iSync product team will be online for an exclusive live session with .Mac members who want to expand their iSync knowledge beyond the basics. Got questions about how the technology works? Interested in hearing about the latest phones you can sync with your Mac? This is your chance to hear directly from the people who work on the product. You'll have the opportunity to submit questions beforehand and during the online session.

Participation will be strictly limited to ensure a quality experience, so if you have a broadband connection (required) and want to join in, use the button below to sign up now. We're looking forward to a lively, interesting, and informative session."

Has anybody tryed, if QuickTime now is able to use the MPEG2-Importer?

At least the B21-version wouldn't enable MPEG2-editing, though it showed and installed the MPEG2-6.1-update through softwareupdate corrrectly after I installed the extension. It just wouldn't recognise the VOB or MPEG files...

Code Insight - where the IDE will display all attributes and Methods for a given class for example, upon typing "myObject." it will list all attributes and methods?

Since using code insight for years and years in Delphi and Java I cannot live without it!

Fortunately, xcode will have code completion also.. 🙂

My copy of XCode already does this. Of course as I use it for Obj-C you type [myobject and then wait a little bit and it pops up a list of the messages you can send. When you choose one it populates the arguements with placeholders that tell you the expected types. I might post some screen shots when I get home (on a Win 2k PC at the moment 🙁)

Could you give more details? Of all the apps, I've been wanting both Mail and iCal to be updated the most. I've been very happy with the updates that Mail has received so far (I'm only on 7B21), but have been very disappointed that Apple has seemed to ignore iCal.

Other than speed and general responsiveness, my three biggest complaints are: you can't have alarms set on for new appointments as a default, but must manually turn them on; the task list is as basic as it gets -- I'd like to see increased functionality there; lack of integration with Microsoft Exchange (especially via Mail.app when interfacing with Outlook users.)

Agreed with the first and second complaints, I never need the third so can't really comment.

As for everyones compaints about speed, I completely agree. Calander software isn't exactly the most intensive of software there is, there's definately something up. Although it's faster in Panther to be honest I'm not overly impressed. My only guess is they were pressured to release it on a deadline, and that the Panther version is still beta.

I've only just installed 7B39, and iCal isn't working. I'll extract it from the pkg's tonight. What do you want to know 🙂

That sounds really interesting. What did you receive that through?

Apps like Evocam and ohphone seem to send video fine.

cheers,

Hey!!!

I had problems with Illustrator, Indesign also photoshop with the last build...Any improvments?!!?!?!?!? I thought the last build rocked too!!!

Has anyone noticed a problem with Dreamweaver with the last few builds? It seems to quit anytime I click on the insert pic button.

The email about the iSync class on the 9th of September came in an email with the subject line: ".Mac Connection: August 21, 2003" from "Apple Computer <support@mac.com>". Not sure where I got signed up for it, but I always thought it was something that auto-sent to all .Mac subscribers.

I wouldn't get too excited, as it looks like it is completely full. What I think IS exciting, is the renewed interest in the application and furthermore, the correlation to this thread about new updaed iApps. I am guessing that if they are holding a "class" about iSync, then maybe there are some substantial new features that need explaining.

Also, something that I forgot to include, it has a line in the form about "To get the most of the Focus On: iSync session, participants should be familiar with the basic features of iSync. If you're just starting to use iSync, be sure to check out the iSync related tutorials in the .Mac Learning Center to get started."

I'm not overly fond of iPhoto, just because I'm not able to organize my photos in a way that makes sense to me.

Take a look at "photo", by Alex King, over at http://www.alexking.org/software/photos/. It's a PHP/MySQL solution, but it's not difficult to get those up and running on a system. It can be a bit of a hassle for some users, but I've found this program to be excellent.

Handles many more photos than iPhoto, has a decent interface, and is quick. The only downside is that it doesn't have the rudimentary editing features of iPhoto, nor does it have the display features (such as slideshows, etc.)

... as far as iSync, why isn't the Motorola v.120 supported!?

It's a popular phone! I have the USB cable and can use it as a wireless modem on my iBook when I need it, but iSync won't work with it.

That really annoys me, too, especially 'cuz I'm pretty sure that the 120 uses SyncML (I have an 'e').
Is there anything in the Panther release notes re: iSync and phone support?

Upgrade over previous seed gives me a lower case "a" key that doesn't work. Yet every other key, including capital "A", works fine.

WEIRD!

"broken" keys in 7B44

Look for an application conflct. I noticed lowercase-c responding oddly after installing 7B44. Something told me to quit CopyPaste (which played nicely with previous builds); having done so "c" once again works normally.

WHAT ABOUT APPLE'S WEBSITE?

I was wondering, with tabs being swept out of Panther, what's Apple gonna do to their web site, with all those constantly renamed tabs at the top of each page?

HA! Note to Apple: think ALL the way through before removing something so useful.

Tabs still exist - just reformed into a new visual element. A nicer one, IMHO.

And perhaps they HAVE though it all the way through, but you haven't. Why confuse the public by putting the Panther tabs on the website when only Jag is available to the public?

Does anybody have a fix for USB Overdrive taking over the Apple Keyboard yet? The volume/ejects keys don't work when overdrive does that.

Yup. I found the problem, it was Synergy, the iTunes controller I use. It's the hotkey support, the API must have changed or just be screwed up.

ADC and FTP

Well, I was actually able to use Panther and Safari to download from the ADC site. It mounts the ftp directory on the desktop correctly and allows you to drag and drop to a local folder. Nice. This hadn't worked for the seed images in either Jag or Panther, with Safari. Up to now I was forced to use IE or ftp command line to download the Panther beta images.

bash Shell in Panther 7B44 (rather than tcsh)

Woah! It appears as though tcsh has been replaced with bash as the default shell for Terminal. I've been intending to become more familiar with bash this summer, and I guess I now have added motivation. Of course we can change it back to tcsh or any other shell, but Apple must have a reason for switching to bash as the default, so I'll learn the differences in greater depth.

If I'm correct, bash is the most common shell used by Linux users. I'd like to find out Apple's motivation for the change, anyway.

Well it's nice to see the trash icon actually empties now, but 7B44 is all messed up for me.

This has to be the most unstable build yet. Out of the past three builds only one has been stable. That's not a good sign.

seeds, developers

Can anyone tell me how extensive the development of Panther is from when it was first released to developers until the day it will be on sale to the public. ie how many people are working on bug spotting and fixing and so on?

I was just thinking how it can be that tiny Apple can develop stuff so quickly and well, yet MS with their billions have a reputation for fobbing off unpolished software. Its obviously nothing to do with money. Is it the open source aspect of Darwin , or is that marketing hype, and it is only good luck that OSX 10.2 etc works so well?

It's due to many reasons, eg Jobs is very demanding to work for, there is a tighter-knit community, the standard of workers is higher, they are more regulated, Apple customers are very demanding.

I'm sure I read something along the lines of IE 3 for Windows had around 240 developers working on it...damn!
