I have a PaperLike and love it so far. The only thing is it is a PAIN IN THE BUTT to get it to go on without dust or small hairs under it.

Paperlike is a just a clever marketing campaign. I bought one thinking that it’s worth a try, but took it off after a few weeks. The short answer is that the “Paperlike” is really no different (actually a bit worse) than other cheap $5 antiglare film screen protector. I previously used iCarez antiglare film ($8 for two on Amazon) and it felt virtually the same as this Paperlike, and Paperlike has worse clarity. The product you really want is one that is only for sale in Japan (unfortunately), it’s made by Elecom. This thing is amazing. It’s not cheap ($25 USD), but it actually feels like paper. It’s as rough as regular laserjet paper and it has MUCH better clarity and less rainbowing than Paperlike.

Thanks for the link I went Amazon and purchased the Elecom screen protector on your advice I have not tried it out yet but I’m really excited that I was able to find it. They have limited stock but one day shipping and it was only $22, the PaperLike screen protectors have a two week window for delivery, you would think with all the hype they have created that they would have it in stock ready to ship by Amazon, two weeks is just too long to wait for something.
I will say that I have been using the PaperLike on my IPP 9.7” and have really enjoyed it, I haven’t had any issues with it and it has made my drawing and writing experience much more conducive to actually doing. I have pumped out a lot of artwork so far and the texture is great. I did watch the videos about the Elecom product and liked what I saw it is however the most expensive of the two as for $22 you only get one sheet as opposed to the 2 you get from PaperLike.
I just upgraded (finally) to the IPP 12.9” 2018 model with the second generation pencil I’ve yet to get it up and running as I just got it yesterday and had to wait until the other products arrived. I’m really looking forward to the larger screen and bigger workspace.
Thanks to everyone’s posts they really helped me find the right products

I bought the Elecom screen protector from ebay thanks to this thread and I made an account just so I could share my experience and hopefully help inform others.

First off, I never used the PaperLike brand as to me it seemed too expensive for something that possibly had even worse screen clarity than iCarez. I did like the iCarez protector, especially for the price, but I found they seemed to wear down and eventually even get weirdly smudgy and hard to clean. But again, they’re cheap, so I wasn’t too mad. There were times though, especially on a pure white screen, where the rainbow distortion effect really bothered me. Finding this thread made me curious about the Elecom protector, and I decided it was worth a try.

The clarity on the Elecom is WAY better. Before I removed my iCarez I pulled up a white screen and took a picture of the pixely, rainbow distortion, and then I did the same after installing the Elecom. A world of difference. (Hopefully I’m adding these images correctly, apologies if it goes badly.)

I do also want to highlight what I’ve found to be the one big drawback of the Elecom: it wears down my apple pencil nibs. It is definitely a rougher screen and while that doesn’t personally bother me while using my fingers or drawing, it does clearly wear the nibs down, eventually revealing metal. It’s worth mentioning that I’m an artist, so I’m drawing every day and for others it may not be so bad. It’s been nearly a year and I’ve gone through four nibs now [EDIT: I just double checked and I’ve actually only gone through three so far, yay], and my current one is getting close to done. I feel like this should be enough to make me want to remove the protector, as I saw NO wearing with the iCarez, but I honestly love the clarity so much I think it may be worth it anyway.

Thanks again to the folks in this thread, I’m grateful to have found a screen protector that works for me and I hope this helps me pay it forward a bit to anyone else trying to decide what they want to do.
I actually got the Elecom film protector off Amazon (the one with no reviews) and I really like it. I find it in between a clear protector and a matte one. The one I got is not really rough at all but definitely anti glare without the degradation in clarity. It also does a nice job not showing smudges and fingerprints. I do have 2 complaints - absurdly expensive and the cutout for the home button is U shaped rather than circular. All said and done, I’ll be keeping it on for hopefully a long time. The one I took off was 3 years old.

I literally didn't expect this thread to go on for this long

I'm using a 8$ matte screen protector and it works great

Paperlike already has a new 'improved' version of the screen protector coming out. For anyone that has purchased the previous one, they are making the new available at early bird pricing on Kickstarter. So if anyone has been interested, they may want to check Kickstarter out.

I am not sure if I post a link to the Kickstarter if it's considering advertising for it, even though I have nothing to do with them. Which is why I didn't post a link.

I just got the Paperlike2. So far so good. My only gripe thus far is that it didn’t ship with the items in the installation help video (I.e. only two stickers, no help sticker, two paper dry wipes and not the cloth). It was a pain to get it on dust free.

Great thread - thanks! Trying to buy the Elecom screen protector, but it has two main "paper-feel" options - Bond (rougher) and Smooth (less rough).

Which ones have you all been purchasing and what are your thoughts on the differences if you have tried both?

I haven't tried these, however, keep in mind that the rougher the surface is, the granier the picture will be. Personally, I would go for the least rough matte protector that is still not glossy that I can find (so matte, but not much - if you get what I'm saying).

But, again - I haven't tried the protectors you mention. And it is very subjective.

I’m so glad I ran across this old post. I mostly use my iPad Pro 12.9 2018 for watching movies and as my main “computer”. About 30% of the time I’m drawing or creating projects in ProCreate. That being said, I don’t want to lose clarity of my beautiful Retina display but I would like some “roughness” for when I’m drawing or writing. Is the Elecom still the popular vote for the best of both worlds?

Based on this thread, I picked up an Elecom protected and love it! It has a great feel with the Pencil. I highly recommend it.

It was trickier to install than other matte screen protectors. The adhesive/backside is on an oversized backing material that is awkward to handle. It would be much easier if it were cut the same size as the iPad. And you only get 1 for the price.

Review of paper like 2, after about 4h of total writing time, non-stop...

The initial friction is reduced by 50-60%.

If clean the screen (due to fat from hands), the friction still is 40/50% less then when first bought.

Can tell by 2 ways: (1) if write on edges, where pencil hardly goes, will hear/feel proper friction (2) writing feel is now much closer to e-ink onyx tablet. Whereas initially, there was BIG NOTICABLE and pleasant difference.

Conclusion: Already thinking about testing Elecom.

Not liking that pleasant friction is gone on paperlike2, in only 4 weeks.

I just bought and installed an iCarez anti-glare screen protector and I’m really digging it so far. It was far less expensive than the Paper Like version, easy to install and has a nice feel and sound when using the Pencil. It also helps hide more of the fingerprints I couldn’t not see, that were driving me crazy on the iPad Pro’s screen.

Based on your comment and some others, I ordered an Elecom for my Mini 5. I’ve had an iCarez on it and on my iPP 11. Not thrilled with the installation process for the Elecom but I didn’t have dust or bubbles so that’s good.

I got the one for smooth drawing. Someone mentioned that the clarity is better than other matte protectors and that seems to be the case. I’m really happy with the “tooth”. The barely discernible grit feels so good to my touch.

The best thing, though, is the way the pencil feels in Procreate. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I was using a fine, soft, smooth crayon or oil pastel. I don’t know how a hard plastic tip on a screen protector over glass can feel like a buttery smooth drawing tool, but it does. Stroking the same pencil over the iCarez on the iPP 11 (just for the feel, obviously the pencil doesn’t do anything) doesn’t even feel like the same pencil.

Ordered one for iPP 11 and it’s here but I haven’t had a chance to install it.

I bought the Elecon a couple of years ago. I love the feel with the pencil and the clarity is more clear than with an anti-glare. It’s not cheap but it’s one of the best that I’ve used.

I used a MiiKARE screen protector (matte finish). Was £9.99 off Amazon. Why not more expensive? I wasn't convinced I would like a paper feel to the screen.

Turns out I much prefer it 😀 finger prints on the screen (with no protector) were noticeable when moving the pen across the screen.
