Paperlike is a just a clever marketing campaign. I bought one thinking that it’s worth a try, but took it off after a few weeks. The short answer is that the “Paperlike” is really no different (actually a bit worse) than other cheap $5 antiglare film screen protector. I previously used iCarez antiglare film ($8 for two on Amazon) and it felt virtually the same as this Paperlike, and Paperlike has worse clarity. The product you really want is one that is only for sale in Japan (unfortunately), it’s made by Elecom. This thing is amazing. It’s not cheap ($25 USD), but it actually feels like paper. It’s as rough as regular laserjet paper and it has MUCH better clarity and less rainbowing than Paperlike.

I actually got the Elecom film protector off Amazon (the one with no reviews) and I really like it. I find it in between a clear protector and a matte one. The one I got is not really rough at all but definitely anti glare without the degradation in clarity. It also does a nice job not showing smudges and fingerprints. I do have 2 complaints - absurdly expensive and the cutout for the home button is U shaped rather than circular. All said and done, I’ll be keeping it on for hopefully a long time. The one I took off was 3 years old.I bought the Elecom screen protector from ebay thanks to this thread and I made an account just so I could share my experience and hopefully help inform others.
First off, I never used the PaperLike brand as to me it seemed too expensive for something that possibly had even worse screen clarity than iCarez. I did like the iCarez protector, especially for the price, but I found they seemed to wear down and eventually even get weirdly smudgy and hard to clean. But again, they’re cheap, so I wasn’t too mad. There were times though, especially on a pure white screen, where the rainbow distortion effect really bothered me. Finding this thread made me curious about the Elecom protector, and I decided it was worth a try.
The clarity on the Elecom is WAY better. Before I removed my iCarez I pulled up a white screen and took a picture of the pixely, rainbow distortion, and then I did the same after installing the Elecom. A world of difference. (Hopefully I’m adding these images correctly, apologies if it goes badly.)

I do also want to highlight what I’ve found to be the one big drawback of the Elecom: it wears down my apple pencil nibs. It is definitely a rougher screen and while that doesn’t personally bother me while using my fingers or drawing, it does clearly wear the nibs down, eventually revealing metal. It’s worth mentioning that I’m an artist, so I’m drawing every day and for others it may not be so bad. It’s been nearly a year and I’ve gone through four nibs now [EDIT: I just double checked and I’ve actually only gone through three so far, yay], and my current one is getting close to done. I feel like this should be enough to make me want to remove the protector, as I saw NO wearing with the iCarez, but I honestly love the clarity so much I think it may be worth it anyway.
Thanks again to the folks in this thread, I’m grateful to have found a screen protector that works for me and I hope this helps me pay it forward a bit to anyone else trying to decide what they want to do.
I literally didn't expect this thread to go on for this long
I'm using a 8$ matte screen protector and it works great
Great thread - thanks! Trying to buy the Elecom screen protector, but it has two main "paper-feel" options - Bond (rougher) and Smooth (less rough).
Which ones have you all been purchasing and what are your thoughts on the differences if you have tried both?
Based on your comment and some others, I ordered an Elecom for my Mini 5. I’ve had an iCarez on it and on my iPP 11. Not thrilled with the installation process for the Elecom but I didn’t have dust or bubbles so that’s good.Based on this thread, I picked up an Elecom protected and love it! It has a great feel with the Pencil. I highly recommend it.
It was trickier to install than other matte screen protectors. The adhesive/backside is on an oversized backing material that is awkward to handle. It would be much easier if it were cut the same size as the iPad. And you only get 1 for the price.
I bought the Elecon a couple of years ago. I love the feel with the pencil and the clarity is more clear than with an anti-glare. It’s not cheap but it’s one of the best that I’ve used.Review of paper like 2, after about 4h of total writing time, non-stop...
The initial friction is reduced by 50-60%.
If clean the screen (due to fat from hands), the friction still is 40/50% less then when first bought.
Can tell by 2 ways: (1) if write on edges, where pencil hardly goes, will hear/feel proper friction (2) writing feel is now much closer to e-ink onyx tablet. Whereas initially, there was BIG NOTICABLE and pleasant difference.
Conclusion: Already thinking about testing Elecom.
Not liking that pleasant friction is gone on paperlike2, in only 4 weeks.
