However, I did have to enter the Microsoft Insider program to download the Windows 11 ARM 64 beta install file. There does not appear to be a way to Activate this beta. Will not accept my Windows 10 Pro key. We will see if I can keep using it without Activation.

I have never really understood Microsoft activation, but my release version Windows 11 ARM activated from my Microsoft account, using a license I originally purchased as retail Window 7. I purchased a retail Windows 8 license as well which I think is also linked to my Microsoft account.

Yea it automatically downloaded Windows 11 ARM for me but I had to join insider program to get updates so IIS worked. So far its ok for me on the M1. IIS works now with developer insider updates, my company's platform installs and runs fine, visual studio 22 is good.

Right now the only issue I am facing is SQL Server. It fails install every time and I have not been able to find a solution which sucks. I have a fully loaded M1 max 16 inch on order. I have been testing all this on my wife's 14 inch M1. I really hope I can find a solution to this SQL Server issue or my brand new $5k computer will be useless to me. =]

Anyone know anything?

I had this in my internal work documents linking to this issue - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/an...t-make-sql-server-work-in-windows-11-pre.html

Parallels 17 user if you install Windows 11 and want to install SQL Server,
you can install 32bit (x86) version SQL ,
include SQL Server 12 and SQL Server 14.

Yes I have seen that 2014 worked, I must admit I was hoping that my only option would not be to use an almost decade old version. But beggars can't be choosers I suppose. Thank you for reply! I believe 2014 will work fine with my platform but just sucks but thats the game we play as tech lovers! =]

My enterprise key for Windows 10 worked activating Windows 11 ARM in Parallels. Something at some point changed on the back end at Microsoft or a change in an update allowed it to work. When I first installed Windows 11 ARM I tried my enterprise key and it did not work. A month later tried it again and it activated. For my limited use Windows 11 works great on my M1 Max and I love the new look while at the same time still being Windows and not dealing with a host of incompatible OS issues that come with the regular OS releases from Apple.

If you are using the automated setup, you will fail every time with a Pro key (at least from my experience). The automated setup I believe defaults to Home. My best "guess" is if you are using an OEM key, those are suppose to be tied to hardware purchases. Microsoft really enjoys making licensing software frustrating.

The only way to get it to work is do a custom installation, and during the installation select Windows 11 Pro.

I don't know if this is an ARM thing or a "Microsoft being Microsoft" thing. I could have sworn at least at first it was relatively easy to switch simply by just putting in your Pro key, it would restart, and everything would be good.

I obtained my Windows 11 from Parallels 17.1.1 when they made the retail version available from with the app. I activated it from my Microsoft Account which is linked to a Pro key. So now I have an activated Windows 11 Pro retail version.
I agree about the mysteries of Windows activation! I think the important thing may be to activate via MS account, but don't know for sure. There is some discussion about Pro vs Home and activation in post #50 here.

Yes but then you have to buy it. My win10 code that I bought only recently doesn't work, although another post said it should.
The last full retail Windows license I bought was Windows 8. I also previously bought Windows 7. The serials are linked to my Microsoft Account, The ARM versions of Windows 10, initially, then Windows 11 have been activated from my MS account using these old retail licenses. All above board.

I too bought a Windows 10 Pro license and matched it up to my Outlook account. Initially I had to sign up for the Windows Insider Program to get Windows 11 Arm installed on my M1 MBP but now it shows paid and registered <shrug> - I wasn't paying attention as to when this happened.

But just wanted to voice - really handy having this linked to my Microsoft Account. Sign in with that and everything is automatic. Works really well.

Wanted to also comment that Windows 11 Arm works AMAZINGLY well on Parallels on my M1 Max. So much so it's actually considerably faster than Crossover for Age of Empires and other games. I can do Homeworld, Star Trek Armada, and a host (dozens) of old games that only worked on Windows 98 - all running near native speed without problem on 11 Arm, LOL. I've been in computing heaven with this laptop.
