Unfortunately, like many people I've had the misfortune of trying to work with Parallels tech support. It is pretty much non-existent. I am sorry to say this, because I do want to support MacRumors - but FWIW I strongly recommend people do not buy Parallels. I regret having done so. When it came time to upgrade to 3.0 (which was supposed to be free to me, but that's the least of my complaints), I instead took that opportunity to pre-order VMware Fusion for $39.99.

It is for me. Version 2 use to lock up my Mac Everytime a Windows update came and rudly rebooted itself. Version 3 doesn't lockup my mac on me anymore. Also being able to take snapshots is useful and a quick backup.

Version 2 is stable for me, although a little slow. It has really only crashed twice--and only once when it mattered.

Maybe I will try the public beta of Fusion. Everyone seems so excited about it.

Thanks but I'll pass. I'd rather buy a full version of Fusion then a decreased upgrade for Parallels. The mickey mouse way they handle upgrades (the least of which is software that is in no way ready to be released as a final), on the fly discounts without being able to demo the software, and generally poor interaction with their customers (VM's site has someone on their forums who actually takes ideas back to the developers.) has led me to say goodbye to Parallels.

I'm in

on the fly discounts without being able to demo the software,

I've never had a problem with getting a demo key from them and I'm using both the win32 and os x versions.

I first tried the vmware and virtual pc under vista and had issues, parallels in vista seems to work for me.

I'll upgrade because it really works for what I need it to do.

I use vmware at work and they could use the competition. Parallels seems like a smaller company (and newer) and have a ways to go to get the vmware's size.

Lame. I bought Parallels once already. All future upgrades should be free. Ripoff! I'll just download it.

So you think that your purchase entitles you to free upgrades in perpetuity? What commercial program offers that?

I actually remember seeing on the Parallels website that you're entitled to free Parallels Desktop upgrades for life. For some reason that's gone now

EDIT: Just found that you'll only get a free upgrade if you bought Parallels Desktop after May 1, 2007, or if you got Upgrade Protection during their Christmas Holidays special offer.. etc (http://kb.parallels.com/entry/69/298/). I still remember seeing free upgrades for life somewhere though.

I don't remember seeing that anywhere, but I haven't paid much attention to the product or the site. If you know what you are looking for, you can start here:

I did a Google search for: parallels free upgrades for life

and it did return several examples, the best I can see is that for certain periods, they did offer a 1 year free upgrade plan. People had troubles with the support as it appeared that they reneged on it, but supposedly the issue was resolved.

Resolved? Uh... no. Certainly not in my case, and not in the cases of many others that got shafted. But I imagine the noise level is abating on the Parallels forums, since most of us complainers got tired of Parallels' non-response and eventually just walked away.

Their support sucks, plain and simple. Most of the time they don't respond at all; and the one time they did respond to me it was obvious that the "tech" support person was completely clueless.
