I've stuck and probably will stay with VirtualBox. It's nothing do to with cost issues, oh no. No, it's because it's the only one that will let me play Worms Armageddon without any graphical hitches! :D

I'd guessed there was a new version on the way after receiving a flood of emails from Parallels a few weeks ago offering special offers to upgrade to version 5.

Fusion and Parallels seem to leapfrog each other performance-wise with each subsequent release. Parallels 5 is faster for me than Fusion, so that's what I'm using now. I've been disappointed with Fusion's performance lately. Looking forward to checking out Parallels 6 as well as the next version of Fusion. Virtualization is still not as seamless or speedy as it needs to be. I tend to angrily dump one product and move to the other far too frequently.

Or perhaps the anger comes primarily from Windows itself? ;)

I seriously hate parellels. I have version 4 on my machine because there is just one application in Windows that I have to use with my work that is unavailable on Mac. I did try CrossOver, but neither they or the people who make the Windows Software (they were both very helpful) could help me to get it to authorize on OSX.

Parellels seem to like to spam you with pop up messages, etc. Their customer service is horrendous and quite honestly it has screwed up my Windows authorization on more than one occasion. If I play games on Windows I do it using Bootcamp.

I actually have a free copy of Parrellels 5 which I bought as part of a bundle, but I am afraid of installing it in case it screws up my machine again. I certainly will not be installing version 6. Should the one piece of Windows software I use become OS X friendly then I will delete Parrellels with pleasure.

I also really hate their cheesy hard American sell videos on their website.

Nope not a Parellels fan at all.

Honestly before Parallels 5 I wasn't a fan, but when I got Parallels 5 it works great. I have never tried VMWare Fusion to compare, however.

TUAW reports on one reader spotting the retail packaging for Parallels 6 at a local Fry's store:Version 6 hasn't yet been officially announced yet, but apparently is undergoing testing. So, if you were on the market for a virtualization client, it may be best to wait a bit longer.

Article Link: Parallels 6 Prematurely Appears on Store Shelves

How the heck can it 'undergo more testing' if it has already been manufactured and on the shelf? Something is strange with the way it has been explained, could someone give me a heads up on what is really happening?

Why the hell do people use Parallels? It's based on QTApp, It's not even a real OS X Cocoa application. You know what that means? It's also slow, it has terrible USB support, and can't do things like say be used to update the firmware on a windows only updated via usb.

It's a piece of crap that installs tons of hidden files, the way it access bootcamp partitions it awful as well, if it crashes it can leave your partition screwed because it actually inserts stuff into the boot record of the partition…

Use VMware fusion, it was written by former apple employees, and actual people who know how to use xcode and make things like "GASP" ALL USB devices 100% supported just like they would be in real windows…

Not to mention the hacking they do to OS X kernel (Parallels) to get it to work with multiple processors. If you want to screw up your mac os x machine, It's like installing APE or something go right ahead and use parallels, which is coded by a russian crew who used to write OS/2 software.

VMware Fusion is code checked by the NSA to insure security with VMs because they actually use it.

Parallels doesn't properly sandbox your stuff, so a windows virus on bootcamp through parallels could VERY easily wipe out all your mac stuff too.

That won't happen on Fusion…

Calm....the *****....down!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.6; en-gb; Archos5 Build/Donut) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

I'll also ask the question how retail copies are out there if it isn't finished? Very odd! :p

Virtualbox does what I need it to in OSX and if I ever need more performance, I'll bootcamp it (or use my pc).

Because Vmware Fusion CAN'T run some apps.

news from HK

HK will release on 9/16 and if you bought after 8/15 you'll entitled to get the new version.

Your mistake was in buying Parallels. :( Virtual Box (free) or VMWare Fusion (commercial) are much faster and more reliable in my experience. I was sorry I ever upgraded to version 5 of Parallels. It's so slow compared to the prior release, I only use it as a last resort. I use VMWare or VBox depending on which supports the client best for my daily VM needs.

Vmware is good at some things and Parallels is better at others if your trying to run certain apps ..... I'm sorry Vmware just can't run them. Basically all due to its inferior graphics support. Out of all of them Parallels handles emulation the best and for the more obscure apps like Haiku OS or Openstep I have found Vmware or Virtualbox seem to work better..... mainly because this is how they create the virtual image of the os. But as far as running windows Parallels is much better.... faster .... uses less power on my laptop.... and it can run apps that the others can't

I use emulation solely to test websites on Internet Exploder. VMWare Fusion is more than enough so far. Although I havn't tried Parallels yet.

I can't remember the last time this happened ... where an app was released to retail before it was available electronically

Did someone say its coming out on the 16th? I was hoping tomm we would get the full details .... let us pray

I've switched between versions and out of the current offerings between Parallels and VMWare, I far prefer Parallels. It's much quicker than Fusion and I've had no problems with it at all.

Do you guys using Parallels 5 notice any lag? I ask because I installed a trial version of Parallels 5 on my late-2008 13" Macbook. Didn't run nearly as smoothly as I would've expected. Wondering if perhaps one of the current Macbook Pros would run it without any lag.

Well lets see. You ran it on an old machine. 2008 MacBook.. what did it have in there, some 2GHz Core 2 Duo? Merom, maybe. And im sure some crappy Intel integrate graphics. How much ram? 1 or 2GB?

Of course it would run laggy. So far, my current MBP has been the best experience. 4 Threads (2 Core, 2 HyperThreads), 8GB Ram, and a Powerful GPU to accelerate Windows graphics, and a fast Hard drive for fast virtual drive access.

Im sure that if you tried parallels now, with say V6, on a current computer, say the current MBP, you would have a totally different experience entirely.

I ran Parallels 4 and it was complete junk. When I looked for support it was non-existant. Later I learned that the issues I ran into were "fixed" in Parallels 5.

I bought Fusion and never looked back. It works great.

The product has a very messy install -- scattering components all over the filesystem. It can't be neatly un-installed and requires Parallels un-installer...

Hmmm. That's funny... I switched from VMWare to Parallels about 6 months ago due to performance issues, and had this uninstaller issue with VMWare.

Parallels has such bad customer service, virtually no upgrade pricing.. I think both VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox are better deals for their own reasons. I had parallels v2 and never bothered to upgrade because of the upgrade pricing BS.

I have gotten several emails from them to upgrade to Parallels 5 for $39.99. Go to their website and subscribe to their email list.

I wonder when Fusion will get its next update ?
I have nothing against parallels but I've been happy with Fusion since the beta so it's what I've stuck with.

Parallels 2 was very annoying, but 5 is significantly better. If your opinion is based on 4 year old software, it probably isn't very valid in 2010. Hell, I hear Windows is almost usable now. ;)

Upgrades have always been $40 from what I've seen, with lower prices or free for recent purchasers. I got v5 for $10 since I had upgraded to 4 a month earlier or so.

Their customer service is non-existant. That I agree about. If you have any problems, just look for forum help, the company won't.

Happy Parallels 5 user here, looking forward to version 6. I, too, was caught by surprise when I first saw this rumor... I was not expecting Parallels 6 to come out so soon. Hey - if it makes my Windows experience better, I'm all for it. :D

I'm honestly not too sure I'll bother upgrading. The reason is not that I don't like Parallels 5 but quite the opposite. I'm currently running Parallels 5 on a Core i7 iMac with 8GB RAM so my Windows 7 VM that I use for work runs like a greased weasel. Given the performance that I see I don't think this really can be topped and therefore buying the upgrade may prove to be a waste of money. Certainly I'm damned if I can tell the difference between my VM and native performance.

There's sure a lot of hatred for Parallels here. No, I don't work for them, but I have had nothing but good experiences with Parallels. I haven't had it blow away or corrupt a Boot Camp partition; I haven't had it crash or cause other spurious problems; I use Linux in Parallels quite frequently.

The only problem I had with Parallels was with an error in configuration of my hackintosh (my fault). Once that was corrected, Parallels runs like a dream on my Core i7.

That being said, I use Ubuntu as my host OS at work (no Macs, so says the COO) and use Oracle VirtualBox. (Sounds weird calling it Oracle VirtualBox!) It doesn't support USB connectivity, at least under Linux, which dramatically limits its usefulness.

Guys, I bought Parallels 5 two weeks ago... yikes!
Do you think I can get a free upgrade to Parallels 6?
