Parallels 9 is SLOWER than Parallels 8 for me.
I think unplugging the power adaptor, triggering 'power saving mode' slows it down considerably till it's unusable for me. I'm just doing word processing.

Some bug with power management.

I was pretty pissed off to receive an e-mail stating "You can upgrade early for $49.99... " and when trying to upgrade, to see that they actually try to bill me "Euro 49.99", which is 40-50% more.

I sent a ticket to their support and got a standard message: "blah-blah, you are located in Europe so you have to pay European prices".

I'm OK with that IF they would have e-mailed me "you can upgrade for 49.99 EUROS".

I'm pretty sure a lot of people didn't checked the currency and just clicked "Buy". I'm really pissed about this, and I consider this a bad commercial practice. You don't play with the people's money, if you say a price, you bill that price, not something else!!!

Real world performance?

I'd be interested to know if anybody sees any significant gains when they start using the 'GM' version in a few days, as Parallels seem to think pretty highly of themselves.
Specifically is there any difference in the Windows Experience index or even any seat of the pants improvement?

I use Parallels for gaming so it could be a worthwhile investment for me - I don't know anything at all about DirectX but they seem to have made some gains here. If it's that much of a real improvement sign me up for a copy. Again.

There is a nasty bug in Parallels v9 which causes some previous VMs to be almost unusable. My Win7 (64bit) on Parallels Desktop v9 keeps dropping devices in Device Manager and refreshing and adding them back again. Work around provided by support didn't fix the problem for me. So now I'm considering rolling back to Parallels v8 until they fix this issue.

There is a busy thread on the Parallels Desktop support forum about the issue.
I had the same problem and raised a ticket, response was to to point me at this article: http://kb.parallels.com/en/117020.
It resolved the problem for me.

I replied the email receipt for a refund and received it.
Anyone else not happy wit P9 can ask for a refund asap.

cannot confirm the issue. purchased a couple of hours ago, even on battery it's working nicely. i'm running P9 on OSX 10.8.4 on a maxxed out MBPc 15" early 2011.

Anyone seen 8 on sale below the $49.99?

I recall newegg did this last time and I was able to get the 8 upgrade for $30

Agree 100%...

not everybody wants to waste the space and power on another ugly computer, especially for something used occasionally. i like minimal.

I love my MacBook Air, and I don't feel like buying another computer. I am quite often on the road, and carry around two machines is not an option. Besides, it can be more than convenient to run another OS next to MacOS. So while I agree that support and upgrade policy for Parallels is not ideal, I will still rely on it to occasionally run software that is not available for Mac OS

----------

Or just use a real PC which doesn't need crutches to run Windows software.

Seriously. I don't understand why people buy Macs only to run the software that they need in a virtualized Windows environment. That neither makes technical nor economical sense. And the fact that VMWare and Parallels sold millions of copies of their desktop virtualization solutions only shows that OS X ALONE still is not a 100% viable platform for most users.

If you can't migrate 100% to a different platform - no matter if that platform is going to be OS X, Linux, FreeBSD or anything else - then don't even think about switching.

So you suggest that if I occasionally need to use software that is not available for my favorite OS I should abandon it? What should be the the alternative then if I may ask?

man fck this *****
i purchased PD8 a few months ago paying more than a hundred dollars in my local store and now the fcked up company is asking for another fifty bucks for a single useless upgrade?! _l_ off man

It sounds like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I recommend you don't upgrade.

I don't get it with all this stuff about rip-off upgrades.
It's not like a surprise. PD gets updated at this time every year, so what's the big deal?
It's £3 per month, less than the price of a beer, for a product that has been updated hugely over the last few versions. Would everyone like the upgrades to stop, and the product stagnate?
Do people whinge about OS X upgrades every year, or any other application?
That's the way it is, software gets upgraded, and if you don't want the upgrade, then don't buy it.

or just use Virtualbox, which is free.

Virtualbox has some horrible bugs in its virtual disk drivers, leading to kernel panics and corrupt filesystems. I bought Parallels because I got fed up with waiting on a fix which --a year later-- still hasn't come.

If it works it's nice, but if you hit bugs you're scr*wed.

They always had the iPad app to access parallels and the desktop. Access was free. So now they say it is a 'new' app and charge for the service?.

It is also hard to set up. I used it and hated it. I dont recommend anyone waste their time with Virtualbox.

I wonder if the people complaining about a new version of Parallels every year for $50 are the same ones who wait in stupid long lines to drop another 5 bills on the latest and greatest iphone every year?

I'm using VirtualBox on Ubuntu host and it worked perfectly. But on Mac, I tried VirtualBox before and it locked up the system. So had to shell some cash for Parallels.

I can't imagine why one would try gaming using a virtual machine vs a non-virtual machine. with boot camp, there's no reason to do so either.

I'm occasionally lazy, want a quick break from coding/writing, or for some other reason want to access the windows side of my machine without switching over entirely.

I've played World of Tanks, Skyrim, and some other games via a Parallels VM, and while it's not as good as the native experience, it's perfectly serviceable.

No.

I used my 3G until ~9 months ago, when the battery was dead, the chassis finally cracked, and iOS support was a distant memory of halcyon days long past.

I still get faintly irked at the timing and speed of Parallels updates, and how poor their customer service is.

This really looks good.

I just wish they had just done an "update" to version 8 to include USB booting :p

They get ya on the important stuff, don't they.
