What's the point of a notebook in high school? You aren't allowed to bring it to school, one the rare occasion that you would need to do some research you can use your home computer which I assume you have, and you rarely have to study on your computer in high school if at all.

Wait until next summer, buy a MB, get a free printer and iPod.

Ask them if they'd rather you spend it on drugs and hookers, or a computer you will need when you go to college anyway and they won't be on the hook for paying for *that* part of your education.

This iGuezz is the one time in which our Junior members can have some input, hopefully with maturity. But, I am in high school and bring my laptop to school probably three to five times a week for a variety of reasons. I would say that of my 250 classmates probably 30 of them have a laptop on a regular basis - sure, that is not a majority, but it's still significant enough for wireless throughout the school (which is common at most public and private schools where I live) It is to my knowledge a school by school basis, but some of the private schools in our area require students to purchase a notebook and the City of Beachwood Ohio gave loaned their middle school students iBooks (and still does to my knowledge) that they could take home and what not.

the fact that your parents will let you keep your money is great too (your 17 remember, lol)
and that savings will definitely come in handy next year when you actually may possible need a laptop

Have you ever thought that maybe your parents want to buy you a laptop as a graduation gift?

I had a friend who bought one even though his parents told him to wait and then hid it. But later found out his parents bought him one.

Either way, you've decided to wait. Good decision.

Nice choice mate. Well, in my opinion you should tell them to see the MBP too - it's a beauty. If you can wait until college, wait. If not go ahead and insist to your parents.

I agree

with the majority here.
Do you really NEED a MBP or do you WANT a MBP. A MB is just as good for most things and will save you a heap a cash.

What about transportation for next year? Food? Entertainment?

I think your parents are trying to help you look at the bigger picture.

Why not buy some stock and start saving money. The younger you do it the easier and bigger payout it will grow to when you really need it (old age).

Ohhh...and btw...how are you getting your college tuition, books, supplies? Parents or you? Believe me you won't believe how COSTLY college textbooks can be!

Get down on your knees and THANK you parents for CARING enough to put their foot down.

Wow that sucks that they still control you at 17. My parents stopped with that when I was 13/14. (Of course my sister on the other hand fell under "house rules" till she was 22 ( ! ) )

Waiting is a good though. It sucks to wait so long. When you do go off to college please make sure you get some type of renters insurance incase someone steals it or beer spills on it or the countless other things that happen in college.

1. It's your money
2. You're 17, a year from being an adult
3. You want a computer -- not crack cocaine or a handgun!

Buy the MBP. Enjoy it all through your senior year. God knows what you'll be doing in 4 years, 2 years, or even next year! This is your life, and although you should always respect your parent's advice, at 17 you need to be making your own choices on Mac purchases -- especially when it's your cash!

i know you have decided to wait (or so you say)

I am 18 with dads old iBook. My dad got a MBP 15' and its only advantage over the MB is 2'' whick gets annoying in the long run iThink. SOOOO i am getting a top of the line MB on the 14th because i waste my money when i get it... won 4.5grand at the casino. Im just like you, I want somthing then go for the coolest possible option, but when it comes to a heap load of money (the diff between a MB and MBP, and not the choice of 8gb over 16gb iPhone) then think about what you need and what you want. just keep it safe till you go where ever you go so you dont spend it on little thing you don't need - because they add up!

nutshell: save it, work out what you NEED, work out when you NEED IT for. in the mean time DON'T WASTE IT

Yeah,

Tell them Bollocks its your money! Do what you like! Rightly or wrongly its your money you do what YOU want with it. Go ahead and get it. They can hardly stop you buying it.

Yeah, follow this advice.
Then write if you find a place to live.

first off..you should never tell them how much money youve saved and/or how much money you intend on spending.

secondly, whenever going into a large purchase as a teenager and young adult, i always threw in the "i know someone, i got a hook up" line so the mentality was i spent less than they calculated, and it was unknown how long i would have this deal of a century.

no matter how much you want to bully up and acknowledge that its your money...your parents wont care. i mean, lets be real. if i told my parents i saved up a couple grand and was gonna spend it all on one little square looking "thing" they wouldnt be okay with it.

+1

Wait until you get to college only because you'll get a nice 10% educational discount, and probably a free ipod. Since you saved up the money, might as well get the most for it!

If you have decided to wait a year to the MBP (which think is the right decision) make sure you tell your parents it was because of their advice.... not this forum. It doesn't hurt to give them credit, and will get you some brownie points you can use later.....

Sounds like you have a good relationship with your folks (based on very scant evidence, I'll admit)... keep that relationship. It will prove to be a good thing in the future, even if that means not always getting your way now. Also remember that they are feeding and housing you, and perhaps acting as a taxi service on occasion, so they do have some claim on the money.

Gracefully concede on the battles you can't/don't want to win, and you'll have an easier time on the important ones.

Yeah, keep your parents happy. Life is expensive. :) You'll need all the help you can get, until you make the big bucks.
