All in all, it comes down to those two questions. If you don't want to fork the cash for the Apple name, then go with the PC, you won't be disappointed (so long as you shop carefully). If you don't mind forking the cash for the Mac, and like the platform itself (as many have suggested, please TRY it first!), then get the Mac, you won't be disappointed.

Hehe. The infamous "shop carefully" (otherwise known "devil in details") came up again in Apple vs. PC comparisons.

To me personally that is major selling point. I'm techie. I'm hard core techie. That's why at home I want to have something that "Just Works".

Linux is not something what "Just Works" (and least so Windows) on any moderately high-end hardware. Mac OS X has its quirks, yet I hardly ever see the rough edges.

I'm buying Macs solely because I can abstract myself from all the technical details and just enjoy using computer for casual things.

1) Quieter

2) Lighter

3) OS X

4) Build quality

5) Reliability

You will not be disappointed. OS X is different to Windows, but much, much better :apple:

I'm sorry to admit, but i haven't read the whole thread.
Judging from the bits i have read though, i'd like to offer an opinion from a different angle....

Rather than looking for a reason to get the MBP, you should be looking at reasons not to buy the Asus.

I've had an Asus A6J for about 18 months and for the last 17 months i've been dying to get a MBP (should be getting a 17" sometime next month).
In the first 3 months of owning my Asus, it spent more time in the repair shop than it did with me. The issues i've had with it were never resolved satisfactorily and the customer support is about as helpful as a parking attendant who's having a bad day.

Personally, I would recommend anything other than an Asus. A mbp suits my needs perfectly which is why I'm going for one of them next. If it's a features per $ ratio you're looking for, sure, there might be better alternatives, but if you're looking for features per $ + peace of mind - the mbp is the way to go.

Stu.

get the mac

When I was younger and lived with my dad I did not have a computer till i was about 16.. I always just used the one at school and my dad who is 57 never really used one.. We bought a pc and it was horrible. My dad wanted to throw it off the balcony and never use a computer again. I was always working on that damn thing.

Well I turned 18 and went out and bought him an iMac. See when we first got the computer I was trying to talk him into an apple but he didn't want to spend the extra money. Guess what he now admits the extra money would have been WORTH it as the computer is about to turn 6 years old and still runs exactly the same as the day we bought it. Now granted it is way under in the ram department as of now and some web pages a laggy but all he does is email, surf the web and skype/ichat with me. He actuallllllyyyyyy enjoys using his computer and as everyone says it just WORKS.....Granted I had to show him/show him ways to use programs such as skype but that would happen if it was a pc or a mac. Now my dad will talk his friends into trying out his 6 year old mac before he lets one of them go buy a pc and <even though it is only running Panther as I removed Tiger when I left home> his friends fall in love with it. My step mom has since went out and purchased an iMac along with a ibook. My dad has converted a lot of his friends and co workers to the other side "the mac side" and they all love it.. They ask themselves why they went through the headaches of windows.

Yes.. I'M a FanBoy but my dad wasn't and now he even thinks people using windows must be lovers of headaches.. GET THE MAC.. THE MacBook Pro will play games and you too will wonder why it took so long to switch.
