I haven't seen any boosts in boot speeds. So, another question - if I were to get a new nvme drive which one would be best and the most affordable? I love samsung but they run pretty high. What other brands would you guys recommend for getting the most speed out of the Syba I/O Crest card?
Thanks for the responses . I knew about the longer boot times but will my apps load fasters? Samples load quicker? Protools Ableton cubase?
Yes, yes, and yes. The only downside, if you can call it that, is a slightly longer boot time. After that, nothing but speed.
That said, will you notice apps loading faster in an NVMe v. SATA. Not really. But NVMe makes a difference in how smoothly 4K timelines edit work in FCPX.

Seagate Firecuda 510 or 520 seems to be very good and is backward compatible with 3rd gen.
Once I install the PCIe card with the blade do I just clone my start up drive to it or do I have to do the usb/terminal install ?
I've done both. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a working drive/apps to a new one. And, I have also used MacOS Install to bring on a new disk (SATA or NVMe), then install the apps separately (clean install).
I added a section for converting a 4Kn capable NVMe blade to the 4Kn disk sector format in the main post.
I tested two NVMe blades for 4Kn support today. A Toshiba/KIOXIA XG5-P 2TB formatted 4Kn without issue (I temporarily installed it in an Intel NUC). I bought that one to install in my 6,1, but Amazon hasn't shipped the adapter and heatsink so I can't install it yet. I checked an SK hynix PC401 256GB that's in a friend's Lenovo laptop and the firmware reports 4Kn support (I didn't format it since it's in use). Those are both OEM client SSDs. SK hynix has consumer NVMe blades coming out this year featuring 128 layer NAND flash.

I bought a Wolftech Pulsecard PCIe adapter. It is very stiff when I mount it in the PCI slot in the Mac Pro. Is it possible to detach the metal bracket on the back so that the card will slide more easily in the PCI slot? Will it negatively impact thermal performance of the SSD? At the moment (with the metal bracket still attached) temperature is around 47-51°C. And it is not even summer yet...
I have the Toshiba/KIOXIA XG5-P 2TB installed in a 6,1 and the compatibility seems good. I’ve tried it with both Mojave and Catalina. At first Catalina wouldn’t boot. The Mac would shut down. But that appears to be an issue with Carbon Copy Cloner I used to clone the drive. I reinstalled Catalina over it and it boots fine. Speeds are about the same as the original SSUBX. ~1250 mbps write, ~1450 mbps read.

Basically, kryoM.2 works with single and double sided PCIe M.2 blades, while kryoM.2 EVO only accepts single sided ones.Wh

kryoM.2 EVO model has better thermals, but the limitation of using only single sided M.2 blades may be a problem for you, you have to check if the M.2 blades that you want to install, now and in the future, are single sided.

Thanks for the advice but I ended up going with that exact card and it works fine.
The finish on it is fine. I don't see an issue.

I have the Glotrends NVME-PEX4 card here, when you put it side by side with an Angelbird Wings PX1, a Aqua Computer kryoM.2 or a HighPoint SSD7101A-1, the finish is mediocre at best and the PCB routing is really atrocious without any trace length compensation at all.
Nice that works for you and you are happy with it, but with some bucks more you can get a kryoM.2.

I'm sure I could have spent a little more and got the KyroM.2 but I don't see the point spending any more than I have to. At the end of the day it's a PCIe card and it does the job.

I have a sabrent drive in a Kryo.m2 card, formatted exfat/guid partition. It shows up just fine in macOS but isn’t visible at all in Windows 10. Any idea why?

I ran black Magic speed test on my Accelsior PCIe 250gig, BootROM MP51.0089.B00, on High Sierra, and the write speed was surprisingly 300megs only, and (read 650megs sounds right). Can someone confirm that it's correct ?, and I suspect from being older M.2, because the Mac does not ses it as an NVMe drive at all.
I just installed the EVO 970 Plus and right away it sees it as an NVMe drive.
May I ask which one of these drives I should use for the O.S. ?, or for audio ?
Is it still the case to update the firmware for the EVO 970 Plus ?
