But the Basis Peak is also from 'An Intel Company'. I don't think their track record is that good at staying in a market for the long haul. It sounds like an interesting device, and I hope it works, but I wonder how long it will be sold/supported/updated. But then I still wear a Fuel Band in hopes that Nike will continue to support it. *shrug*

Yup, but Apple was a computer company until the iPods...

The Basis 1 or whatever it is called has pretty good reviews, so I'm expecting similar with the Basis. Plus it is only $199? So it isn't like its a huge investment. Sports watches can cost up to $700/$800 dollars or maybe even more.

The watch is on the wrist. You can tilt it easily. Not a big problem.

Tilting only helps with glare, which an anti-reflective coating would do anyway. It doesn't magically increase the brightness of the display.

I don't think the brightness will be a problem. Do you have any information that it will be?

"direct sunlight". Like I said, you can just tilt your arm a little.

Agreed and not going to be a problem for me. Just pointing out that OLED is a compromise. I much prefer the good looking colors display with true blacks over a paper white LCD that is more viewable in the sun.

It does sound very interesting. With luck, it will do very well, and will be taken over by a company that will be in it for the long haul, or Intel will see the value in it.

I for one am not waiting for the :apple:Watch. I think Apple waited far too long to jump into a market with far too many players. The carnage is going to be epic, and I think that Apple likely won't end up on top.

On a related tangent, Apple should really look at their marketing for the iPads and iPods. They are supporting far too many models and the market has gotten confused and somewhat distracted by the plethora of different models and capabilities. They need to have at most 2 models, and at most three of each. Selling the 2, and the 3, and the 4, and the Air, and the Air2, and the mini, and the mini2 and the mini3... It's far too much, and with the capability shortcomings of the earlier models, it's beyond time to flush them out of the channel and establish the latest model as THE standard.

Market confusion will kill a product, and a company. Heck, the local Target store STILL has 7 of the original iPads in their display case. I don't know why... They are priced at the then going retail price too.

I agree, I saw an overview of the LG watch which seems so suit some of the style people have posted here, although definitely not for me. I think they waited too long, they may have poorer battery level, it seems like they do have to play catch up although fitbit made a misstep for whatever reason but they have a huge following and now with their watch announced, I can see many people going that route.

I would still stick with the Basis Peak over the Pebble or the LG. One caveat to waiting on the 2 gen aWatch is it will probably not happen until fall 2016 with the 1st gen pushed back until spring next year.

I own a Pebble Steel. It's a fine device, but it is quite limited by its lack of a microphone and Siri. Some things I'm looking forward to with the Apple Watch that I cannot currently do:

1. Respond to a text through the watch itself.

2. Have legible maps on my wrist, especially when I'm walking somewhere.

3. Use Siri to look things up.

4. Use it as a speakerphone.

Essentially, the Pebble is a second screen for my phone and can only display information in limited form (consumption only). The Apple Watch is going to be a wrist-worn version of Siri that allows information to come in as well as go out. That's the biggest difference I can see.

That seems odd visually.

To each their own, but I've found Siri to be such a lackluster feature thus far. I can probably count on one hand how many times it's been more useful than just inputting the query manually.

The interest in the Apple watch remains strictly a fitness/health thing for me. There isn't anything yet that will sway me from a traditional watch for everyday wearing.

I should clarify that this desire has come after wearing the Pebble for a while. I actually don't use Siri much at all on my phone, but when I get a text on my Pebble my reaction is to try and reply without pulling my phone out. Since I can't picture myself typing on a watch screen I assume voice dictation would handle it.

I'm with the comedian that did a rant about Siri. He was going on about how much Siri was so much like his ex-wife. She never listened to him, always got whatever he told her wrong, and in the end was such a pain in the butt, he wishes he could have turned her off: his ex-wife. 'We could have had a beautiful life together, if I could have only turned her off'...

Priceless...

Siri voice dictation works very well. I use it in my car through BT all the time (also for reading text). This will be a welcome feature. I can see myself out on a run and being able to listen and then respond to a text while my iPhone is in my pack.

As counter intuitive as it might sound, since Apple was so late jumping into the 'smart watch' game, they then should have waited it out and came in after the carnage.

You know some big players are going to be left bleeding on the side of the road of time, their products filling landfills and possibly holes dug in the desert somewhere...

So far, from the in-house users here, the best is the Nike+, but only because of its low price. Picked up a new SE for $75. The Fitbit was a fail, and the UP 24 bombed too. The Garmin CX something or other was a total disaster, and a costly one too at nearly $400! Now there is a vivofit that now works a lot better with the 6+, and me with my Fuel Band. There is a Garmin Edge 510, and potentially, for the future potentially a vivosmart, if Worst Try decides to finally carry the colors like the Garmin website says.

I looked at the fenix 2 and had flashbacks to the expensive Garmin CX whatever, and decided that wasn't for me. Yet... Although it does do VO2, so never say never...

My $300 Tag Heuer fell apart, so there might be room for another watch soon. A watch watch. Call me old fashioned...

On the late entry of Apple to the watch craze, I remember watching a talk by the heads of Cisco and they said that they don't enter a market unless they are either the first, or the best. They would rather, if possible, show up late in a market and slam the competition with a phenomenally well thought out and executed product that will rock them on their heels.

It made me wonder what happened to that portable video camera company they bought, and failed at. I guess some things just don't work as planned... I thought, for the record, that the camera was a good idea... Although I never bought one.

But still, Apple, maybe you should wait it out?

'Your mileage may vary.'

I have an FJ, and the distance between my mouth and the built-in mic is nearly two feet. I get constant complaints over the amount of noise that the mic picks up. People say that I sound literally like I'm stuck in a tin can, and *any* road noise is picked up pretty loudly. The mic is in the rear view mirror. I wish they had an AUX input for a microphone so I could move it closer to me, and possibly employ some noise reduction technology to improve the thing...

One person thought I was in a barn. I'm still baffled at that one...

Dictating a text message.:eek::D

The iPhone's speaker phone is not Siri. Also the problem is more likely with your car's system than the iPhone's speaker phone abilities. I never have any complaints using the iPhones's speaker phone (not in car) or the BT speaker phone in my car. My car is also on the noisy side and I often have trouble hearing (my systems weakness) but they always hear me fine. So with a BT speaker phone connection your 'milage' will depend on the car's system and not the iPhone or Siri.

No, I understood what you were getting at and I'm glad that your Bluetooth speaker phone system works great. I'm just saying that I wish mine did that too.

I did see a truck driver wearing headphones cruising down the road. If it wasn't illegal to do that in this state, I'd consider it for those times when the crappy roads and other stuff make it harder for people to hear me over the phone. But since I'm retired, I guess I don't have any pressing needs for staying in touch either. That aside, I love my FJ. Even if the Bluetooth microphone sucks... It does have a backup camera...

Didn't say mine worked great. I said people understand me and don't even know I'm on a speaker phone but I sometimes have have a hard time hearing them even when turning to full volume. Car speaker phone's weakness or strengths aren't usually related to any quality issues of the connected phone.

That's where I'm lost. I never criticized the iPhone. It's the FJ and the mic placement. But whatever...

Well Fitbit has a large following, I wouldn't say they are dead, I imagine they will continue to do very well but I think that not adopting Apple HealthKit will hurt them.

And many/most? people don't wear regular watches, I certainly don't. I like data though so a watch/wearable that provides data, that is interesting.

As for Cisco, those execs must've forgot about PIX ;) although they seemed to do well with what other companies do, buy one of the leaders to get in the game such as Linksys. I wonder if Apple thought about buying Fitbit but the current products are probably a bit too different and maybe a bit too diverse.

The pebble being waterproof is actually quite a big deal. I have to periodically give my Pebble watch a good scrub with a toothbrush because my wrist sometimes develops skin allergies after wearing it for some thing. It's nice being to dunk it under running water and not have to worry about it spoiling.

That said, I expect that many people wearing the Apple Watch will be doing it for as much the status symbol as much as functionality. As such, while the OP does bring up some valid points, I don't think these points will matter as much to these consumers.

We had one of their scales (Fitbit) and it was the most inaccurate and useless pieces of technology we've ever had short of the Windows Phone...

Tangent: I just topped a whole year of breaking the Fuel band goals, just to see what Nike did for such people, and, well, they do nothing... No badge, no trophy, nothing. I guess I 'won', but for a band that says they want to encourage people to be more active, I'd have expected something more.

But whatever... Really looking hard at the Garmin vivosmart. At least it will help me find my iPhone the next time I lose it...:D:):p:eek::mad::eek::cool::apple:

The selling points for the Pebble still are battery longevity, price and the fact that many people just want simple notifications. They don't want a computer on their wrist. I know, currently, I don't.

FYI, I just picked up the VivoSmart, after returning my Basis Peak. The Basis Peak was just too large for me. I like that you can control your music with the Vivosmart. I highly recommend looking into it.
