Pelotons business model is sustainable and they grew during the pandemic for obvious reasons, but I question why pursue Apple to take stake at ~20% other than what’s speculated. It leads me to believe there is more going on here, other than just more potential ‘growth’ factors with sales declining. I’m not buying Pelotons reasoning. I suspect there is more to it.
They want all the benefits of the investor confidence aura that comes along with a big investor cash injection without having to give up any ownership or control. They are morons and will obviously not be successful. They will likely end up being acquired at high discount by a private equity firm.

Apple would be fools to buy Peloton. But then again, Tim Cook and Eddy Cue got suckered into buying Beats so I guess anything’s possible.

Good luck with that
Exacto!

Apple should NOT touch this company. It’s one of those pandemic companies that is falling off since most people are getting back j to gyms getting outside more now that everything is opening up.

They’ve not adapted to these changes and other than dire hard cyclists whom not used other services and rained inside it’s too overpriced for hardware and service.

I always thought Peloton was charging way too much for their product. It's too niche.

Why can't classes etc be an app? People then can use their own equipment. Unless they already do this.

They need to appear on Shark Tank, likely they will be offer a pittance for 20% of the company.

What they expect for a 20% sale is likely what they would be offered for 80% of the company.

The exercise equipment market has always been dominated by fads. They come on like a rocket and then run out of gas. It is a tale as old as time.

Sigh.

I bought a bike 4 months ago. In my adulthood, it is, without a doubt, the single most important thing exercise wise I've ever done for myself. Nothing appealed to me. But after months of research, reading reviews, watching videos, etc I jumped in, ordered a bike right after Christmas, received it...and I've done 150 classes since. I've also lost almost 20 lbs, feel better, well, you get the idea.

And now, it's highly possible the company is not long for this Earth. Their content blows away Apple fitness, their bike is high quality (can't speak of their treadmill, since I don't have one), and their interactive features are well designed and engineered. They literally have the entire package, right now, today.

But their stupid ass founder literally set piles of money on fire and now, they have nothing to show for it other than a gloomy future.
Exactly my same story. I can’t workout at the gym since I only get time early in the morning.

I even have the Guide…

I don’t own any Peloton equipment but I subscribe to Peloton Digital for $13/mo. I have access to all workouts and follow along on my iPad or Apple TV using my own treadmill/bike. The quality and variety of workouts is second to none and certainly blows Apple Fitness away IMO, including workouts that don’t use a bike or treadmill. Peloton has become my go-to source for nearly every time I workout. I hope they survive.

I have a Peloton bike, and enjoy using it and the classes... so it's a bit worrying.

I got a substantial discount on the purchase, which is fortunate because I think the purchase price is too high and I wouldn't have purchased without that discount; furthermore the ongoing monthly subscription is also too high, but I'm fortunate enough to be able to justify it. Many other potential customers are no doubt turned off by the high price.

I'd be fine if Apple acquired part/all of it but question whether this will ever happen, particularly given that the bike screen is essentially a massive Android tablet. I don't see that point going over well at Apple...
I was interested in the bike and the classes but when I found out the costs and recurring costs I decided to just stick with my yoga mat and You Tube workouts. I felt there would be less of a feeling of guilt over a waste of money when the inevitable disruption to my schedule would cause me to ignore the Peleton for days or weeks at a time. I was thinking then of the normal things I was planning to volunteer for taking me out of my usual routine.

As it turned out, my dad unexpectedly died and my father-in-law slid further into dementia and the last few MONTHS have been a mess. I’m out almost every day dealing with those issues and can’t even do my budget excerise routine as regularly as it should be done.

Now with food and gas and rents rising, yeah I can see how Peleton is having problems growing their customers. That’s a shame for people like you who have been able to make good use of it and have found it worthwhile. I hope the service you’re currently enjoying can somehow continue whatever happens with the ownership.

I don’t need a very expensive Peloton bike I just bought a very good but cheap (~$150) bike that has a holder for iPad and use Fitness+. Great setup and don’t have to throw money away.

I know many around here are adamantly against the idea, but I own a Peloton and I love it. I don't pay too much attention to the companies financial issues, but I like my bike, I like the classes/content, and I like staying in shape.

I guess it would be nice if Peloton was based on iOS and had better Apple integration, but it's also not necessary.

For the life of me though, I can't figure out why so many people around here are so passionate about their hate for Peloton.
Buying Peloton, sure. That idea needs discussing. Paying 20% of the company (and have little say) just to support a direct competitor to Fitness+? like someone said above, Apple is not stupid.

Peloton needs to sell outright. Amazon, Google or even Samsung might be interested but they just want some stupid company to push their stock price up so the owners can get out of jail. No way.

The difference is Fitness+ shows your metrics on the screen (if you have Apple Watch) and that makes all the difference in the world.

Peloton recently integrated Apple Watch if you desire on-screen metrics. It works quite well if I may add.

Bottom line is that it all comes down to preference. Personally, I found the Fitness+ class selection very limited compared to what Peloton offers, not to mention I prefer Peloton’s instructors. But if Fitness+ works for you, that’s all that matters.

Back to the topic of this thread, as I previously said, I hope Peloton survives. Competition is good and should lead to a better product for everyone.

I can’t explain that purchase but it looks like it worked out at least.
Worked out how, exactly? AirPods dominate and Beats is a has been brand. Google spent $15 million to buy Songza to do what Apple spent $3.2 billion to create Apple Music which is in danger of falling to 3rd place behind… YouTube Music.

I could see Apple buying Peloton (or a company like them). They have been pushing hard into the fitness arena and there is only so much you can do with a video in front of your TV. Fitness hardware would make sense as a new market for Apple to break into. They’ve got the subscription service already, they’ve got their massive new studio so all that is missing is the hardware. They could roll the peloton subscriptions over into Apple Fitness, and sell the current gen hardware for a year or two while they redesign/Apple it up. And the fact that peloton own Precor means Apple gets access to whole lot more than a fancy bike with a tv attached.

What I really don’t like is that Peloton bought Precor - a company I love - and this might spell the end for the long, quality history of Precor, and support of their products which, to date, has been beyond outstanding.

Have had a bike since late 2015 so my house was an early adopter. Paid the upgrade fee to go to the Gen 2 screen, and the bike is still solid.

We even bought the Tread+, and despite the recall was considering keeping it (we had until October to decide) but given Peloton’s performance decided to return it now.

Peloton got too caught up with themselves and wasted too much money. Hopefully they can turn things around.

Don’t know if you’ve tried their bike or not but there is a noticeable difference in quality vs a $300 stationary bike. I believe their profit margin on the bike is very small - they make money on the subscription, which can be used on any Peloton device or away from it on your mobile device.
