Earlier this week, Peloton said that it would drop support for Apple's GymKit feature that syncs data to the Health app. Customers were unhappy with the decision and complained to the company, leading Peloton to announce a change in plans.

Peloton on Thursday said that after listening to member feedback on GymKit, the integration will continue to be offered.

Peloton wanted to stop offering GymKit integration in favor of the Peloton One-Tap tracking feature, but GymKit has been a key feature on the $2,500 Bike+ since its 2020 debut, and other Peloton machines since 2022.

The One-Tap tracking app does monitor distance, pace, and heart rate metrics, but only basic information is synced to the Apple Health app. With GymKit, data like cadence, average speed, and average power is also available in the Health app for Peloton users.

Perhaps Peloton realized that if they stop supporting GymKit a lot of people would stop subscribing to their $24/mo Peloton App+ service which they cannot afford to lose [their Average Monthly Paid App Subscription Churn last quarter (2nd quarter of fiscal year 2024) was at 7.2% while total members fell 4% vs a year ago]

No disrespect to Peloton users, but are they still going strong like 3 or 4 years ago?
Peloton user since Jan 2020 here - still love it as much as ever - I use my bike at home for cycling workouts + use the swivel screen for strength and yoga classes. And to the other person’s comment about selling user data, they get the same data either way you connect your watch (via GymKit or via their Bluetooth heart rate streaming method).

"GymKit has been a key feature on ... other Peloton machines since 2022."

This is incorrect. Peloton has never activated GymKit on any device other than the Bike+, although the NFC sensor is built into the consoles of its Tread+ and (maybe) the Row.

Wow, a company that listens to their customers?!?! Are you seeing this GM? Good job Peloton.
GM will listen to their customers when GM is losing money like Peloton.

Compare how GM is doing vs Peloton. In their most recent earnings reports, GM had net income of $2.1 billion and automotive free cash flow of $1.341 billion (free cash flow was $11.7 billion for all of calendar year 2023).

Over at Peloton, they reported a net loss of $194.9 million and negative free cash flow of $37.2 million (cash flow was negative $249.7 million for all of calendar year 2023).

It's an industry leading product from a poorly run company. Software and UI is excellent. Hardware is adequate for home use. They need to slash overhead to survive. Cutting promised services is not the way.
A perfect one paragraph summary

The Bike+ has been one of my best purchases, just wish Peloton would sort themselves out from a company perspective.

And current GM cars still have CarPlay. They won't really see the hit until they actually break the cars.

Peloton is among top 5 most riskiest Covid growth companies probable to go bankrupt in next year or so. Their Subscription business is keeping them afloat, the HW equipment growth has fizzled out. It would have been disaster to cut themselves from GymKit.

Pelowhoo? Bike lol. Maybe for spinners IMO.
