LOL...wasn't Peloton's CEO talking about "welcoming the competition from Apple" in 2020??

I had to google what Peloton was, and of all the nonsensical overprices scams Americans fall for, this has to be at least in the top five.
LOL! Yep, Peloton is the king of late night infomercials on TV. I've never seen the appeal myself, and I suspect most Peloton equipment probably gets used for a week or two then collects dust in the corner of a room. I wish I had a dollar for every time over the past 40 years I’ve gone to a friend or relative's home and seen a workout device sitting in the corner with all kinds of junk piled on top of it.

You can buy a real bike at Walmart for $125 and it really integrates well with an Apple Watch.

I am super tired of every company wanting to do everything. God forbid someone want to use, and pay, for both Apple and Peloton products together. Cross-compatibility should be the standard and not this fragmented technical dystopia.

I'm guessing you're making this statement in the context of Peleton - but Apple is doing the exact same thing with Apple Fitness +. I would guess that Peleton's moves are directly related to Apple coming out with Fitness+ and basically co-opting their entire model.

Thank god I didn't upgrade to a Bike+ , I almost did just for GymKit support.
Yeah, I'd be pretty peeved off if they'd killed GymKit after upgrading for it.
I love my original Peloton Bike, but I'm glad now I didn't upgrade for the new version.
At least one can still pair the watch using the iPhone Peloton app (for things like running on a non-Tread treadmill).

They simply don’t want to become Apple slaves and put their business in the hands of others, good that way.
Most slaves aren’t making multiple thousand dollar sales just by adding “GymKit” to their features list, though. Apple users tend to be well heeled AND willing to buy expensive things that simply fit in with their tech devices.

Software companies getting into hardware is shaky but they can get it done because the whole world is about software and iterating quickly now. Hardware companies getting into software are always going to have a rougher time of it. Also, it opens up a window for a software company to work with a low end hardware company to create competition for Peloton. Companies that were like “Why even try? Peloton has the name recognition, we can’t go up against that.” could now see an opening for themselves. Could be interesting.

I get the appeal of at home workouts when 1/2 the county is covered in snow 7 months out of the year and gyms are limiting occupancy. But in no way is Peloton the only solution. Get a real bike, put it on a trainer in winter, and a zwift account and you’re already WAY ahead

I can't fathom spending twice as much money as a very nice actual bicycle costs for this. What's the angle?

I'd rather be out in the fresh air seeing the outdoors any day.

To each their own, but I have 2 kids, a third on the way, and the closet trail to make it safe to bike is about a 20 minute drive. In the time it would take to drive there and back, I can hop on my peloton and knock a great workout. Not to mention in live in PA, so there are handful of months out of the year that makes working outside less than desirable!

To be fair, they didn't "just" add gymkit to the bike+ and jack the price. Other features were added as well.

The company would likely want to encourage users who have already invested in costly equipment and an ongoing $39 per month subscription to remain within the Peloton ecosystem with its own smartwatch.
I love how the solution is to pay them even more money

So they use Apple to get customers and then give a big middle finger to them now that Apple is more of a competitor to them.

I've read some conflicting information on exact numbers, but in the last quarter, peloton users took somewhere in the ranged of 100 million workouts in that 3 month period. The cycle classes I take that have been recorded typically have between 40-60k people on the leaderboard.

Certainly may be true for a lot of people, as is the case with any exercise equipment and/or gym membership, it takes someone committed to using it. My wife and I bought a Peloton last year and at least for me personally, it has been a life changer. I spin 6 days a week, and have lost more than 20 pounds since mid-September of last year when we got the bike.

I used to be a regular road and mountain biker back in my 20’s, but my stupidity then in thinking I was invincible caused major damage to both knees, requiring 4 surgeries (to date), so running was out of the question to stay healthy and active as I get older. I was a bit worried that spinning would be too stressful on the knees, but I built my strength back up gradually and haven’t had any issues in the 6 months I’ve been using it. I got the original model, even though I was tempted to upgrade to the Bike+, but didn’t want to commit then not knowing how much I would like it.

My workaround for using my Watch series 5 was the BlueHeart app, which was super unreliable initially, but has been great in connecting my workout metrics with the Health app on the Watch and iPhone.
