Gave Up Went With Refub. 2.66 Mac Pro

It seems everyone has been waiting for a refresh for awhile. I couldn't stand it anymore and gave up on the wait. I'm sure the next one will be a nice one, so hang in there.

Ok... my head officially exploded this morning. No iMac update, plus the refurb Mac Pro that I was going to get for $1899 is gone from the refurb page.... arrrrgggggh!

I have been without a computer for more than a week now as I sold my iMac on speculation of an update. I am such an idiot.

I can't seem to pull the trigger on an updated purchase because I don't want to get caught between an over buy of a Mac Pro and regretting missing out on a good deal for features on a new Mac.

Because most of my head is missing (from the explosion noted above), someone please advise and my remaining brain cells may follow sage
direction.

The only advice anyone gives on this site. If you really need it, which it sounds like you do, buy it now. If you don't need it then wait.

following on from what everyone else has asked I too have been, waiting for the iMac penryn update but now I can't really wait any longer and need a new computer after my previous iMac purchase went back to apple for a refund.

I have posted on the iMac board but i thought it might be useful to post within this thread too, basically i was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is it worth buying the Limited Time special 24" 2.4 iMac from the Refurb store over the same machine in the Education Store; the difference in price is ~50GBP more for the new machine.

What benefits do i get with the new model?

Am I right in saying that there a 3years limited warranty with it via the HE store, but not with the refurb (if i bought via the HE store too)

Thanks!

how much of a change are the new mini's gonna be compared to the refurbed ones now?
i am looking at this one:
Refurbished Mac mini 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive
SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 memory

but i am hesistant to pull the trigger if the updated minis are gonna be a lot better

You learned a hard lesson...never sell your :apple: iMac until after you buy a new one!!! Would you sell a car way before you buy a new one, if you need one to get to work!!!

Yes, if I had three cars. I have three Macs for different purposes and wanted to maximize the return on the sold iMac before new machines came out. I understand what you are saying but it was a risk thing at which I have lost.

Guess I'll be using the G5 tower at work to get my video done. I'm still gun shy about over buying on a Mac Pro.

Come on overbuy....I did and am super happy i did.
What did you get in your "overbuy"? Sounds like mcavjame is just trying to be responsible and we have people chastising him on one side for being cautious and the other side trying to throw caution to the wind.

Be patient mcavjame. Sounds like you can get by with what you have until the new machines come out. The refurbish page gets updated often and a machine you are looking for will come back. I think you'll know when the right deal has come along.

What did you get in your "overbuy"?

Dual (2) 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (we are talking 8, 2.8Ghz cores here)
2GB (2x1GB) (plus 8GB from Transinternational)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRELESS KEYBD/ OS X

Waaaayy more power than I need, it cost 2900 + 400 for the extra ram. But it arives tomorrow. I was going to go for the 2.8 imac but for a bit more I get a computer that will last twice as long (for me) and it is at least 4 time more powerful. The graphics card can run warcraft at 114fps. I already have a 24inch monitor. So by going the mac pro route I also get the added privilege of being able to drop another $1500 in the future to get the 30inch screen. Lucky me. Its good to be rich :)

Yes, we need slimmer iMacs. 512MB graphics card that is used for the MacBook Pros should make it in. I doubt we'll get a new case this time, probably the next update. Hopefully a 30" will come with it.

I'm not trying to be a **** but a 30" iMac is too big for your eyes to see. 24" is huge!

Well, just trying to make a point :D

Dual Display on Mac Mini?

Is this too much to hope for? The Mac Mini is rumoured to be getting the same graphics chip as the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air can drive a second display.

What's the chance that the updated Mac Mini will be able to drive two displays?

They'd have to put two video connectors on the back, and space is a little bit of a premium.

That said, the reason I'm running a 24" LCD now is because my Mini couldn't handle the 2x 20" LCDs I used to use on my PC. If they release a Mini with enough oomph to drive 2 24" displays, I'll be getting one.

I was on the Futureshop site this morning and noticed that their iMac sale has been extended to April 3rd. Well this will get me off the fence I think. Too bad deliveries will be delayed by a long weekend *sigh*

Thanks everyone! My firewall is active. Wow, what a difference. I've been using PC's and been an IT Professional for 15 years, and I never thought I'd be using a MAC. I'm hooked!!!!

yes, I am hooked to. I just got mine in the mail yesterday and I love it already, there are a few things that i wish it assesed such as windows, but it is easy to get past.

as a quick question to all: I just got my 24" iMac as I stated above, and there are a few dead pixels on the screen. I can't tell if it is 2 or 3, but it is noticable. I am just wondering what would most likely happen if I went to the genius bar and showed them the scenario. replace immedietly? and transfer all the data onto a new system? fix/replace the screen? Because I cannot go very long without it regarding school.

Thanks, Palmer

The MB and MBA both use Santa Rosa with the X3100 gpu. It can drive two displays (and so can the current Mini gpu), but there's only one connector on a Mini. For the Mini to drive two displays Apple would have to add a second DVI or (hopefully) HDMI port. I doubt that'll happen, but who knows? If they migrate the Mini's ff to that of the ATV and TC it'll free up a lot of room on the back of the unit.

You have a CTO ordered machine, which the Apple Store cannot exchange. They will replace it, but you will have to send it back first. That day, you can call Apple with the tracking number and they will start shipping the new one once it is assembled. I have done this twice with the Macbook Air.

The official policy of Apple is that there needs to be at least 5 dead pixels, however they will exchange it at least once. After the first time, if it happens again and has less than five, they may not do it again (although if you sound pissed off enough, they will).

For the price you paid for the machine, there should be no dead pixels.

I also will be drinking the Mac-Kool-Aid. I have been in the PC for years, I am tired of all this windows "Crap". I am kind of waiting on the new iMac. and also wondering on getting a Mac-Pro. I would like to get into some basic video editing(final-cut express). anybody have comments? the price point of a Mac-Pro compared to the Imac is some descent $$$
