Sorry, just to clarify:

My wife has the 2g, I have the 3g. Plan to pass the 3g down and upgrade to 3gs; used her line (family plan account) to receive upgrade pricing.

SO, I'm hearing the best process is to:

1. Activate the 3GS using the NEW SIM and on her line (as it was 'intended').
2. Swap SIM with my 3G.
3. Restore and revert to backups on both phones with appropriate data/apps.

CORRECT?

OR,

Since my wife's 2g is already on the Family Data plan (and has a 3g card inside - I checked) - should I discard the new SIM, put my SIM in the 3GS and her SIM in my 3g?

HELP VERY MUCH APPRECIATED - AWAITING FEDEX ARRIVAL ANY MOMENT.
Each case is often unique. In your situation, you should use the "OR" section. This will allow your wife to use her original iPhone or her new "second hand" iPhone 3G that you are giving her. The original iPhone is paired with the SIM during iTunes activation. So by reusing that SIM, she can use the original iPhone as a backup.

Unless you decide to sell it. :D

Oops, almost forgot, just keep the new un-activated SIM as a spare or you can put it in the original iPhone if you decide to sell.

1. Turned off my iPhone 3G.

2. Connected 3G S to iTunes.

3. Said thanks for purchasing from Apple Store, enter zip code, last four of SS#.

4. Now activating your line on phone # XXX-XXX-XXXX

5. iPhone is now activated.

6. Sync :)

Thats how it went for me!

I went to the AT&T store around 8AM, the rep was very nice. I told him I was using my dad's line to upgrade to a new iPhone, but I would be using the phone for my line. So he activated the iPhone first on my dad's line, then transferred the phone to my line.

He didn't need my phone or my dad's phone. I didn't do any switching out or anything. He did everything.

I hope when I get my bill, everything looks good.

Ditto but I had the rep check my hubby's line to make sure there was no 30.00 data plan on his razor too lol.

So you don't really have to do it @ a corp store? you can just call in after the activation...?

i called in before i plugged anything into itunes. she just asked for the iphone imem number and she put that on my number and kept my wife's blackberry on her number. of course, i plug into itunes and there's activation issues, so we'll see how it works.

I had the smoothest upgrade imaginable at the Apple Store in Montgomery Mall, Bethesda, MD.

The day the phone was announced, I "reserved" a new 3G-S 32gig phone by specifying I wanted to add a new line, via the Apple Store website. My real plan was to add a line for my 14-YO son, give him my current 16gig 3G, and take the new phone for myself (since at the time I "reserved" my phone, AT&T wanted $500 for a straight upgrade). I also planned to get an 8gig 3G for my wife and add her (my 16-YO and I got our iPhones last August, but my wife and 2nd son were still on Verizon).

I'd gotten an email confirmation of my reservation immediately, and a reminder email yesterday, telling me I could go to the store anytime today. I went around noon; they had a concierge outside the store separating people into various lines. Since I had a reservation, she checked me on her list and directed me to a line with only one person ahead of me. Less than three minutes later I was escorted inside the store by a rep to begin the process. I was taken to a station where the phones were on a cart, and the guy there checked his list and then gave my rep my phone. When I explained the swap I wanted to do, the rep said he thought I'd have to take the new phone to an AT&T store to do what I wanted, but said since AT&T had changed their mind on the upgrade policy, I could simply upgrade my existing phone for the same $299 I was going to pay if I added it as a new line.

I said fine, but asked if I could also get two $99 3G phones and port numbers from Verizon. He said he didn't know, but would check, but another rep overhead me asking and said to my rep, "sure you can do that, just go in the back and grab two 3G's.". To do the porting, the guy needed my Verizon account #, which I didn't have, but he patiently waited whil eI called Verizon to get it. Less than 30 minutes later I left the store with my new 3G-S, and two new $99 3G's, all ported and activated and ready to go. I did end up buying an extra $99 phone, but I'll eBay my 16gig phone, s/b able to get $50 for it (it's mint), after which I'll have only spent $50 more than I planned to.

From the time I arrived at the concierge to the time I walked out the door took less than 45 minutes, and that was for three phones, two of which had to have numbers ported from Verizon. It was one of the two or three best customer experiences I've ever had. Even my 10 YO is happy, because he got my 14 YO's iPod touch!

I will be using my moms upgrade for the iPhone 3gs. But she does not want my iPhone 3g, she wants to keep her Samsung Blackjack. Can someone help me out of what to do?

Exactly what I just did

Just called in to AT&T to try to do an Upgrade Swap and they said if I try to remove the iPhone data plan on the line I upgraded within the first 30 days, I will be charged FULL PRICE for the phone!?! Do I need to do this at an AT&T store or something? The line I used the eligible upgrade on is just a regular phone and doesn't need the data plan.
