I connect to an external monitor at one of my jobs and run dual screens. Wouldn't want to work without it. That's about 60% of my "work" time.

At home I connect to my 32" Sony Bravia TV about 20% of the time and run it in clamshell mode.

my mbp is always connected to my lovely IPS matte display when I'm home, I can hardly wait for lightpeak or some kind of easy way to dock the mbp.. gets silly having to plug/unplug 3usb/1firewire/1ethernet/1minidisplayport/1magsafe plug everyday

I'm surprised there isn't some kind of dock for Mac laptops. A person I work for has a docking station for his Dell computer. All accessories are plugged into the dock and then the laptop plugs into the dock separately. It's very convenient so you guys might want to find out if there is something similar for Macs.

I never thought about looking for one because like I said earlier I don't have much plugged into my laptop so I never found the need for one. It seems there obviously is a demand for a Mac laptop docking station.

Whenever I'm home, my MBP is connected to my monitor. I don't think I could live without it. And plugging/unplugging is no problem for me, since it generally only happens twice a day...

Same here. I just recently bought a 23" monitor that makes use of my MBP at home much easier. I don't like to lay in bed with and when it was on my desk, it was hard to see (Cross between distance from screen and my bad eyes). Since I am currently out of work, I use my MBP at home exclusively. Normally, I just unplug it (only 3 cables: power, DVI, and USB to speakers) when I need to take it with me (when I had class, was going to coffee shop or library, etc.).

Never. I don't even have one :D

1440x900 screen of my MBP is fine for most stuff. If I need more screen space I just use the 20" iMac.

generally 85~90% of the time when im working at home and like the ability to move around.

i like the convenience of the portability and the abilty to use it a desktop like machine.

i used to have all desktop systems...while they were way powerful for what i needed at any given time.
i like the monitor + notebook combo as i can have a quick little dual screen setup if need be to.

I think what hasn't been brought up in detail in this discussion is that I don't think everyone connects their laptops to external monitors. 15" and 17" laptops monitors are pretty large themselves and even when I put my 15" on my desk I don't always connect it to my external monitor because it's good enough for most tasks I do.

There are times when I do need or prefer a larger monitor but my external monitor is a carry over from my old desktop so I didn't buy it just for use with my laptop. It is useful but the more I think about it the more I think I can live without it if I had to.

I'm on campus from 9-6 every day and I use my MacBook pretty much the entire time. When I get home I plug it in to my Samsung display, speakers and usb hub (w/ mouse/keyboard/external attached). Portable all day and desktop at night. Great system.

There is a demand and over the years (since the powerbook days) we've been clammoring for a dock. The only "solution" Apple has given us is their displays (moreso with the most recent Cinema Display with built in Magsafe) and solutions like BookEndz, but we all know steve couldn't handle having a dedicated port for docking on his lovely laptops so its more of a pipe dream.

for the record i'm docked @ home 50% of the time. When it's not in use here its on the go @ school.

I'm sure you are not far from the truth. ;) Apple sometimes takes form over function too much. When all is said and done, my computer is still a tool I use for my needs. In other words I rather own my computer rather than it owning me. :)

Probably 70% of the time. The MacBook Pro 13" is great for couch surfing and portability around school, but you can't beat my Apple cinema display.
