Just move the iPhone up and down while looking at the blue part of the address bar in Safari. Little lines should appear on the screen.

I see what you're looking at. They seem very regular though, which indicates to me that they're scan/raster lines, which would be normal. Most LCD displays have a refresh rate that's part of normal operation, and some people can notice this more easily than others. I wouldn't be surprised if this display has a slower refresh rate than say, a flat panel display or a Laptop LCD, because the power consumption requirements are more stringent.

Unless the pattern you're seeing is irregular, I wouldn't call this a defect, just an artifact of current LCD display technology.

I just kinda sucks because the iPhone costs the same weather you get a screen with lines or you get a screen without them. I've seen iPhone 3Gs BOTH ways. On some of them, it's really bad... on some of them it's hardly noticeable and on a few of them either not there or too hard to see. Unfortunately I got one that's in the middle... noticeable, but not too bad. It's actually better than the first iPhone 3G I had. So yeah, how is that not a defect? Also, just so you know, my girlfriend's first Gen iPod touch has this issue but, my first Gen iPod touch does not.... weird.

so how do i check it in-store? do i remove the plastic film from the screen? is there a plastic film on the back aswell? i am afraid that either the salesperson will not allow that BEFORE i pay or that they will think i am some kind of an obsessed freak... (which, in part, I am). how do u check for bad pixels in-store, for instance?

i think youll have to get a pretty patient salesperson to do all of this. keep in mind 99% of things that you think are defective, they will think is fine...
