You can download it from the Mac App Store. It's a system update.

Not sure if it's the graphics update, or something Apple did to my rMBP after replacing the screen, but I've noticed it runs a lot cooler, and the fans die down a lot faster after heavy load.

And I still don't see the EFI. It just... vanished.

Same with my friend's rMBP. They actually said his Mac didn't have any performance problems but somehow they fixed it when they replaced the screen.

I'm starting to think Apple shipped a bunch of defective rMBPs and it's keeping everything under wraps.

Okay, so it's not just me.

Sounds to me like the "silent cooling tweak" may be a tweak that they can apply to every rMBP sent in for repair then. Maybe they tweaked the fans?

I can confirm that the latest update DID NOT solve the throttling bug.

Anyone else made that observation?

Since I don't have the bug anymore, I can't really say...

But I can say that it didn't improve much if anything at all.

Internal driver was updated to the 30x line instead of the 29x line, but that's it. There's nothing I can see that's different.

I have just gotten my 15" rMBP a week ago, and prior to that, I've been reading up alot on these forums, especially regarding the throttling issues and the need to reset the SMC regularly.

My rMBP shipped with 10.8 and in view of the above mentioned issues, I have taken care not to update my OSX. I use the rMBP mainly for web surfing and playing GW2 (15-20fps @ max res, high shader). I like the visuals a lot and don't mind the compromise to performance.

However, seeing that there's a graphics update, I'm not sure if I should take the leap to update my OSX and risk having the issues, hoping to get a little boost in performance. What do you guys advise?

I just put my Mac to sleep again and when I woke it - bam, bug is back.

Yep the problem is not solved, it comes back on mac sometimes. But the worst case scenario is on windows where nothing helps.

It is impossible to play or use CPU/GPU intensive software on windows, the GPU scales down to 270Mhz and sometimes the CPU also scales down to 1.2Ghz. Impressive isn't it?

Just to let you know that Apple Insider (Some Retina MacBook Pro users complain of graphics issues after EFI update) just published a news about the issue, lets hope we will get a solution soon.

Still, please, take a time to fill a bug report to Apple, I just finished mine. Even if the bug is a duplicate, the more people feedback the soon they may issue a fix.

Great to see that at least one site has finally rendered this issue to an official status. I kind of wish Macrumors would make a news of this, too. ;-)

I have already filed a feedback (actually already 3 :D). I'm really counting on this issue to be resolved with the next update.

bill-p, my friend's rMBP went back to throttling again so whatever they did at the Apple Store is not permanent.

As for the Apple Insider article, glad to see some tech outlet taking the problem seriously. I'm going to tip The Verge and AnandTech, maybe they have something to say about the issue or wouldn't mind relaying the story.

The first time I went to the Apple Store with this issue they reset the SMC and PRAM (both of which I didn't come up with to do myself) which resolved the issue temporarily. Maybe that's the same case here?

As for tipping Verge and Anandtech: Please, that would be great! :)

Just to be clear, I somehow "fixed" the issue myself prior to visiting the Apple Store.

What they did at the Store only effects the cooling of my machine. It's extremely hard to get it to be even warm now. If the fan comes on, then it dies very fast as well.

The temp fix I have for this issue is to use Throttlestop with Fans on max RPM.

It solved all my throttling issue, but its kinda annoying to keep turning up this software just to play the game. :(

shansoft, can you screenshot your ThrottleStop configuration so we can have an idea how you fixed it, exactly ?

Hey there guys, I just noticed this bug appeared in the last few days, and it drove me crazy. Don't ask me how, but I finally found this topic and realized it was related to the EFI upgrade.

Have had my rMBP on 24/7 continuously stressing through various scenarios (Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, XCode, iPhoto, iMovie, etc...) now and still haven't seen the EFI bug back.

I think it's worth a try. Those of us who are affected by this bug may want to try toggling "Power Nap" ON/OFF.

I just did that, and my rMBP has not had the EFI bug back in 2 weeks. Prior to this, I had to reset EFI probably every few hours, which is crazy!

And so I just did this right here (well, just turned it on since it was off), restarted the computer, and everything is back to normal again. How long will it last? We'll see. For now, CoD 4 on the mac partition runs smoothly as before.

I'll try to update this post whenever I test windows on bootcamp. Fingers crossed!

What a mess, so glad I haven't bothered with any updates since I bought this in the summer (running shipped-with version of OS and original EFI).

Will I be forced to update the EFI at some point to access a certain feature?

I'm gaming a lot under W7 and it runs beautifully - I don't want to create any problems for myself.
