There is no free lunch, this does diminish optical performance. People like buzzwords like “periscope camera” without really knowing what they’re actually asking for. The image stabilization will have to be much more advanced to even make such a long lens usable on a handheld device
The 10X periscope lenses on other phones is perfectly usable. I use mine on a regular basis, and my phone is over 2 years old. It's true that the resulting images are not as good as I can achieve on a closer subject with the main lens. But the images are far from unusable.

very excited for pericope lens this year. Been waiting years for apple to bring this to the iphone

Bummer.

Pro Max should be a bigger chassis with a bigger screen and battery, period. Like the iPhone 14 Pro line.
Not more features.
I hear you - I'd probably pay Pro Max prices for a Pro with this feature - but I'm thinking at this point it's more an issue of space availability in the case. Maybe next year....

Boo! I want the periscope lens, but I don't want a bigger, heavier phone. Decisions, decisions...

Because many people want all the features but have no interest in the larger phone. I know I do. That being said, it does appear there is a reason here, potentially due to the size of periscope lens. If that's the case, so be it. But otherwise, I agree with the poster you responded to, that the only difference between Pro models should be the size (when at all possible).
Maybe, I'm mot too bothered myself.
I would note though that in most other cases with items that you buy you tend to get more options the bigger you go.

We’re back to differentiating based on size. Doesn’t make any sense because periscope will probably be on the 16 Pro non-Max model. 🙄
Not sure how that means anything.
Over the years features tend to filter down to lesser models.

You mean it doesn't only cost $4 to add a $4 part to a device? Someone has to design and engineer that part to work? Someone has to test it and refine the design? Someone has to update the software of the camera app to work with it? Someone has to market it? Someone has to support it?
Correct. Pretty sure an entirely new camera lens isn’t going to just “plug and play” with iOS.

$4 part becomes $6 to as a margin. Then they have to pay back all investment they put into the engineers who redesigned the chassis of the phone, the ribbon cable locations. The software devs who got it working in iOS. The production line changes to accommodate a new “$4” part

So a proper bezel lacks a notch but has a huge bezel around a home button?
All I'm saying is, I can't imagine that anyone would suffer either a notch or a cutout in their TV or computer monitor, the only screen layout that makes any sense to me or holds any interest for me is the face layout on my 8 Plus or the current SE 2. I'll go so far to wager that if Apple were to offer both the current cutout face design or the SE 2 face design as options for their Pro models with their next release that the latter would be the more popular model.

Well, my opinion.

I know rumors are just that, but is it pretty much confirmed the Max model will be the only one to receive this or is this one of those situations like when people thought the iPhone 13 Pro Max would be the only one to get the high refresh display?

Damn, looks like I will have to get a Pro Max again because of feature limitations on the Pro. Did the same with the 12 Pro Max because it had a 47% larger sensor and 2.5X optical vs. 2X on the Pro.

I absolutely hated the iPhone 6 Plus which is the only other big phone I've used. Back then reachability wasn't as extensive, especially on the keyboard, and we didn't have shortcuts for things. But it was also underpowered for the 1080p display and things would crash all the time and didn't seem like it had enough RAM. The 12 Pro Max was definitely better for a big phone, but I still don't care much for the size.

I'll have to see how far the zoom is. If it goes from 2X to 10X that would be something and allow for more of a smooth transition from the normal wide to zoom so there isn't digital zoom between 2X 12MP and 3X optical 12MP like we have now.

If it starts at 3X and goes to 10X that's still pretty good. But if it's like 3X to 5X, then idk if that's worth it to me, and I'm not talking about price, I'm just talking about form factor. I would absolutely pay $100 more to get a 3X to 5X optical zoom on an iPhone 15 Pro. That's nothing. But for me it has to be some significant zoom to make it worth the tradeoff of carrying around a big ass phone. But I get that at first they might just not have the internal space on the smaller Pro model for a periscope.

Any possibility this is only in an iPhone Ultra? I remember hearing rumors about that and quite frankly I don't get what would differentiate such a device. On 3nm, would the M3 be able to go into an iPhone Ultra? Would it be thicker with more battery and more durable with a lip around the glass and thicker glass with titanium? Would it add something crazy like a fourth rear camera only for extreme low-light photography or something? Honestly the periscope thing sounds like something it would have to differentiate it above the Pro level. What would be cool is if we could get just a single periscope that went from 0.5X to 10X but that's probably beyond the capabilities of current lens design. Also in periscope I think the sensor is oriented perpendicular to the phone? So larger sensors would be lost and you wouldn't get those 48MP wide RAW shots.

If they do an Ultra, though, I'd want periscope lens, 3 day battery life, titanium, M3 chip, split screen multitasking, overbuilt rugged design (no case for real, especially since it's thicker), even larger wide sensor for better low-light, mLED display, USB-C fast charging, a faster 30W MagSafe wireless charging, the addition of unlocking with Touch ID in the lock button like the iPad Air, proper stereo speakers (larger drivers that project from top and bottom) and a tiny dynamic island or under-display completely with an area at the top left open for dynamic-island apps to appear when needed but with a background color that blends into whatever app instead of black.

we could imagine the reason/ excuse which Apple would make when they explain why it is only exclusive to 15 pro max. but it won't convince people to agree and doubt why the biggest tech company in the world needs an extra year to overcome the "difficulties" and be able to put that periscope lens in 16 pro.

We all know the tricks. it is just a matter of time for apple fans to get out of the wall until another new "Apple" appears

I’m on at least a 2 year cycle now, but this makes it certain I won’t be tempted to upgrade this year. As others have stated I have no interest in carrying a phone as big and heavy as the Pro Max.

What do you expect when a $900 iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t even have telephoto? 😂 Apple keeps telephoto and Pro motion only for Pro models. It is expected that a higher feature will be exclusive to the more expensive model. I think the Pro Max won’t even get the periscope. It will be exclusive to the Ultra model to justify the higher price point.
