And yet a trillion dollar company still can't get a conversational Siri working yet. Apple is so far behind it's ridiculous, at this rate Apple is going to go the way of Blackberry when it comes to AI.

Apple, either ditch the current useless Siri and integrate ChatGPT throughout the entire OS, or just buy someone for christ sake, you aren't short of money.

Oh good ... so a third party voice assistant can be listening and lurking in the background while you're on another app on the iPhone?

Not a new concept, but it's almost like no one even cares about their privacy anymore.
We lost the war on privacy, got over it. We have cellular companies monitoring our location and more and more CCTV setups are being equipped with facial recognition. Airlines are even rolling out facial recognition to replace boarding passes.

1. lol wut? You have to have some evaluation for AI if you're going to expect a positive ROI

2. Because Apple historically wants to control and own their core technologies
1. If Apple can drop billions on a car project that went absolutely nowhere purely to satisfy Timmy's wishes, I'm sure they can risk a bit on something that might actually work and might help them stay ahead of the competition. Not everything should be about short-term ROI.

2. That didn’t stop them from integrating Siri with ChatGPT, did it? To be fair, they did include some privacy safeguards around it but still, everyone is pure until it is time to cash the cheque.

I’ve been giving it a try, and while it’s a step in the right direction, the lack of conversation memory really holds it back. I gave it access to my contacts and location, asked it to take me home (which is saved on my contact card), and it had absolutely no idea what I meant. Tried ‘send a message to my wife’ again, no clue who she was, even though she’s clearly marked in my contacts. It can’t manage basic things like adjusting the volume either. Promising, but still very much in ‘bless its heart’ territory.

I'm actually shocked. Apple has always been at the forefront. We know there's been a completely boondoggle regarding their AI but now with Perplexity, I just say add an appointment to my calendar or set a reminder and it's done. ChatGPT can't do that right now. Apple what the hell is wrong with you? Oh I know you on a weight loss campaign for your phones.

I've been flipping around between perplexity and ChatGPT. I really like the voice feature for instant feedback and having the close caption option right there in case you're a busy room. I've been using Siri less than less lately, and I completely removed HomeKit from the equation in my smart system. Maybe whenever they update the new model it'll be better but for right now perplexity he's definitely the way to go.

And the worst part? Simple little things. It still needs to connect to ChatGPT.

I've only recently switched to Apple like maybe four years ago? And everybody outside of the Apple ecosystem sees them that way too. I was really surprised with how Siri is a massive fail. Beyond the basic: weather, time in X location or classic 'turn lights off' etc it really is lacking.

The Assistant from Perplexity also works in Polish, which is unattainable for Apple. Apple is too lazy to create anything for Central Europe and Portugal.
It works in Slovak language too. We never had Siri in our native language so this is AMAZING. AND IT WORKS incredibly well.

Apple have not made anything impressive software wise in ages. In fact it is just bad software. I don't understand how they has become so bad. Quota hiring? Bad leadership? All resources to memojis?

I'd put good money on the 33% of iPhone users that even bother with Siri, whomare not the more technically inclined members of a forum such as this only ever using Siri to set timers or add appointments.

A person needs to have a use for Siri. I do not, so I leave it disabled at every aspect of my iPhone and iPad. Siri is nice, but most people were convinced they needed Siri to manage their daily lives. For many of us that are still capable of critical thinking, decision making, and managing our lives...Siri is unneeded.

On my recent flight from Virginia to Dallas, Texas, the American Airlines and Marriott BonVoy app did a wonderful job of informing me of time frames. I had zero need for Siri.

It kind of does have to do with old people and their old ideas honestly, Apple needs new blood

Essentially, I would agree with this. Apple went from a company ( under Jobs ) with innovation first, and then business savvy, to a company led by a logistics officer who sees only the best way to make the most money from the logistics of product procurement, development and marketing. That left out innovation.

Apple attempted to convince us of their innovative ideas with spiffy marketing which did nothing to actually drive innovation, but it did convince a great many Apple users.

Apple needs to go into a long period 'business silence' and look inward, correcting their judgement errors about creating useless eye candy features, and then fix the existing bugs. This latest fiasco with the photo gallery was driven by AI, well, that pissed a lot of us off. It was nothing more that eye candy to accommodate AI and to reflect the failed innovative minds of Apple designers.

Harsh I know. Sorry.

I went to the Perplexity link and asked "Why am I ugly"...instead of giving me a genetic reason related to both of my parents, diet, etc....it game me a touchy warm, emotional response.

That is not AI...that is programming. :)

So does this work on device? Or does it send all my commands, to some server to process?

Have any of y’all actually tried this thing? Apple should most definitely not buy it. It cannot even find the Apple Store closest to me. It resorted to asking me to tell her where it was. You can’t trust your life details to this technology. All llm’s have the same basic problem: they can’t reliably answer questions or do functions that are critical and that’s the problem Apple is trying to solve.

Wrong. It's run by young people who don't give much attention to quality control. They are constantly dishing out new stuff that always needs update fixes,
