Hey everyone, I don't have as much as a problem as much as I am curious to see if this is affecting any owners of the 2014 Retina iMac — the first model of the 5K that came out in late 2014. I am also curious of potential long-term effects of this on the whole computer itself.

The machine has been working wonderfully for me since initially purchasing it. I've used it consistently, every day, hours on end. But as of the last few months, I've noticed a consistent problem with screen retention, particularly my menu bar and the header of my internet browser infused in the screen.

This panicked me at first, but I sought the solution of a bright white background to flush it out and restore it. That pretty much sets it straight (as well as hiding the menu bar), but herein lies the problem: it seems to happen consistently. At least every few days, now, I notice some retention. It isn't a problem to quickly fix, but it seems to default back every time

Is this screen dying out and will this affect my files and data? Should I consider a repair even if my AppleCare ran out on it fairly recently? I don't want my computer to randomly die one day. It doesn't seem to have any issues or snags aside from this screen issue, all things considered.

I should note that recently I've swapped out the RAM with Crucial memory (I maxed it out at 32GB), but I can't imagine these RAM sticks are doing anything to it, right?

Anyone have any advice? Potential long-term fixes? I'm currently running High Sierra and on the updated version if that is any consideration. Would the OS have anything to do with the burn-in? I don't recall this being an issue until recently. It seems to occur at the top left, near-center of the screen and nowhere else on any side, if this helps anyone pinpoint an issue.

I honestly don't mind a quick flush of the screen, because the computer works well for me. The idea of bringing this huge computer to an Apple Store is a hindrance, likely pricey, and not something I want to do unless it's an emergency affecting my daily computing. So far, nothing except some screen retention is what is going on. I just want to make sure this isn't some sort of early sign of a failing computer or anything like that for those who know more than me about this stuff.

Thanks for reading and for any advice!

It happens on some screens, not a lot you can do apart from replace the screen, it is just a screen issue and will have no effect on the rest of the computer. I’m assuming you don’t have Apple care so it’s probably best just to put up with it until you buy a new computer.

Samuelsan2001 - I don't buy it's "just a screen issue" - What makes me say this is that the high contrast image I have on my desktop does not leave a burn-in if I change it to a flat color, and yet I can still see the burn in from the previously open windows when I change it out! - Why are open window only causing burn-in? Seems to be a OS software bug to me. It also started suddenly for me too. Went from zero burn-in to 15% burn-in overnight. I updated to High Sierra late last week, the problem emerged soon after this. It all brings me back to the late 80s! Apple experts need to stop responding to this with a link to Energy saver preferences settings tips! It's moronic.
[doublepost=1513346846][/doublepost]Cool Pup, does your desktop image leave a burn-in? Mine doesn't, just the open windows. Just change your desktop to a solid dark grey or black and see if it does.
