Actually, there are 6 different cases (aluminum, space-grey aluminum, stainless steel, space-grey stainless steel, gold and rose gold), effectively doubling the combinations to 1008. And as there are 38 and 42mm sizes, with different (in size) straps for each size, there are 2016 combinations.

Still far from millions, unless we count the change in the color of the time/date font (some faces allow this) as well as the option to rearrange some "modules" in some watch faces...

The 504 was already taking into account the 2 face sizes, so we are still barely cracking a thousand. Here's hoping for custom faces, I can only imagine what some creative devs are capable of.

Yes, I think that's what they are doing, kinda pushing the concept of 'Different Face Options'

For example, on one face, you may have say 3 areas, and on those 3 areas, you may be able to change the areas to one of 8 info displays, so math all that together, just for that one face (4 areas, each with 8 options) then math that together with all the case, strap options, and do this for the other faces also.

you could probably get to millions, though I accept it's pushing it, like you saying your Mac desktop comes with millions of layouts of icons.

Yes Yes Yes........

I have no doubt Devs will be allowed to create custom watch faces to be submitted to, and approved by Apple, to be sold on the Watch App Store.

You say this so confidently, but this is the company that didn't have wallpapers on iOS until v4. I'm hesitant to confidently assume any sort of customizability.

Well.

Apple loves thinking thru, deeply ways to make money.
They know people will want to pick their own personal watch faces.
They know they can make money from this.

I would like them to allow anyone to make their own personal watch face, but I've been saying all along that I don't see them allowing that.

1: An inappropriate watch face could portray their device in a bad light.
2: They can make money by selling them instead

I don't think they would turn down the money to be made from tens of thousands of people downloading 'Apple Approved' Watch face designs.

The App Store has lots of wallpaper apps that offer all different kinds of wallpapers for your iOS device. I would imagine something similar for watch faces. And then people will complain that Steve Jobs would never have allowed custom watch faces; that he would have designed the best most beautiful watch face you'd ever seen and that would be good enough for everyone.
There's a difference between wallpapers and watch faces. Apple has traditionally kept control over the look and feel of the interface. Apple does not allow iOS devices to have the option to customize fonts, color schemes, custom icons.

I would be surprised to see Apple allow custom watch faces. I think that the closest they'll get is allowing images to be used as a background on one or more of the canned faces.

How's this any different from someone doing likewise on the iPhone home or lock screen? If anything, it'll reflect badly on the user and people will care less about the watch itself.

Yes, you are right.

However, the wallpaper or lock screen is just a tiny part of say an iPhone of an iPad, it's very secondary to the device.

My feeling is, and it's just my personal view. The face of the Watch is a BIG fundamental aspect of this new device. The face 'IS' the watch.

Again, I may be talking total rubbish, and am 100% totally wrong, and Apple comes out with a 'Designer Kit' so that everyone can create their own personal watch face.

Being able to set your back image, and separate images for the hands of the watch.

I really really REALLY hope they do. And hats off to Apple if they do let people do this. I will be very impressed with them if they give the user this freedom.

I very much want to be wrong.

Thought I remember Cook saying you could use a photo as a watch face. If so then wonder if it would this be for all or just certain watch movements? Seems to be best on a digital watch and would likely be busy on most analog movements.

Whatever it launches if enough want it then it possible Apple would open an API up for App development. Apple's biggest concern would probably be about copyright watch faces being offered.

We don't know yet. Could just be for the digital face below currently found on apple.com or they may introduce more faces.

Well Apple has really been pushing the personal angle of this device calling it the most personal device they've ever created and all so this might be a case where they allow more customization. Especially if developers indicate high interest in creating them.

True, but Apples's definition of "personal" is different than the layperson's definition. Also keep in mind that the iPhone didn't have the ability for custom wallpaper until ios 4... This is worth considering since you have drawn parallels between the iPhone and the awatch ( with regard to adoption rate)

True but Steve and Scott aren't here any more so things could be different.

That face is not possible in the Apple watch as the graphics go too close to the metal frame.
The real thing would be smaller on the screen

Yeah, but it looks quite nice

Another concept, Matrix watch

Yes it looks fun with images like that.

A side issue, that I think every single time i see a photo like that is the sams as when Apple show the latest iMac's

The photo taken as just the right angle as to make the device look a lot thinner than it is.

I think this every single time I see that watch angle image :)

They show plenty of direct side views on the website, but it'll look thinner on the wrist because of the way the straps are attached, unlike the Moto 360 which sticks out more because the straps are attached at the bottom.

Yes, of course it will also depend on who's wearing it. :)

The straps on the Moto 360 are particularly nasty looking and make it look far worse that it could do.

The Moto360 could and does look a LOT nicer with a nice chunky segmented metal strap to go with it.

Tone it all down to a very dark colour of Steel/Titanium and it looks almost like a totally different product.

God knows why they did such a potentially impressive bit of work on the main body, then made it look cheap and tacky at the last moment.

Benedict Evans is currently using a Moto Almost 360 and he tweeted some observations. One he said it was functional but pedantic. He said the software was missing 'delight'. Basically just a big gadget. I find those comments interesting as when I was watching the :apple:Watch video and demo the first thing that stood out to me is how alive and animated the software felt. Physics engine has to be in play here. For me Android Wear is almost too perfect. It's functional but feels very cold and clinical whereas Watch OS feels more vibrant and alive. More fun with more personality. Makes me wonder if there aren't certain Watch OS features that might come to iOS in a future version.

My first thought was "dear god I hope so", but having thought about it jailbreaking a device with Pay on it is probably going to disable that service entirely, unless the JB community can avoid JB detection..?

I wouldn't put this past the jb community too bypass Apple security.

Apple isn't offering more faces. Watch Faces are not just background images. Although there is one face where you can set your own background.

Here is what apple means by millions - right from their own website:

Most faces are extensively customizable — you can change colors, choose design elements, and add functionality. So one Apple Watch can have literally millions of different appearances.

All of that customization was demoed at the event.

Doesn't mean 3rd parties wouldn't be able to do the same. Maybe it won't be available right away (similar to 3rd party watch bands) but I'll bet eventually Apple opens up the watch to both.

Apple currently allows third party devs to make live wallpapers, right? I feel that's a little more akin to a watchface.

Here's what will happen, I suspect. There will be the supplied watch faces, all of which will have a lot of customizations within certain design parameters (i.e. you can change the style of the hands but only to the styles Apple has pre-selected). Then in the app store you'll find licensed watch faces. This will be Disney and Looney Tunes and Harry Potter and Popeye and so on. Those will cost money. And then you'll finally get independent third party devs who will offer different watch faces, some for money, others for free, and of course all of those faces will have to follow Apple's guidelines (i.e. no pornographic or copyrighted material, etc.).

Finally you'll be able to use your own photo with the digital watch face. This is where you can put a penis or a photo of a Rolex watch face (and Rolex may make an app with a bunch of faces for $10 or something) or whatever you want. However, the photo will be static, not animated like the app store ones will.
