I'm a big Apple fan, but there's no way anyone can say that one comment on one application is a sign of Apple becoming more "open". Still silence on Google Voice and dozens or hundreds of other randomly removed applications which might be similar to what Apple has released.

And to be clear, Apple has a monopoly on the iPhone market. It's not illegal, but it's a fact. And they use this monopoly power to control the iPhone application market. Whether they are abusing that power is a matter for lawyers.

Yeah and every company has a monopoly on every product they sell.

Lets be fair and balanced here. People complained that M$ used monopolistic powers with their OS by having their apps optimized for the OS. Apple is taking it to another level by restricting apps on their OS altogether. Thus what apple is worse than M$ has ever done... All the more reason to jailbreak the iphone or go with android...
Perhaps when Symbian allows all developers to write apps for their OS, all will be fair in the world.

True that!

lmao :D he'd be awfully busy!

honestly this whole thing is getting ridiculous. according to apple's rules safari should be only for mature users, so why do they sell it with safari enabled by default to customers of any age?

Maybe because Safari is not a store like the App store, you think you can walk to Wal Mart and demand they sell cookies you made at home. The App store is a closed system period!

Alas in my interactions with the mundane masses I have yet to find another Mac user much less a MacRumors one. We're the cream of the crop for the most part here even if you're just reading off of the Page 1 RSS feed.

Still, I noticed that the same day we get the iTunes 8.2.1 vs. Pre news here it's on the local news broadcast. The same day Palm fixes it, it's on the news again. Even the pedestrian local media here picked it up.

I'm going to agree though it's not even going to register on the minds of the unwashed masses. The app store niggles as you put it are going to show up on every joe blogs site. The user base is its own worst enemy.
Hachi Machi!

Hehe, "The Critic." Yes indeed. ;)

"I swear they were baked, hash free, I swear!!!'

Apple doesn't necessarily want to be responsible for problems/entanglements which might result from approving questionable apps on their platform. BTW, thanks for the tip, I have some unopened items I wanted to return to Amazon. I'll just put 'em up for sale at Walmart instead - much more convenient!

Great show, more like "Hachi-MAAhchi!"
I'm glad that there are others that can appreciate that little bit of The Critic humor.

Still, whatever Apple does they're still somehow going to step on a landmine of bloggers and news sites, Apple dedicated or not, each with their own chance of literary missteps leading toward yet another quagmire.

Time for another 1,000 posts on MacRumors!

Goes with the territory - adjustments will be made, policies will be amended, and outrage will be maintained.

It is the fanboys and sycophantic imbeciles who give this moron Gruber his audience. My objection about this current "story" is that it is breaking into the mainstream and helping to give the non-journalist Gruber credibility.

- edited to add that this message was actually a response to an amusing "fanboy photo"... sadly, since removed.

SG1, Arn, and myself have all read the article. I think it's fair to say that all 3 of us disagree slightly with each other. There's not one way of looking at this.

But what we all have in common is that our thoughts seem to have nothing to do with yours. It seems that actually reading the article at least puts us all on the same side of the room, even if we then have differences between us.

My point is, I can barely understand why you'd watse time to write about things you haven't read, but I certainly can't understand why you'd come back to brag about your own ignorance!

Sweet Lordie. Who gives a **** about some dictionary app, or what Gruber thinks about it, or what Gruber thinks about Apple or the AppStore, or what Gruber thinks about ANYTHING? That IS the point. It also seems irony is beyond you.

The fact that a) MacRumours feels the need to report about Gruber; and b) that Schiller feels the need to write to Gruber about something that does not concern him in any way, shape or form, is the story. Gruber is illegitimate in the eyes of everyone except the fanboy sycophants. I can only conclude you are in that category. God help you.

After reading all that mumbo jumbo... Can't the dev just submit an app uncensored and maintain it's 17+ rating? Or keep the app censored possibly removing objectionable slang n drop it's rating down?

I mean what is the big deal here?

The Developer in there haste went ahead anyway and refused to listen to Apple Request. Causing them Multi-bile App Rejections.

If you'd like to pay the developer while they wait for
Apple, I'm sure your contribution would be welcome ;)

I actually like Gruber, most of the time. Not all the time. ;)

Daring Fireball isn't just about Apple, though. It's worth a visit now and then.

I find it funny that a country so stuck up about swear words and breast on television are quite happy for a bar called 'hooters' to display the well endowed assets of the female sex to cliental.

Maybe the US should focus on getting their kids behaving like civilised beings before nit picking over swearing - its only language, nothing particular earth shattering about a 15 year old saying ****, ****, **** and so forth.

Or Apple could direct those who are both reviewing and communicating with developers to give clear answers, not useless PR speak that is being reported in cases like this.
Exactly! Stop using form letters, Apple. They're not helpful. Or, if you must, at least provide more specific info. The current canned responses are much too generic. What I'd like to see is an option to actually TALK to the reviewer of your app. Limit it to one phone call or something if you must, but you'd be surprised what could be accomplished when people talk to each other even if just for 5 minutes!

After all, its a lot more mature and shows that you care (you would be ahead of microsoft on this one

I find it amusing that you have so much personal rancor for someone you've likely never met. The volume and frequency of your protests really just makes it sound like you're jealous of his success.

what do I do?

I have a crossword puzzle aid utility. Every word that people have posted that has managed to get an app rejected is in my app. I have more than 1.3mil 'words' in the app. Do I submit and get rejected until they run out of naughty words to reject me for? What about slang? "shag" ? I think it's a joke. Personally, I'm just not going to update my software... it can rot until apple fixes their joke of a review process. I'm over 10 years old... I am not afraid of naughty words or naughty pictures. If apple *does* want to get into something, how about stop trying to enforce a false morality and look into media right -- so many apps are using media where it is clear the author does NOT have the right to use the media... but that's ok -- apple needs to wait for the proper owner (or someone else?) to complain -- but just like PBS once tried to censor things for its own amu-----t, it failed miserably, and so is apple.
