I for one think its a rip off, $249 to $299 TOPS. Thanks to the overpriced, in sufficient hardware, especially resolution it made my buying the Kindle Fire HD that much easier.

No one is forcing you to purchase a mini. If the Fire is of greater value to you, by all means purchase it. This crazy idea that we're entitled to get the very best for next to nothing doesn't make economic sense.

What frustrates me is that, not only iPad mini is expensive in EU, bot what's worse the new iPad 4 is _dearer_ than iPad 3 was! iPad 3 was €479, with iPad 4 being €509...

With no alternative (but iPad mini...)

Euro isn't doing all that well against the dollar right now.

Price is meaningless really.

Those who have been around, and are long time Apple enthusiasts are used to the fat margins Apple commands.

Those who haven't, cough up the money anyway... gotta have that fruity logo.

And the rest of the masses are busy keeping up with the Jones.. even if that means maxing out their credit cards, or selling whatever they can to get what's cool and trendy.

Ah yes the power of clever marketing, ya gotta hand it to Apple. :)

I guess you are too young to remember how everyone crapped on Apple in the late 90s. What a difference 10 years make.

iOS is suck, ipad is too expensive, iphone is too expensive, macbook pro retina is too expensive, ipad mini is too small

went with android, dont wait me more dear Apple.

The $329 price is way to high for what Apple is offering (low res display, old A5 processor, and 512MB ram-most likely).

The Apple sheep will buy the product and love it until 6 months later (look at the iPad 3 outcry and that was actually a solid upgrade from the iPad 2) comes out current specs for the same price.

At $249-$299 you can overlook the outdated internals and externals of the device. At $329 I expect it to be much better than that.

Just like a hyundai is a better deal than a BMW, both get u to point a to b. but BMW looks, feels, better 10 time more fun. So I pay more money for a better experience. Hence why I buy apple products

BMW's don't come with outdated engines and transmissions though. They also usually have soft touch materials and not hard materials. The nexus 7 actually its closer to that than the mini.

Yeah Nexus is great, I guess we won't be seeing you around on this site anymore. See you.

lol, I'm not leaving these forums just because I like Android-based products. If it wasn't for Apple, Android wouldn't be this good today (if it even existed), nor would the associated hardware. Besides, regardless of whether I like Android, I still admire Apple products. I've owned my fair share of those and still own the excellent 15" rMBP :D.

They have to leave room for a price drop when the next gen iPad mini 2 comes out 6-12 months from now.

The product will do well because it's in the right range for the holiday shopping season (any new Apple product will easily sell during this time, it makes sense to keep prices higher). They can always come out with a next gen mini in Q1 2013 with retina for $329.

So basically they can the newest mini for $329 and the prev gen mini for around $250.

.

Around here, you can ONLY like Apple products and you can't admit when Android has a better product in a specific line.

Alright, stay, but you have to buy the first round.:)

In this case they're keeping the price way up there...they're just racing to the bottom on screen resolution and PPI.

What other choice did they have, if they wanted it to be 7.9 inches and run all iPad apps with no changes? A retina display? It would cost a lot more than $329, be thicker, heavier, run hotter, and wouldn't have 10 hours of battery life.

Fantastic. Hopefully you go post elsewhere now.

People like you are ridiculous. Just because Amazon and various Android tablet makers decide to take a loss or sell at cost, it doesn't mean that Apple should, or needs to.

Personally, I'd rather have a device that's not filled with ads, has a viable App Store with tablet-specific apps, and actually works well. To me, that's worth an extra $50-100 over cheap, low-end products.

But by all means. Go enjoy your plastic tablet.

We where ready to order 1400 units at $250.00 so if he thinks us not ordering 1400 units doesn't matter then good for him.
We will have no choice but to get another tab for the 'every student gets a pad' that the school will be implementing.

Apple works for it's investors, not for the people they sell products to.

Which is what I think a sad development. Apple has made tremendous profits over the years and never had to please its investors. Until Cook became CEO, dividends were not even considered. There seems to be a shift towards pleasing the shareholders and the stock markets lately, which is something that never was so present under Jobs' tenure. If it's all about making profits now, then I'm interested in seeing what Apple will be doing in the next years.

I think Apple fans should be more critical sometimes and have an open attitude towards competitors as well. I love my Mac and my iPhone, and I think iOS is definitely a great OS. But at the same time, Android has seen significant improvements. It offers many of the same features, many features iOS doesn't have (e.g. widgets) and sometimes even features that were taken from iOS and are even better now (just look at Google's Voice Search feature). iOS is not ahead of the competition anymore as it was when introduced. Sure, iOS has still a big market with hundreds of thousands of apps. But at the same time, developers are porting their apps to Android as well. With the potential of Android rising, this will change on an increasing scale. And in that time, I would like to see Apple being more competitive in innovation again and not relying on past successes and the market share it currently holds.

The iPad Mini is an example of that. Of course it will sell like hotcakes, even with that price. Of course customers will be happy, regardless whether it has no Retina display and no A6 chip. The iPad enjoys a good reputation in the tablet market and will probably continue to do so for the coming years. But at the same time, the competition is not standing still. Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire are remarkable devices. Maybe not of such high-end quality as the iPad, but more than enough to show themselves. The iPad Mini on the other hand comes in part with last year's technology and shows even in early hands on that the A5 chip is not capable of delivering the same performance as the other iPads (e.g. noticeable lags in Maps) and the lack of the incredibly hyped Retina display is almost disturbing. This device could have been better, it could have provided the same experience as its bigger brother, but it just doesn't. Apple is intentionally holding back, and I find that very disappointing. It becomes really hard to justify buying Apple products if the competition is doing such a good job too.

same problem here, bmw won't lower their price so made my decision to buy a trabant much easier. the trabant has 4 wheels and 4 seats and gets me from a to b and it is is better than a bmw. then i woke up

Nexus 7 - higher ppi, NFC, more RAM, quadcore, GPS, $100 less expensive...

More RAM? The highest you can get the Nexus 7 is 16 gigs, the iPad mini starts at 16 gigs. EDIT: okay, as everyone has stated, this isn't the RAM we're talking about. From what I can see, and I'm sure all the helpful people will correct me if I'm wrong, but we aren't sure what the RAM will be on the iPad mini yet...as Apple doesn't really release that spec. iFixit will tear it down and we'll know, but I have a feeling it will be 1gig, as is the iPhone 5 now. Have a feeling they'll go with this across the board on the new iPad mini and the 4th generation iPad.

Also, comparing the prices of the 16 gig Nexus 7 and the entry level iPad mini is only 80 bucks, not 100 bucks. Sure, only 20 bucks away from a cool 100, but still.

Also, what does a quad-core processor do for you? Can you show me specific examples on the Nexus 7 where this shows it outshines other things? I'm not talking about "oh, it's two more cores so it MUST be better". I'm talking about specific examples. I'd be interested in seeing why this is so important on a tablet.

NFC, meh...kind of neat, but no real practical uses for it yet. Though would be cool to get those little stickers that you can wave your device in front of to change the settings in relation to where you are. Like have a sticker at the door to your house you wave it in front of to turn off bluetooth and the GPS, then one in your car to turn those things on, and turn off WIFI. Things like that. Otherwise...meh.
