In Poland ""the cheapest"" ipad mini costs ... 500 $ ...
it's a robbery ...

I'm gonna to buy samsung galaxy tab 2

Do you have VAT in Poland?

same problem here, bmw won't lower their price so made my decision to buy a trabant much easier. the trabant has 4 wheels and 4 seats and gets me from a to b and it is is better than a bmw.

Especially downhill :)

to be fair, the entire market dropped based off rumors of bernanke eventually leaving the fed chair post. apple along with everyone else was hit. a one time drop that seemingly happened coincidentally with the rest of every major stock conglomerated into the whole DJI isn't enough to claim AAPL went down because of the mini.

just as when they release their iphone 5 numbers, their stock will go up, but the market as a whole today is rebounding.

long term vs. random ***** of the day.

Funniest post of the day. Of course the market went down because of the Bernake retirement rumor lol. If he retires, the over inflated POS (stock market) will sink faster than the Titanic. 0% interest rates, Operation Twist, QE to infinity, stock market PPT, $16T national debt, $125T in unfunded liabilities. This whole things about to implode and most are oblivious to downright clueless. Could you imagine Bernake being replaced by a Volcker like individual? 20% interest rates anyone? Apple won't be immune to what's coming. We're past the point of no return.

Apple is charging a premium price for a product stuffed with old technology.

Seriously, a dumb move by Apple. I agree that they shouldn't sell at cost (like Amazon and Google), but Apple had a unique opportunity to effectively close the door on its competitors and it chose not to.

They would have closed the doors on themselves as well. It would have killed iPad 4 sales as well as their competitors.

Considering that the competitors are selling their product at cost, it's not a bad idea for Apple to make money upfront with the higher price of the iPad mini. However, I think that it is still priced too high, even psychologically. I think Apple could have priced this at $299 (appearing to look just under the $300 mark) and still make a substantial profit.

Many people are missing the point. Usability is much more important than specs alone for a smaller tablet.

1. The iPad mini weighs 10.88 oz vs. 13.9 oz and 11.1 oz for the Kindle Fire HD and B&N Nook HD. Every bit of weight makes a big difference when reading with one hand for a long time. While 3 oz seems minimal, the Kindle Fire will feel like a brick after holding it for 15 minutes or longer with one hand.

2. Despite being lighter, the screen is almost 1" larger than the other 7" tablets. I would personally prefer a 1024x768 larger screen than a 1280x720 smaller screen. I will agree that 1024x768 was obviously pixelated on the 9.7" iPad 1 and 2 screen, but 1024x768 is fine for a 7.9" screen. Many do not remember, but that used to be a standard resolution for a 15" computer monitor. Would it be nice to have a 2048x1536 resolution screen? Yes, but not at the expense of more weight, larger battery, etc. Again, low weight is critical for a small tablet.

3. Apple ecosystem - l don't have time to dick around trying to set up a new Android based tablet rebuying apps, or hacking and downloading free software, or messing with rooting a Nook because I want to get out of B&N's proprietary store. I, and millions of others who have iPods, iPhones and iPads, can just sync and immediately start using the iPad mini immediately with it perfectly set up with play lists, all game saves transferred over, all contacts, books, etc. That alone is worth a few hundred bucks.

I am not currently in the market for a small tablet. But, if I was, I would get the iPad mini over any of the other current 7" tablets available.

This site is really starting to suck more and more with a whole bunch of bit**'n and moan'n. It's easy to see when you see most critical ppl who have joined this site most recently. To you google children, I know it's been easy for you growing up in the "world of free", but it's not. Google and Amazon sell AT COST! Hello, wake up? Do you know how companies operate? By revenues, margins and profits. Apple makes theirs off of hardware, there is a reason they charge next to nothing for software, and please don't even get me started on... "Well it's such a crappy update it should be free!". You people make me sick. You're the people that everything is great but no body is happy. You feel entitlement with crap that has only existed a few years. Just to let you know, nothing if free, nothing. Get that through your head. Not googles services, not facebook, not music, not money, or "free" handouts from the government. It has to all be PAID for some way.

Hey, if you want a device that makes a company $0 in profit, sure go for Fire or Nexus. You pay for it by selling your personal life to them. Google wants to know everything about you and sell it to advertisers. For Amazon, they can ban your account and everything you've purchased w/ them is gone. No appeal. I'm not saying apple is a saviour or anything, but at least I know where they are making their money. No shady tricks about it being "free". So just put up w/ whatever you want, stop your moaning, and bend over for any company cuz you're already use to it by the government, and I don't care which party is in power, they all want you to bend over.

There was a time I'd buy this, but now I'll take that 350 bucks and use it to offset the value my iPad 3 just dropped thanks to your shenanigans, Apple. Buy this at 329 and you'll release a retina version within a year? No, thank you.

Fool me once...

Wouldnt doubt they would release it as a mid cycle update somewhere around March.

I guess you are too young to remember how everyone crapped on Apple in the late 90s. What a difference 10 years make.

Nope seasoned Apple user here: I've been an Apple enthusiast / customer since 1991, the System 7 days.

Bought a boat load of stock at $20, kept it, added to it annually and today I'm a very happy APPL shareholder...

The rest is minutia. :D

I won't be buying one and my decision is based solely on price alone. If it was $250 I would have bought one.

I've owned every mobile Apple product on Day 1 for the last five years. This will be the first product I do not plan to buy until the price drops.

Hmmm... Phil's argument isn't one that breeds a sense of compassion for Apple, and infact exhibits the opposite for most.

Using the case that the iPad sold very well at $399 so we're going to sell at $349 for the iPad Mini, regardless (that we could, but won't...).

It's the dismissive tone that most will imply Apple simply charge more, because they can - which doesn't sit well with people.

I agree. He seems to be addressing Apple's shareholders or the board, rather than potential customers.

Reuters reports, however, that Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller was quick to defend the iPad mini's pricing yesterday based on what the company has seen with the full-size iPad.

Typical blogger tricks. Making up a scandal to get page hits.

The decision is easy. If you don't like the price, don't buy the product. Go get something else and be happy. Believe me, you aren't going to hurt Apple's feelings.

I'm a huge Apple fan and have been for years but It's my opinion that they are really starting to price gouge now. There has always been the "Apple Tax" but it's getting out of hand. Not just the iPad Mini but other products as well i.e. 13" MacBook Pro Retina and even pushing the price up $100 on the iMacs. I guess now they don't need to discount the previous models. I'm disappointed.

But you haven't made a cent off it, right? Only way to realize your gains is to sell it.

"And now you can get a device that's even more affordable at $329 in this great new form, and I think a lot of customers are going to be very excited about that," Schiller said.

What he really means is "iPad and iPad mini are price-insensitive. We'll sell as many as we can possibly make, so we might as well charge $30 more."

Latest fast Pure Android, iPad has oversized phone interface too, plastic but feels good in hand

I won't argue that it's one of the best Android tablets out there and pure android is nice in terms of Android. I had the 8GB N7 for a while (though my first had the screen lift issue and my second had horrible screen flicker) and it was okay. I like the magazine implementation much better. But at the end of the day, the OS leaves much to be desired and the lack of good tablet apps was rather disappointing. I used to have an old iPad 1 I had to sell back in college for a few extra $'s, but that definitely got more use than the Nexus 7 ever did, not because it wasn't a good tablet, but I mostly blame the environment, but with that said the N7 is the best for the environment I suppose. Glad I sold mine before the iPad announcements and the 32GB N7 being introduced next week which will make all the current N7 feeling "scammed" only 4 months later.

I had a Nexus 7 that I just sold because I didn't really use it and don't need a tablet. But I agree, way better than iPad mini. Sharper screen, faster, more features, etc. and much cheaper.

The only advantage iPad has is better materials and build quality. Asus' QA sucks.

And, unfortunately, these are some of the reasons the irrelevant iPad mini will FLOP.

Mark my words again: after a flurry of holiday sales, no one will really care about a device that is absolutely redundant/badly priced between a highly-capable, 4-inch Touch/iPhone and the normal iPad.

Yesterday's launch was Apple doing what it does WORST: following the competition instead of setting the bar higher through leadership and innovation. Well, at least the new iMac still gave us a glimpse of TRUE novelty (although still evolutionary) at Apple.

Well, they were selling inferior products for premium prices back then, and we still bought it, because it was Apple. But now they are selling basically the best stuff out there on premium prices, which are nowadays less of a premium of what it was back then even, so no big deal today. And that's why they are on a roll.

What do you mean 'inferior but we still bought it'? They were selling against Compaq.

Please show us any examples of people "bitching" about high Nexus/Kindle prices, would you?

Bloody Nexus isn't even worth $99. Overpriced bit of cheap plastic.

Is that good enough for you?

But actually, when you can get a quality product like the iPad Mini for $329, the Nexus _is_ overpriced.

It is indeed interesting that he is not even trying to defend iPad Mini price on the merits indirectly admitting that Mini is overvalued compared to the competition.

He doesn't. If people buy it then it isn't overpriced.

If $329 was all the cheaper Apple wanted to get with their iPad line, why didn't they just lower the price of the aging iPad 2 by $70? It's absurd to me that $70 is all that separates the iPad 2 from the iPad Mini.

Because they didn't do this to lower the price. They did it to fill a need for their users. Pity they didn't show the key part of that group in their video but I suppose the labor rules for kids was too prohibitive.

I understand the price. $249 cuts into the iPod touch. People are not complaining so much that a 4 inch "tablet" is $300, but cannot fathom a 7.9 inch one at $330

I am. I never thought the iPod Touch was priced well enough for me to justify the purchase, but they still sell boat loads, so you can't blame them for pricing the way they do. If anyone doesn't want it, just don't buy it. If enough people don't buy it, maybe they'll drop the price (Doubt it though) I was surprised that the iPad mini started over $300, I was expecting, the most, $299. I was actually considering purchasing it until I saw the specs and the price. I'll just continue to use my iPhone 5. No retina = no iPad Mini for me.

Pricing on portable devices is all about psychology, which is why it's a huge deal to most consumers when something drops to "under $200" at $199 for instance, even though us geeks will scream "It's still $200!"

For that reason, it just looks a bit clunky and feels strange to have an awkward price of $329. It just feels like they pushed it over a line or not far enough.

$299 looks and feels a lot better. Or even $349, if they threw in some extra RAM to compensate.

And "normal" consumers think about sales tax when they make their buying decisions, which changes the cost of things even more.
