Agreed

No I don't listen to Snell on his own.
My only real exposure to him these days is when he's a guest on another show.

It was on Upgrade, one of the podcasts I'm subscribed to. Cohost is Mike Hurley and this week they had a segment with the iMac product manager. Recently a guy from Apple was on John Sundell's podcast talking about technical stuff.
Of course no hard questions, and nothing about future products.
I don't blame them, having an Apple executive, or even an employee, is free publicity for the podcasts and generate more revenue. For some of those people podcast is one of the primary sources of income.

Yeah, RelayFM literally is all Myke Hurley does in terms of revenue these days I think.
I believe they are doing very well, so it doesn't surprise me they don't want to "rock the boat".

It's so frustrating that almost nobody covers Apple with any scrutiny and is always worried about licking their a** when they do anything even marginally "ok"...and then of course exploding Cupertino semen all over the ceiling when a "camera revision" comes out for iPhones, and it's "life changing" and "world altering" and all the other excessively ridiculous hyperbole..

It's just such unbalanced nauseating fluff -- which is why I don't listen to it anymore.
I get very little value out of such unbalanced opinions.

I don't need people to "rag on Apple", but I do want opinions that are thoughtfully constructive and consider the context of the rest of tech and also have some perspective on what we are talking about here (tech products).

I love cameras and photos too - but "life changing" just reeks of first world lack of perspective on what really matters in "life".

Also..NOBODY is taking Apple to task nearly as much as they should for the revenue extraction and margin BS. They are flat our raping people at this point across many product lines.

Casey Liss quit his "jobby job" so I guess a big part of his revenue come from podcasts these days.

I usually listen to the Verge podcast too, they cover Apple but also other companies and they often talk about privacy, revenue, they recently talked about Facebook's moderators. They are more journalist than podcasters.
John Gruber is another great podcaster, but he's often biased. I love the talk show, but it is usually pro Apple. Rene Richie also covers Apple and he is outspoken, I like him.
I'm open for suggestions, if anyone knows about a good podcast not too biased I'd love to give it a try.

This week Snell interviewed the iMac product manager, did you spot any difference? Did they talk about how much it suck to have an HDD on an iMac in 2019? They mentioned price points etc. but no hard questions.

I thought he did a good effort on what he knew was a losing battle. He acknowledged early Apple never talks about future products, nor in this case, should they. It's not a good idea to go "Hey, the next iMac is AMAZING, so don't buy this one. He pushed about as well as he could on the HDD issue, and he knew it's to meet a price point. Whether Apple *should* meet that price point is another discussion.

All of it is podcast revenue. ATP brings in the bulk of it, and Analogue. The advertised ad rates for ATP are $5500 per week, per ad. Not counting volume discounts, anything they put away in case they don't have a sponsor, bandwidth costs, etc., that still ads up to a nice sum of money.

Incredible..
Kudos to them..

A bunch of yik yakking d*** slapping banter that they'd likely "do for fun" anyhow morphed right into a nice income.

Just another data point of why they won't be rocking the boat w/ Apple anytime soon.

The other thing is, I think the bulk of their listeners are fans of Apple products. I think Marco mentioned he gets criticized when he comes down on Apple by listeners. I listen to ATP most weeks, and Marco going on about the keyboards and SD slots gets old.

I felt the interview Snell did was better, and the questions he asked were appropriate. Colleen was there to talk about the iMac, so the spinner question was a fair question. He knew the answer he'd get, and about how far he could push it, but he asked it.

I’m not a big fan of him worrying about that too much.

If their audience is going to demand that they only say positive things about Apple, that is not an enthusiastic following - it’s a cult.

I think there is a balance point. Criticize Apple where they are due and compliment them where they are due. Most of the podcasts I enjoy focus more on how they do things with the tools. Constant praise is a cult, but constant criticism is the grumpy old men from the Muppets.

With ATP, they are on record several times about the new keyboards and it gets old. When Apple releases new products, it's fair game on the pros and cons, and I thought they captured that well with the iMac discussion in the recent episode.

" Hey Phil how ya doin'
Sorry I couldn't get through
Why don't cha leave yer name, and ya number
And I'll get back to you "

...says everyone on their en-courage-ing calls to get some Applecare.

LOL yes love this track!

I think I'll go back to using the initial intro/chorus as my voicemail once again! 90's was so much fun for that!
