Hi there.
I have a 5s and iPad Air. And can make calls. Although I have to keep the phone in close proximity. Which may be down to my wifi!

However. Something is really bugging me and I am wondering if it should actually be this way!

With the new contacts shortcut ( shows when you minimise windows). If you tap on a contact it shows phone, FaceTime and message symbols on the iPhone.
BUT. On the iPad it only shows message and facetime symbols!
Is this a glitch? Or am I missing something? It seems a bit silly to have to go to your actual contacts!!
Also. I cannot figure out what use the keypad is, when it only shows during a call to a certain contact. Is there no way to dial out without going through the facetime app?

I'm also kind of having problems with this feature. The start of my problem is the fact that from the time my iPhone 5 was brand new it tends to disconnect from Wifi after a few minutes of being locked (it's connected for about 3 minutes and then disconnects). Then as soon as I press the home button or unlock it almost immediately reconnects to wifi. Read and posted on some forums regarding this and was told that it is a feature to save battery on iOS devices..

Before iOS 8 was released it thought to myself that this might be an issue with the call continuity etc.

And I was right, I can make and receive calls within the 3 minutes that it stays connected but after that it says iPhone needs to be connected to same wifi network blah blah.. Again I press the home button or unlock and it works as soon as wifi reconnects.. (This was all with Bluetooth off and since it works maybe it doesn't definitely need Bluetooth ?)

Has anyone got a good solution ?

Guys. I still fail to understand. Does it need wifi or wifi AND bluetooth, and what bluetooth, bluetooth 4? I have imac 2007 which of course has the old bluetooth, i have MBA 2012 which is 4.0. Will Calls and SMS work on the old iMac?

I do not believe it will work with the old iMac…I have seen posts where it will not work with 2011 line, so its safe to assume that the 2007 machine is a no go.

Yeah well, i was hoping that since it needed to be ON the same wifi network (no peer to peer like airdrop or something) it would work. i still fail to understand if it needs bluetooth or not. I'm only talking about calls and texts, handoff doesn't interest me.

From apple.com
"And if your iPhone rings while it’s charging in the bedroom, you can answer the call on your Mac in the living room — they just have to be on the same Wi‑Fi network."
Why wouldn't it work....

Actually, there are several features under what Apple calls Continuity. For the phone calls, you don't need Bluetooth, you just need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. As a result, it does work with old Macs running a beta of Yosemite (although knowing Apple, they are perfectly capable of blocking this voluntarily for the official release).

If you want to know more about what iOS needs and doesn't need for the different features of Continuity, you can watch this. But it's only between iOS devices.

If you have a wifi router with both 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz networks, try on the 2.4 Ghz and see if the issue goes away. I've been seeing some networking issues with 5 Ghz and my iPad Air since iOS 8. Switching to the 2.4 Ghz seems to have fixed it temporarily.

thanks. i actually read a lot of reports and some people say sms worked, but no phone calls with older macs, than someone said both work, but no handoff of course cause the mac has to know when iphone is near. i just need phone calls and texts on my imac, although i use a lot more my mba.. say, 80-20, but still, it'd be nice to have. i always forget my iphone in the pocket or somewhere else, like in the kitchen :)

It works indeed without bluetooth. Just Wifi is enough. When my iphone 4S rings, so do my iPad 2 and iPad Air :)
