The Misty Mountains
I use Waze and Apple Maps regularly. my wife uses Google Maps. I’m used to moving maps While the apps are in use. I’m spending the weekend in Minnesota visiting family, and when I cranked up Waze, no moving map, instead a list of turn directions. I toyed with it a while, then turned to Apple Maps and shockingly, I got a list of turn directions there too, and the same for Google Maps! Usually the map just pops up.

Is there some characteristic about the Twin Cities area, or certain parts of the country, possibility traffic density, number of users, that in relationship to maps for these apps, make them prone to producing a list of directions instead of a moving map? My objective is to figure out if there is a setting that togles the maps on/off...
Insight appreciated. :)

That's weird. The only time I see my phone only display turn by turn directions is when the map is being displayed on my car via CarPlay.

The rental car has Car Play in it! A pop up asked if we wanted to use it, and I said no, but... is there an easy way to turn off Car Play? One solution might be to not plug the phone in, but I try to keep it charged as GPS seems to drain the phone.

Yes! Under ScreenTime in the Settings app there's an "Allowed Apps" section and you can turn it off there.

@MisterSavage thanks for your help! I found sound settings in the car and turned off Car Play. Now I’m getting a map on my iPhone when in the car. :) I did not experiment, but would have turning off blue tooth, been a possible solution?

I don't think so because Bluetooth is wireless and the wired connection is what was getting you.
