I don't have a mac, I'm asking for a friend. But her Macbook's facetime camera says it can record 720p (1280x720)

But the video outputed from her Photo Booth app is only 720x480.

Any idea why this is? What can be done to fix it.

Is this simply a MacBook or MacBook Air/Pro? None of the MacBooks, not even the new Retina ones, can record in HD using the built-in camera. It's a very strange limitation for new MacBooks to have in 2016.

If it's a recent MacBook Air/Pro 720p should be possible. I'm not very experienced with Photo Booth though.

Unless it is a Retina MacBook (slim one with the USB C port) then it may be a limitation of Photo booth. I would recommend using QuickTime to record video from the webcam though, much better work flow and would result in a higher quality video file I would imagine. Just open QuickTime then go File -> New Move Recording.
