Ok I just figured it out. Go to a picture with a watermark in the top right that looks like a square with a star. Then go to edit and then crop and then you zoom in with your fingers and you can see the wide angle version quickly after.

I do that and nothing shows up. Can you try doing it with a QuickTake video and see if it works?

No matter what I do, I can't seem to get this feature to work despite it being turned on in the settings. Especially for QuickTake video. Does anyone know how to definitively trigger it? It seems like a really innovate feature that unfortunately is nearly impossible to make work

Here is Apple's support page for the feature in case you're wondering what this feature is: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/capture-content-outside-the-camera-frame-iph8692d3298/ios

I don't know if you're holding the iPhone right or not. Make sure all 3 cameras are facing towards you.

Yeah, I’ve just come to the conclusion that this feature is useless in current form. No telling if a photo will have it or not. At least I don’t have to feel bad switching to Most Compatible anymore.

My best guess is that it wasn’t working on photos indoors because the exposure on the super wide angle was too dark in comparison.

Honestly, I’d rather see a mode where every photo was taken with all 3 lenses for 30 days, allowing you to switch in the edit until then.

Or even better, now that portrait mode is better on non-humans, take both the standard photo and depth data to switch to portrait later.

I’m just never going to switch to portrait mode on an important photo because I’m still getting some wonky edges sometimes. But if a photo I already took happened to look good, that would be a win.
You know that you could take just everything in portrait mode and then later turn the blur off, right?;)

so what does the functionality do?
Actually today it worked for the first time for me, in brightest daylight. I took a pic of a building and then a tiny icon appeared in the top right corner of the picture later. Was wondering what that was supposed to be, until I went into the crop settings and saw the picture automatically getting straightened out. And while doing this, the app was bringing in image information that I didnt capture on purpose. It was quite impressive!!
