This makes me very sad: it is way too big. No way do I want to try to stuff that in my pocket or hold it in one hand or make a phone call with it.

I so hope that Apple, while catering to the hopefully temporary "give me a giant phone" insanity out there offers us an alternative top of the line model the size of a 4S or 5S.

They really do need a iPhone nano if they are going to do a monster like this.
More to the point if they are going to do a big phone why not get serious about it and do close to 6 inch so that is has workable two hand use.

Man you must little baby hands or something. My 4.7" phone fits in my pocket just fine and I can reach all areas of the screen.

Get over it.

I hate all of you who want a bigger iPhone. Apple is just giving the customer what it wants and it seems everyone wants a bigger phone these days and I hate you all. I like being able to put mine in my pocket. You all can suck it! Suck it hard!

If the iPhone does get larger some might...;)

how the hell are developers going to support this many layouts?
auto layout constraints are a headache to implement.

As an iphone developer for over 5 years, I can tell you that what you just said couldn't be further from the truth. Furthermore, with the new APIs that were released with the iphone 5, it is actually extremely easy

Yep, agreed. People really don't research properly (unless hearsay is "research")

'This many'? As of this fall, if rumors are correct, we'll have:

- iPhone 5C/5S resolution (1136 x 640)
- iPhone 6 4.7" (resolution still unknown, hopefully as rumoured 1920 x 1080) [also rumoured: 1600 x 900]
- iPhone 6 5.5" (resolution still unknown, hopefully as rumoured 2560 x 1440) [also rumoured: 1920 x 1080]

So, three resolutions - that's very much do-able. All three have the same 16:9 aspect ratio.
When the iPhone 4S was introduced, developers also had to take care of three resolutions - with two different aspect ratios!

Considering the iPad and iPad Mini share the same resolution at a much bigger difference, I think it's pretty likely the 5.5" and the 4.7" will share the same resolution since creating that many assets would seem infuriating. Especially since the original concern about the introduction of a 4" screen was how long it'd take developers to update for it.

I don't find those models so similar, tbh

I think there are differences

Very minor differences of the same design, IMO. I remember how many people here were disappointed when Steve announced the 4S since they were expecting a totally new design. Obviously the disappointment didn't stop anyone from buying the 4S or anything that came after it. Well over a year ago there was a concept of an iPhone with a curved back and a few other design tweaks that I personally liked, it had a lot of potential.

Well, do you realize this matter is highly subjective, right ?
I absolutely prefer a flat back on a mobile, versus a rounded one.
I like the way Apple improved iPhone design over the time without losing the "family feeling" of iPhone 4.

Remember what I said: the 4.7" iPhone 6 model will look like a scaled up iPhone 5C, though of course the case color will be white, slate grey and "champagne" gold.

From Pogue's review of the Samsung Galaxy 5:
David Pogue said:
The 5.1-inch screen is too big to operate with the hand that’s holding it, unless your thumb can stretch like Mrs. Incredible’s. But Samsung has a clever, if weird, fix for this: Among the Galaxy’s 732,852 features is one called “One-Handed Operation,” whose function is to shrink the screen so that you can reach all of it with your thumb. It leaves empty black areas around the shrunken image. Clever! But if you wanted a smaller screen, why would you have bought a big phone?)
Please, Apple step of the ledge of Android absurdity. Leave bad design to the bad designers and consumers with no taste.

Podcasts, texts, and games....sounds like something you can do on your 9.7" iPad (with unlimited LTE). Get yourself a feature phone and use your iPad for everything else.

Problem Solved. Money Saved. Complaints Eradicated.
Yeah, and that feature phone has a camera as good as the iPhone for pictures and video with 64GB storage and Contacts integration with my iPad? FaceTime Audio? Skype? Yeah, i didn't think so.

Also the top time I listen to podcasts is when walking the dog, and then I don't have my messenger bag/iPad with me. I have the ideal setup now -- please save me the suggestions.

So if you have the "ideal setup" now, why do you need an iPhone 6 again? Seems like all of your problems go away if you just keep what you have.

Far too much space between icons. FAR too much. However, at least this isn't one of those photos where the person imagines there'll be FIVE icons per row; no chance.
There will definitely be no increase in rows, because they would have done that with the iPad.
It may look like there's too much space, but again, look at the iPad. The 4.7" screen will be the same density, so it makes sense to keep the same size of icons and increase spacing for a more visible wallpaper. The 5.5" version will have the same relative spacing, but obviously will be stretched larger in 1080p. It will be like the iPad Retina vs. iPad mini
If they kept the original spacing of the 5s icons and just stretched it larger, the phone would look too much like the 5s and it would not be obvious that there was a screen size change without actually holding a 6 in person

My goal was to keep it from looking like this above. The icons look horrible because the space from the edge of the display doesn't match the space between icons. There's too little buffer between icons and the edge, and then there's no physical bezel there either.

I don't. I will however need a 6S when my current contract is up -- to upgrade to 128GB and get the better camera and CPU.

don't tell me you're using Autolayout.

People that are complaining that the new iPhone won't fit in their pockets are crazy. Here's a quick Photoshop. It's not that much bigger... I think everyone's pockets can accommodate another 1/2" to 3/4" just fine.

This!

And it's quite amusing reading all these people get so upset over these so called leaks. You should be ashamed of yourselves if you believe this is what Apple is making for a 4.7" iPhone.

My take is the 4.7" device is the iPhone 6. However, the 5.5" device is somewhere between an iPod Touch an an iPad Mini. That is, this device will be mostly a tablet / media player with cell phone communication secondary.

Here are some guesses for the 5.5" device name.

iPod Touch Max
iPod Touch Air
iPad Micro
iPad Express
iPad Go

I love my Iphone 5S. The only "mistakes" I make with it are typing. I rarely type a long message without a couple of mistakes. Maybe if the Iphone 6 is a little wider, it would prevent this. A little wider is okay, but taller would be grotesque.
