I think these pictures are leaked by Apple itself on purpose.
All the rumors hurt Apple in some way. In my opinion, Apple uses the rumors community for its purposes by sending false leaks.

This is what Tim Cook meant with double down on secrecy.

But this looks like clear plastic. Those leaks do not.

The bottom pieces you see in the first post will house the accessories (ear pods, lightning cable, and wall charger) and the paperwork.

There will be a clear casing on top (like the iPod picture) to show the color of each phone.

I believe this looks like the real thing but it's odd that they are all thrown one over the other like that, makes a lot of scratches probably.

The packaging and name seem like something Apple could do.

Probably rejected cases. Not all will make the cut.

The leaked part is the back half of the shell. Maybe they're going with solid plastic instead of a clear outer layer for the back half this time? Seems like the same general idea though.

They just made your ears bleed because they were 4 times too big for the ears.

Had to get a pair of speakers a couple days after I purchased my first iPod.

And they completely fall out of my ears. Don't stay in at all. Not even for a second. So there you go. Making a one-size-fits-all earbud is impossible.

Kind of interesting it's called the 5C.

We are expecting a 5S though that's not a given.

So we will have a 5S and a 5C.

But what happens after that? Will we have an iPhone 6 and 6C and a then 6S and another 6C?

Maybe it should be called the iPhone 5SC

Everything that defined Apple - design and (build) quality - has now gone down the drain with these cheap knock-off looking, plastic iPhones. I don't like the direction Apple is heading

So the 3G and 3GS were cheap knock off iPhones?

At this point I don't think there's any denying it anymore. The iPhone Color is coming.

I still don't understand what's going on with pricing. The typical pricing is $199, $99, $0 and high-end, mid, low-end respectively. If they price the iPhone 5C at the low-end then what happens next year when they shift the iPhones down the tier and discontinue the low-end model? And if the reports of Apple only offering 2 iPhones and discontinuing manufacturing the iPhone 5 then wouldn't it make more sense to price the iPhone 5 at $0 instead of the iPhone Color?

The name 5C would be more than fine. Apple has used the 'C' suffix on other products and it's a nice simple convention to separate the the model variants (5, 5C, 5S).

No matter what letter is used (if any...), someone would come up with some derogatory (and mostly unfunny) description that used the same letter.

It would not make sense to keep making the 5 and sell it at the 0 subsidized price point, because the 5 is expensive to make. The CNC machining, materials, and inlays are far more costly than injection molded plastic. To sell the 5 at a low price would hurt margins.

Better to use existing expensive tooling for the high end 5S.

I guess it's true this is happening. How are folks weighing the decision between the two devices? With an upgrade coming sometime around the release, I'm probably willing to go either way.

That's why samsung has 3 different size buds included with every phone that fit over the ear piece to make it comfortable for a wider audience.

An entirely plastic box with each iPhone? Is that cost effective? Or environmental?

Plastic is cheap and recyclable.
And are you SERIOUSLY fretting about a few grams of plastic packaging on a product bought every two years(by most customers)?Take a stroll through your local grocery or department store and you'll have a nervous breakdown!
