The last few years we have seen leaks just before the announcement and they have been pretty accurate.

So I am PRETTY sure this is the real deal, those antenna breaks - going to take some time getting use to but I need to get rid of my 4S, multitasking is awful on it now.

This thread is basically a bookmarkable example of why banning silly gifs, flashy animations and images in posts would be such a positive move for MacRumors (IMHO of course).

Most of the posts on the first page with images and gifs got deleted so they basically are...

God lighten up MacRumors.

All of that is great but has little to do with Steve Jobs saying no one is going to buy a big phone and that you can't even get your hands round them, and that was back when the "big" phones were only 4.3-4.5 inches.

Did hands grow?

One thing is making a big phone because you want and you can. The other thing is being unable to make a smaller high end device with the best possible SoC and good battery life.

That's what happened in the Android world, and still does. Only Sony managed to do it and it was very recently.

Those previous big phones were a pile of crap full of compromises. However, today, no one will look at something so nice as the G3 and see compromises, there. The time has come.

Batteries life will last a lot, great screens and all high end devices besides the G3 and the S5 won't throttle down due to heat. Apps are also ready for those screens. No one will have to use a note 3 to run apps that were made thinking on devices like the xperia x10 mini pro.

While all this happened, Apple was only selling more and more high end devices, and still growing. With bigger iPhones, they will totally annihilate everybody that sells high end devices.

Let's just hope that they keep up-to-date 4" devices for those that want then, or sell the 5s for free/400 of contract and bump the storage on the other devices!

When it's released you can see people complaining it's not 1080p when most people don't even know the other dimension or the PPI involved in a 5.5 inch screen and why you literally are unable to perceive a difference.

An analyst in me might possibly believe that Apple might allegedly release a possible but unconfirmed 5.5" iPhone. Other analysts in me might possibly not give a rat's a$$ about a possible desire to buy an allegedly iPhone. :p

What about...

...those of us who like the existing size of the iPhone 5 when the only new phones debuted are 4.7" and 5.5", what are we left to purchase as an upgrade? What happened to the Apple that would release products not solely based on what everyone else is releasing and consumers think they need?

Well when I landed on this thread this morning, the thread was almost unreadable with all the flashy animated images everywhere dotted between posts. It was like landing on a 90s webpage with those annoying CLICK HERE banners flashing at you at a ludicrous seizure inducing speed.

Both will be larger than any other 4.7 and 5.5, that bothers me a lot

Ah don't worry about height and width. As good ol' Jonny designed it razor thin (in fact, thin enough to not hold one of those annoying big batterys all those pesky consumers would love to see in their iPones), it will be able to effortless cut holes in pockets (and human flesh if necessary) to fit anyones pants without hassle...thinking about it...does bathing the phone in ones own blood count as warranty voiding exposure to liquid???
Ah, the questions never stop

Well, you think you need a 4" phone, so I would say Apple is holding pretty true to its ways.

Most interesting thing to me if the 5.5" does exist is Apple's justification for going that big after all the marketing around the iPhone 5 and 5s was focused on how great it is for one handed use.

They'll do nothing but drop "one-handed use" from the marketing bullet list and replace it with some benefit(s) associated with the bigger screens. Apple flip flops often- sometimes dramatically- and every time they just carry on as if they never took some stance that conflicts with the new view supporting what they want to sell now.

I, for one, think 5.5 inches is a rediculous size for a phone.

Then you're not who they are targeting with it. And I would bet large that you find it ridiculous because you are accustomed to iPhones at 4". However, there is a big world of people out there that buy Android smart phones at sizes up to and exceeding 6". To some of them, 5.5" may seem small and 4.7" may seem "too small". I think THAT's the primary target of a 5.5" iPhone… filling an obvious market demand while also directly attacking the most tangible differentiator for Samsung smart phones with the added pull of iOS.

Why is one handed use crap? It's high on a lot of people's list of priorities when looking for a phone for good reason... It's important and super useful.

It's high on a lot of people's list because Apple spun it hard to help "us" choose smallish 3.5" and then 4" screens over increasingly popular screens bigger than 4". It's like "thinner", another benefit(?) that Apple has made "us" believe is some hugely important thing. Do "we" really find the 5s too thick? Did we really find the 4 too thick?

Assuming these rumors are true, Apple will likely just drop the "one-handed use" bullet from their marketing spin and this crowd will drop that "priority" right with them. Every time Apple flip flops on something, it's the same: this crowd arguing passionately with the Apple spin before the flip flop and then this crowd arguing with the change afterwards. This will be no different.

In fact, you can see it in the rumors themselves. Go back to before there were any rumors of a bigger-screen iPhone and see post after post ripping into anything over 4" as "abominations", "stupid", "99.9% of people don't want…".

Then look at early rumors of bigger screen iPhones. Majority attack the idea as "abominations", etc.

Then the rumors piled up and it appeared- and now appears- increasingly likely that Apple is going bigger screen. Where's all that "abominations", "stupid", "99.9%…" now? It's been replaced by what seems like about 2/3 being ready to buy a 4.7" and the rest being ready to buy a 5.5".

All of that is great but has little to do with Steve Jobs saying no one is going to buy a big phone and that you can't even get your hands round them, and that was back when the "big" phones were only 4.3-4.5 inches. Did hands grow?

No, the more profitable opportunity shifted to bigger size screens. Apple said so in the Samsung trial. Jobs was a notorious flip flopper. For example, see: http://www.techlicious.com/blog/5-big-flip-flops-from-apple/ and http://www.phonearena.com/news/Tim-Cook-says-Steve-Jobs-taught-him-about-flip-flopping_id30702 Cook says "He (Jobs) would flip on something so fast that you would forget that he was the one taking the 180 degree polar [opposite] position the day before. I saw it daily."

...those of us who like the existing size of the iPhone 5 when the only new phones debuted are 4.7" and 5.5", what are we left to purchase as an upgrade? What happened to the Apple that would release products not solely based on what everyone else is releasing and consumers think they need?

Unfortunately, it appears you go to the 4.7" and like it. There seems to be no rumors of new guts going behind a new iPhone 6 at 4". Personally, I think Apple should also make a 6 with a 4" screen just for that market too but again, I think the profits have shifted to bigger screens such that even Apple is ready to abandon the previously spun, "perfect" size of 4". OR, you can keep using a 5s, 5c or 4 and hope that the lack of interest in bigger screen iPhones by a big segment who only want 4" or less makes Apple rethink this shift such that they decide to resurrect a 4" size too.

If you are influenced by the crowd here, should Apple abandon 4", it will only be a flash of time thereafter before the herd starts putting down everything less than 4.7" as "old", "puny", "how did we ever get by with" and on and on. This crowd only needs Apple to validate the rumors and it will jump right on the bandwagon of the new doctrine. Take out the now inapplicable marketing bullets like "one handed use" and others. Replace then with the new bullets Apple will spin in answer to why 4.7" and 5.5". Then, business as usual. We've seen this many times before...

Upon the iPad 1 launch "why would anyone need a front facing camera in an iPad", "why would someone want to video chat on an iPad?", "I wouldn't want people looking up my nose while I tried to video chat", "stability", etc.

Then Apple launches iPad 2 with FaceTime as the primary, tangible new thing: "FaceTime is terrific… shut up and take my money", "can't wait to FaceTime on the iPad 2"

Prior to :apple:TV 3 with 1080p:
"720p is good enough", "1080p is a gimmick", "the chart", "until the whole internet is capable of 1080p video being downloaded from iTunes", "storage", "I can't see the difference" (so you can't either), blah, blah, blah.

Then Apple rolls out :apple:TV3:
All that former bashing and spinning evaporated.

Prior to bigger screen iPhones rumors:
"Steve jobs said…", "3.5 is perfect" and "everything bigger is an abomination", "stupid", etc

Rumors of a 4" screen:
"Abomination", "Apple would never", "fragmentation", "stupid", "99% don't want", "Steve Jobs said", "one-handed use", "pocketability", "need bigger pants pockets" blah blah blah

Early Rumors of a 4.7" and 5.5":
"Abomination", "Apple would never", "fragmentation", "stupid", "99% don't want", "one-handed use", "pocketability", "need bigger pants pockets" blah blah blah

Later rumors of a 4.7" and 5.5":
"It's kind of growing on me", "4.7" will be OK but 5.5" is crazy", "I can't wait for the 4.7", "one-handed use" (apparently we all found some pants with bigger pockets?)

Apple announces 4.7" and 5.5" (soon):
"Shut up and take my money", "now that I've actually seen them…", "how did we ever get by with those puny screens". Pocketability, one-handed use, etc will just evaporate like no one ever said anything about those issues and hardly anyone will call the new iPhones abominations, stupid, etc.

And that .1% will apparently be enough to buy 150-250 million iPhones in the next year or so.

Shortly thereafter: cue 1000 "which one should I get?" threads.

Also - if I go 5.5" I'll have to seriously consider selling my iPad Air since the functionality of the two devices will be too redundant to justify owning and managing both.

On my interest scale, that’s somewhere under the width of the plastic band used to secure the earbuds ... :D Seriously, why even spend any cycles worrying about that: usage models change, market spaces require adaptation, etc. :)

Your second point is very interesting as I think that is going to be how tablet marketshare is squeezed down. Larger, just-as-capable phones from one end, thinner, more capable laptops from the other. I had actually considered an iPad Mini 2 to replace our 4th Gen, but I think it’ll wind up being an Air 2 to have a little more differentiation in the devices (though it’s mostly for our little girl).

As much as I love my iP5, I was seriously considering the Note 4 vs. a 4.7" iP6 when my upgrade hits next month. I love the hardware and software of my iPhone (much better than any Droid I've ever owned or played with), but screen size is going to be the #1 factor for me this time around, and I really hadn't planned on buying a phone with anything less than 5" of screen real estate. Therefore I had really ruled out a 4.7" iP6. A 5.5" version, however, will likely keep me in the fold, as long as it is released this fall and not delayed until winter or next spring.

Come on Apple, work your magic.

Anyone thinking of getting both and selling the one they don't want to keep? I theoretically want the 5.5, but for daily usage the 4.7 may be the one I really prefer.

you know you could buy both and return one within the 2 weeks or whatever the return policy is right? 14 days is more than enough time with two phones to decide which one you want to keep. Ill probably be doing this.

There's no way this is legit! There is no way Apple would ever release a device that ugly with those thick bands! I will not be purchasing this phone if that's what it looks like! It's like, "geez Apple, can't you get by the laws of physics and just eliminate the bands all together?" Or go back to an all-plastic phone again, that way I don't have to look at the ugly bands on my phone even if it's going to live in a case anyway

[/s]

you know you could just get the black phone right? the bands are also black. If the back looks like this ill be fine with that. http://static.knowyourmobile.com/sites/knowyourmobilecom/files/styles/gallery_wide/public/iphone_6_black.jpg?itok=tPPGxZ7i

No, but he was wrong, obviously.

Today the "phone" in smartphone is a very small part of what people look for in such device. For the other tasks, a bigger screen is a great improvement.

Yes, I believe that Apple is 1 or 2 years late to this market. They are better then ever, better than everybody else, but they could be even better today.

God, where is 1080p with his dose of denial when you need to rub his nose in it?

Give him some credit, the battery leak last week came out and he DID admit the 5.5" finally had some credibility in his eyes. At least he didn't deny it after evidence came out.
