Wow, big 4 battery packs. Now we're talking! I bet that AIR will last at least 24 hours without charge. Then next year they will have the pack last 40 hours. :p

I wonder why they didn't layout the batteries horizontally even.
Maybe to center some of the batteries so that the weight of the notebook can be balanced evenly?

I think I want to get this over my current Alienware M11x, but was wondering if it will be more powerful than the current MBA version C or about as useful as the ipad with a bluetooth keyboard?

It is like people here don't understand the term prototype. Seriously a pic from April could simply be one of dozens of prototypes Apple has built.

They understand the term prototype as well as eBay sellers understand the term mint. This could be something they were designing to replace the 13" MacBook Air but scrapped in favor of the 11" model or maybe they will introduce both. Either way it is a prototype and many things can change in the final product. At the very least the logic board and battery would be cleaned up and finalized for mass production.

Oh, and there are not two USB ports in that picture.

Might have something to do with the tapered Edge design of the MBA...

The batteries might not fit otherwise. But I'm just guessing although it makes sense to me

Data is the most important thing in computing. If these built-in SSD notebooks are stolen, good luck. What's worst is your repairman steals your data when you send in for repairs. User removable SSD HDD is my preference. Well, there's good and bad too. Bad is due to my carelessness. Good is it counters most of the bad points of built-in SSD.

People can steal data off of traditional, removable hard drives the same way. If someone steals your notebook, it doesn't matter what kind of hard drive the data was on, it's stolen, it makes no difference.

This is why you have to back up your data, so you don't lose it. This is true even if you have removable hard drives. You're not going to remove the hard drive and hide it under your bed each time you leave the house, are you?

You KNOW IT !!.... I'll beat you to the shopping cart purchase !

This is Apple.
There is no way this will come in under $1k. We won't get the expected speed, RAM nor storage. Yet we'll all bitch & moan as we place our orders. And then bitch & moan about our deliveries not shipping as fast as we like. Then praise the little wonder as we unbox and begin using. Then bitch & moan when a spec bump follows in 6 months.
Yep, sounds like a typical Apple release. :)

I'm actually in the market for an Air: something more substantial than an iPad (Aka: runs OS X), while maintaining the iPad's perfect portability. Very much looking forward to next week.

HEAT Dissipation !

If you look at the dimensions of an HDD and an SSD they don't line up.
So, definitely they're all batteries.

Are you drunk!?

Based on our own professional squinting ability, there are USB plugs on the left and right sides, Mini DisplayPort and an SD card reader on the left, and a power plug on the right.

*LOL*

On the left you see the mini-DisplayPort and one USB 2.0 interface. On the right you see the Gigabit-Ethernet and the power supply interfaces. There is no second USB interface and no card-reader.

The final design looks much better than this early prototype, which is based on the MBP 13".

Its sad that anyone would ever use 3 USB ports at once on a mobile device.

recharge iPhone
load images from CF card
copy images to USB HDD

Ugh, C'mon, please do your research first. That was a VERY early prototype. They won't waste high end memory on prototypes....
Even prototypes are no joke to Apple. it's one of the things that highlight how obsessed they can be with the little details.

Truly inspiring...

So I take it you bumped into Phil Schiller in the supermarket this morning and got chatting…? Or was it Tim Cook at the hairdressers?

Has anyone noticed that the photo of the screen isn't glossy? So looks like they're keeping the same anti-glare display...

I'm Pretty sure the MacBook Air has always had a glossy screen. It's just not covered by a thick sheet of glass. I think you have to go back to the PPC era to when Apple shipped matte screens as standard. The first plastic MacBooks were glossy.

The Powerbook 12" is without any doubt the best notebook i had in my life. The keyboard is better than the new design introduced with the macbook white.

What i wanted in Macbook Air:
Matte 12" (4:3) 1280x1024 (SXGA) or 11.6" Screen 1366x768 (WSXGA).
Intel Core 2 Duo - SU9600
Intel 4500MHD
Support Max 8 GB ram
Ethernet Port
Wifi-n
2 USB Ports
Bluetooth

Storage:
1.8" 320 GB HDD or 1.8" SSD 128 GB.

10 hour battery
Max weight: 1.2 Kg / 2.65 pounds

699$ for HDD 899$ SSD

For example i bought 2 months ago, an Acer 1810TZ for 399 € and it's a great computer, except for the trackpad. It's not my PB 12" keyboard but it's better than 80% of industry keyboards i have tried. Acer could made it much better if they had pushed the keyboard a little closer to the screen, and placed a bigger trackpad. this baby with a ssd is FAST!

Everyone, remember to ask for TRIM support at the feedback page of mac os x.

Will Apple finally start providing USB3?

Amen to the second USB port. Can't wait to see the update. It's long overdue! :)

Any speculation if those ports will be USB3? Since this is completely re-engineered, I fondly hope that they upgraded the USB chips.

Also, will the USB ports provide sufficient current to provide full power to an iPad?

Why would you charge an ipad through a computer?

Even IF your speculations are correct, it won't be sold for less than $1300, I can assure you. The current gen isn't, why should the new one be? Plus, Intel IGP with C2D? Doesn't exist I'm afraid.

Long overdue... If this actully happens (size and price drop) it will be a difficult choice between this and an iPad.

The trackpad button needs some room to travel. Rather then make the battery 1 mm thinner, they moved it out of the way a centimeter.

Why not? Use the iPad for a couple of days and plug it for syncing and charging into your laptop. The point is if you connect your iPad for syncing purposes to your computer anyway, why not leave it plugged in for a little while longer.
