Eastern black swallowtail I was referring to yesterday. Dill is one of the caterpillar’s favorite foods.
the markings on yours and mine are different. mine is the same species as the eastern yellow swallowtail but the females are dimorphic, so can present as yellow or darker way like in my photo.
A Green Heron capturing a meal and I posted the most interesting on today. I will post another one in September POTD tomorrow. I can't believe tomorrow is September.
I still have some seeds from similar that I gathered in '09 on a trip to the mountains East of San Diego.
I have spent the past eight years obsessing over not knowing what species this is.

One of the progeny pupated in my enclosure three weeks ago, and emerged on Monday.
We were all fortunate that it emerged so soon, and fortunate that we were able to hold a concrete example to appreciate the idea that not all life keeps living.
The newly-emerged butterfly did not survive the day.
Its moments in time were splendid!
