Qantas B767 at warp speed? Well, it was landing actually and not going that fast. The shutter speed makes it seem fast though. I was quite pleased with this photo.

I've been trying to do the same type of photo with Cathay Pacific's new B747-8F that flies into Sydney once or twice a week, but the timing and light are never right. Usually it leaves too early and the light is too bright - or it doesn't turn up at all.
You must live near an airport, right?

That's got to be one of the most interesting shots I've seen from you. Right up with your Cloud Castle. Don't tell me that the Sunny Side of the Alps also has the Gateway to Hell. So what are we looking at and how did you manage to fool us?

Dale

Many thanks, Dale. No, this site is nowhere near the Alps. It's Pfeiffer Beach at Big Sur, California. The beach has a famous archway in one of its rocks, through which the sun shines in a spectacular beam during the weeks near the winter solstice. It's one of those locations of the sort that I typically avoid because I'm rather jaded from having seen too many photos of it. I happened to be in the neighborhood at the right time, however, so I decided to make a very last-minute exception. The stereotypical shot of this phenomenon is taken with a long focal length and way off to the right, which emphasizes the light rays being lit up by ocean spray. I wanted to do something a bit different, so I got close and positioned myself nearer to the center. I have several other photos from this set that do exhibit the light rays and some beautiful back-lit splashes in the foreground. Maybe I'll post those too eventually, but they're closer to the gazillion other photos out in cyberspace, so maybe I'll just keep them to myself.

At any rate, it's a magnificent phenomenon to witness, so I'm glad I broke my own 'rule' and went for this location. :)

[Edit: by the way, which one is the "Cloud Castle"? :)]

Thanks for all the info. Mt. Rainier is like that. It has been photographed so much that it's hard to be original with it.

The photo I referenced is Atlantis in your Gone portfolio.

Oh, OK. Well...fog, not clouds...and a village, not a castle...but hey, who's counting?! :p At any rate, glad you like. :)

And yeah, Rainier photos abound on the internet, but it's incredible how many of them are extraordinarily good. That mountain is remarkably photogenic.

Glow worms in an abandoned railway line tunnel. Very spooky late at night...

Very cool! I've never seen anything like that, not even in a photo. Nice find!

[Ack. It looks like I don't have the TIMG plug-in yet on my new computer. Will have to fix that!]

Amtrak Station. Sumner Washington.
Shot at 17mm with my Tokins 12-24. I didn't like the wide angle effect so I PhotoShopped it out

I really like this shot. Took me awhile to find the couple though. Looks like Labrador, where I grew up. Cold!

Mine for today: More from the first ice fishing trip of 2012.

Thanks BarryJ. Skidoo fan, huh? Nice sleds, don't know about their quads though. :)
