Good to hear that you enjoyed yourself in the desert Phrasikleia. The areas I visited had an incredible beauty that I found very appealing. For me, the morning light was good but I was a bit foggy. Mid to late afternoon was great.
Mine for today...the fountain at the Bellagio in action.
Nice textures in that one.
I envy you that good desert light you described! I saw it only once on my trip, the very first day of shooting. A beautiful, syrupy warm light was raking across this plateau I found, making the colors of the rocks absolutely radiant, and bringing out the most amazing micro-detail in the textures. A prominent outcropping in the distance was getting beamed with light and was lit up like a beacon. It was magnificent

POOF!
it wasn't. As soon as I got my tripod set up and placed the camera on it, someone turned out the lights. I thought, OK, it's just a passing cloud, and the sun will find another opening soon. I took a couple of test shots for focus, and I waited. And I waited. And I waited some more. I left the tripod standing there and went hiking around to look for future compositions, ready to sprint back to the tripod if the light should return. But it didn't. The magical sunlight was done for the day, and I had missed it by a minute at most. Worse still, the wonderful clouds hanging in the sky that evening were the last I saw for a week. So it goes.
There's been a few selfies posted here over the last month or so, here's mine. It's interesting how you have a picture of someone in your mind from reading their posts here and in reality they are nothing like you imagined! acearchie, Keleko, Phrasikleia, VirtualRain, all completely different to what I had conjured in my minds eye.
I had to do this as an exercise for a photography group, it was the most daunting picture I've taken thus far! Just using a simple 5500K lamp off to one side and slightly in front. I played with a remote flash for it using a small soft box, but this came out better.
It's funny that a photo of me would come as much of a surprise since my avatar here is a picture of me.

I've actually had the opposite reaction when I've seen photos of forum members, usually along the lines of, "Yep, that fits." Your self portrait captures a nice sense of drama, by the way.
Here's another photo from my archives, a sunrise from the end of the summer. I've been shooting this lake for years now, and it looks completely different each time I go there. It keeps throwing me curve balls that prevent me from capturing it according to my plans. I always come away with photos that are quite different from what I had in mind. On this particular visit, the lake's shoreline had receded a full meter from where it was just one week earlier, and the composition I had so carefully scouted a week before was gone. Fortunately, I made this discovery the evening before this sunrise and was able to scout out a "Plan B" for the next morning.
