I really need to get an ND filter before I try this again. Stopping down the lens to its smallest f/32 and using ISO 100 definitely isn't the ideal solution, especially when I wanted even more exposure time.

I think that you've got it almost perfect there - the waterfall looks dreamy and wispy; however, I do partially agree with Phrasikleia - if you crop the middle, all it would be is a plain white shape, with no texture. I think less would be better.

It's definitely a good idea to get the ND so you can avoid stopping down past the point of noticeable diffraction, but why would you have wanted an even longer exposure in this case? You've already lost all detail in much of the waterfall, giving you a big, white 'hole' instead of some nice water texture. It's usually best not to obliterate the texture in the water. Waterfalls look good with a bit of motion blur, but not so much that you lose all highlight detail.

Point taken. I see where you are coming from. I guess I had tunnel vision and was focusing on the right most part and noticed how thin it was and was wishing it would be better filled out. In doing this, I totally ignored the massive white blob in the center.

Thank you both for the advice. For todays picture I grabbed one of the other shots from that set with a faster shutter speed and tried to tweak it, paying close attention not to blow out any of the water. I think this one is a little better. I'll include the other shot from yesterday as a thumbnail for reference. Time to start researching filters.

What program are you using for your pictures-Aperture, LR, PS?? You can export them in a smaller size. My entry (two posts up) was shot RAW and exported in Aperture at 1/2 the original JPEG size to my desktop first. Hope this helps.

Yes, definitely better, IMO.

This is the sequence you need to follow: Right click on photo>Export Version>Export Preset> on drop down menu select "JPEG-50% Original Size">then click on "Export Versions" on the bottom right hand side of the panel. You should have already selected the Desktop from the top half of the page. It does take time for the exported version to be process (you will see the spinning wheel at the bottom of the panel).

If you have done that and your photo is still >2MB, then you may need to create your own custom JPEG for this site. Go to this thread to see how to do it:

Lee Big Stopper.

Or, a little bit cheaper, Cokin Z-PRO.
Don't go for anything smaller than 100mm filters (the Cokin Z-PRO size) because you will get vignetting at ultra wide focal lengths ... especially when stacking. Very often you will want to use a CPL with an ND-Grad and maybe even a 3-stop ND.
