Yep, when I took that image they were just starting to collect and mill the old tailings pile. Golden Cycle was very generous in allowing me free rein to photograph as long as I stayed well back from any work they were doing. Not surprised that it is now largely open pit. Bet the current owners would probably not be quite so obliging.I believe it is around here.
In the mid '80's I was pretty familiar with the area but that was before the open pit started operations. Holy smokes, the area certainly has changed in the the last 40 years. The area where the pit is was a mishmash of the remnants of underground mines. There was a small surface operation where you could see the drifts that had been exposed from the removal of material.
Oh dear god! That takes me back… 🤣View attachment 2494766
Les Espaces d'Abraxas: "a unique combination of the romantic sublime and totalitarian awe"
1/200s 24mm @ f/8
Agreed about aging badly; nearly my first reaction too. Aging badly physically and stylistically. Sent that photo and a few others to some friends who were also studying architecture as I was dans la France in the late 80s; we remembered the celebration of Bofill was tricky and suspect.Oh dear god! That takes me back… 🤣
I started my Architecture degree the year this was completed.
Riccardo Bofill was one of the hot to trot guys… so many of these things have aged so badly.
Mind you, Tschumi's Follies are still awesome. 🙂
