It helps with shots like this one if a single flower is tack sharp, at least at its critical point of interest (usually the stamen), and the other is quite out of focus. That way the out-of-focus flower echoes the sharp one without competing with it. In this shot, nothing is critically sharp, both flowers are uniformly blurry, and the two compete with each other for attention.
 
I've not posted in a very long time, but trying to get out there and get back into photography. Photo I took from my room at the Ritz Carlton, Cancun, Mexico.
