I have a pet theory about sharpness. We make a lot of fuss about “which camera?” and “which lens?”... but I think more in terms of what I call ‘perceived sharpness’. That is... if a pic looks sharp, then, basically, it is sharp (no matter what any lens bench-test might suggest). ‘Perceived sharpness’ may rely on something as simple as shooting a well-lit subject against a darker background, like the pic below. The subject will appear to ‘come forward’ in the pic, and it will seem ‘sharper’.

‘Perceived sharpness’ isn’t something I’ve read about. But we evaluate images with the eyes in our heads, so, IMO, these are the instruments to trust. I use a Nikon D200 and (for 99% of shots) the ‘kit’ 18-70mm lens (which, though it gathered good reviews, is regarded by many photographers as little better than a toy). Looking at the exposure info on the mountain/lake shot, it was taken, hand-held, at 1/160sec at f9 (ironically, perhaps the only shot I’ve posted here for the past few months that wasn’t taken with a tripod)...

Hand-held??? Doylem?? I don't believe it. I think someone hacked into Doylem's account here, we must contact the moderators.
 
I really like doylem's photo. (previous page, quoted in last post)

Infrared on a Dslr using two pieces of slidefilm as a filter. Slidefilm must be developed BUT unexposed. For exposure i used a tripod, remote and a stopwatch.

I often come in way too late on these to go through everyone's photo, but ComputersaysNo, damn man, that is stunning.

Sigma 70-200

1st shots with new lens. What a difference for stop action. Of course now I want to get more of the lower Aperture lenses. Keep saving money.
