That building almost looks like a toy next to those mountains!

I made my weekly stop at the office today just in time for the bosses to be outside BS'ing, so I joined in. Just then this guy came in and landed. I quickly jumped in my truck, grabbed my camera, swapped lenses (forgot the CPL filter:mad:) then started creeping up on him. I got a couple nice shots of him standing at the edge of the water before he decided I was too close. This is the best I got of him flying away.

I'll add one of him standing tomorrow then get back to the Montana pics for a few days.

Fabulous. I can't wait to read the story behind this building. It seems to be floating. My first impression was that it was on a barge in an algae filled river.

Dale

Thanks, Dale. It's a private church in South Tyrol dedicated to St. Johann Nepomuk (St. John Nepomucene). It was built in 1744. I had it on my "to do" list for a long while before I finally got the opportunity to point a camera at it. The golden color of the larches in the hills makes autumn the best time to photograph the church, in my opinion.

This could be a shot from a Pixar film, perfect light and setting.
The building looks like a toy, great shot.

Thanks to you both. I think its toy-like quality comes not only from its small size (made all the more diminutive by the grandness of its setting) but also from its leaning tower, which makes it look all wonky, like one of those puzzle toys that comes free with candy. :p

Just got back from a 2 week trip to Quebec where I had some great nature areas to shoot photos. Went on three different long walks to take photos, and am really disappointed to come back and see that I don't really like any of the photos I took at all. I even got up early one morning to catch the sunrise, but made a mistake in choosing where to go so I ended up getting the sun in the wrong spot. I also decided not to lug around my tripod on this trip, and the lack of it really killed a lot of my opportunities. Oh well, it was not a photo-trip and I had a great time anyway. Here is one shot that shows the colours of the trees in the area I was at:

here is a link to a bigger size version if anyone cares.

PS. I caught some flack last month for posting a photo that turned out to be quite big. I exported this one to 33% of the original size and it shows up fine in my web browser. However, if for some reason it shows up as huge for you guys then please let me know and ill edit it again.

Yeah, its pretty big. I'd resize to 1024 px width.

Hey now, this is the Photo of the Day thread - no CGI or paintings! :D

That picture wants me to find out about the story of the building, the location and the people of the area. More importantly it makes me want to go there. :)

This is perfection like usual. I really really really love your photos, and it makes me happy every time you post something. Any way you could let me know what filters you used for this, and what kind of post-processing you did to it? No worries if you don't want to reveal your methods..

Incredible! A few months ago I had to do a presentation (for my Italian class) on South Tyrol. It's definitely on my list of places to go.

Hehe. Well, see my reply to Dale for some info on the little church. Look into South Tyrol for information on the province and its culture. It's a surreal place for a lot of reasons. Though it's in Italy, it's politically autonomous, the primary language there is German, and the whole region is simply oozing with charm. Definitely a great place to visit.

Wow, thanks so much for the encouragement. :) I'll happily reveal anything that I've done to a photo. I'm not above spending hours in Photoshop to make an image look the way I want, but this particular photo received just about zilch in special post-processing. I made the requisite raw development decisions and applied my usual little hints of vignetting. I almost always add some subtle vignetting to my photos, which I apply manually with a brush in Photoshop, only to really bright areas at the edges of the frame (I use the edge of a big feathered brush, set the opacity to 5%, and dust in some black color where needed). As for filters, I used a 3-stop graduated ND filter, and probably a CPL as well (there is texture in the sky that probably wouldn't be there without a CPL, so I'm going to guess that I used one). That's pretty much it. Nothing fancy on this one. :)

Thanks, mackmgg. A strange assignment for a presentation in an Italian class…a place where everyone speaks German! :p

Hi Phrasikleia. I love your pictures too; always well composed sceneries and stories well presented :)

As for filters, I used a 3-stop graduated ND filter

What brand of graduated ND filter do you use, because I'd like to buy good quality ones. I have 2 low cost Cokin P GND and they do have a strong color cast; they do alter the colors on the red chanel especially.

Thanks and keep feeding our eyes with those lovely scenes ;)

Thanks for the information Phrasikleia. Like the above poster, I'd always love a recommendation for a good filter brand.

The frog reminded me that I had this shot of a baby anole that someone found last weekend.
