Consensus so far is iPhone 11 flashless night shots are finally usable but they have a tendency to be blown out. A brighter shot doesn't necessarily mean a better shot if it ruins the mood like 6:24 in iJustine's video. Also, dark night sky and skin tone tend to be overly yellow. And, HDR isn't as good as Pixel Night Sight gen 1 (7:14) with gen 2 coming next month.

Amazing advancement though that blown out flashless night shot on mobile phone is a thing in 2019.

I disagree completely. On both your examples, iPhone 11 Pro blew Pixel's out of the water. They're the exact photo you'll want to get if you shoot them with camera with very high sensitive film/sensor (& with tripod).
Btw, iPhone 11 Pro photo on both examples are not "blown out". Learns about what blown out means. The word you're looking for is "bright". You may say it's too bright. I'll say it's enoght bright to get all the details.
The way the Pixel photo happened like that on 6:24 is not because its brightness on point but because it's lack a capability to do high HDR on dark scene.
And colour accuracy is also on point on iPhone 11 Pro while Pixel is too blueish which show its white balance in dark scene is not up to the new iPhone standard.
What these comparisons show is that the current Pixel would never get that fisherman shot as good as iPhone 11 Pro.

I feel like the same camera story gets reposted every single year, just swapping the model names. Every iPhone takes terrific pictures until the next year's model is released, and then the no-longer-new model apparently sucks while the NEW-new-model takes amazing photos... until this time next year.
Photographers carefully avoid situations where results may be dissatisfactory (or just plain unacceptable). This is why, for example, it would have been pointless to shot pics in very dark environments before night mode came around.

But there's definitely a progression every year even if each scenery is carefully chosen or staged.

True. But it has nothing (or very little) to do with the camera and everything to do with the photographer. The picture was carefully staged. It would look good if it was taken with a disposable camera. The same is true for other pictures.

Nope. It has everything to do with the camera because this one was not shot using tripod, hence only a few cameras with modern and capable Night Mode will be able to. Looks at the sky. It's almost completely dark (there's no highlight you can see).

I’m so tired of seeing those pictures of fake fishermen in Guilin, China. They make money from posing for photos everyday, not fishing.

How can you possibly have a problem with this? Someone lost their livelihood and found a way to still make money doing what they love.

What's your problem with it? Do you also hate actors and models?

From my understanding, don't use the extra-wide lens unless you have no room to step back. The wide lens seems to be better for low light because of the higher aperture.

Night Mode is impressive, so much that it makes your one year-old $1k+ iPhone XS look like trash.

To be perfectly honest, all this praise for the new camera module sure as heck makes me want to order one... then I wake up to reality and realize the XS Max is already an incredible phone and as of right now I don't take too many pictures. Dang Apple marketing.

This. I take lots of photos of my kids, but we’ve been here before. The X I have in my hand was said to have a better screen, battery and cameras than previous iterations. Plus, with AppleCare+ I had this replaced a few months back. It’s like new. I like new and better, but I’m struggling to reason with the expenditure of upgrading.

Especially when I’d want more than 64Gb and Apple are still pricing that prohibitively.

It is always interesting to see this reviews, although a professional photographer always takes better pictures because is using a tripod or just because of his experience in composing a scene. I do prefer amateur reviews with pictures not as stunning as the ones we saw in this review but closer to the shots I'd take.

Most people can’t see any significant difference with the picture taken by iPhone 11 Pro because it isn’t much better than one lens. The majority of customer won’t be upgrading to the iPhone 11 Pro with only minor improvements and it also look less appealing with 3 lenses.

Why iJustines photos are so blown out I cant tell

I think ican.

its been mentioned the iPhone switches to a more standard long exposure mode when on a tripod rather than handheld, That video had both phones on a tripod.

Of all the handheld shots i've seen so far the iPhone is taking much better shots.

The ultra-wide cannot do night mode because it doesn't have the required 100% focus pixels. This is also why night mode won't come to older iPhones.

I dont see any consensus on that? Most of the reviewers speak of a tendency of a very natural night mode, only enhancing the scene. Why iJustines photos are so blown out I cant tell. But chances are, that there is a possibility to adjust brightness in this mode and as the Apple fanboy that she is she chose to show off how much stuff the night mode can uncover. None of the other pictures Ive seen show any craziness within her video.

I would say the pictures are oversaturated though. But at least thats fixable since no data has been lost at that point.
This is my thoughts. Her photos look pretty poor, not that the Pixel's look better. You see her saying she's setting the exposure to maximum while using the iPhone, so that'll be why. Why she can't just let the pictures do their own thing, I don't know.

I wish I had the energy or the memory haha to go back and look at posts of people who said “ugly phone. terrible update.” who are now changing their tune because of the actual reveal and now all of the reviews.

Same thing with the Apple Card. This happens every year Lol.

Some great tech, but there has to be a point where somebody decides its more cost effective to buy a lesser model iphone and a proper DSLR camera. If your semi-serious about photography, surely this makes sense?

If you care about zoom you could get an 11 and a bridge camera for about the price of an 11 Pro. Then you have optical zoom up to 20x not just 2x

Why didn’t he post the original pictures? Downscaled most pictures looks better... Show me these filling up my 32“ display, probably too bad in original size.
