The photos posted on flickr are just astounding and breathtakingly gorgeous. This is a huge step up from the iPhone X. The camera alone is worthy of the upgrade this year.

I’m more disappointed with the photographer than the camera. Mostly oversharpened and over saturated. Composition is alright, but definitely could have done a better job. Looking forward to some more technical reviews side by side with the X and the competition.

Why is there a bright blue dot in the last photo?
Lens flare - it shows up in many of the pics with the Sun in the shot.
It shows up on a line drawn through the center of the pic at the same distance as the Sun is from the optical center of the pic. It will also show up with bright light sources at night.
I'm surprised there isn't a Sun-in-frame flare remover add-on to Red-eye Reduction processing.
It should be pretty easy to implement with all that processor power available now.

Can a photo expert tell me why these are great? They don’t “look” exceptional to me, but I’m just a civilian.
I would say that these are competent and professional quality, but they aren't exceptional, as in iconic. You can see things as technically impressive and even more so if more processing has been applied. These are very good for one camera, one exposure, out of a phone.

What a great gig for a photographer!
Some of the pics aren't very complimentary to the camera - the fish swimming, the shells on the beach and the blue wood all have technical issues as seen on the Flickr site at full-size. Many of the pics show that the camera has promise.
I expect the processing done by the software will get better over time.

ill give it to Apple, as a photographer my £3000 Canon 5D Mark iv doesn't even get the same photos my X does... the X actually takes amazing shots on auto I sometimes rather use phone in good lighting than my DSLR so the new phone will be even better than a great camera.

Do you earn a decent living being a photographer or do your just call yourself one after buying a camera 10 years ago?

Reason I ask is because everyone with an iPhone is a photographer these days.
I have a 5D mark iv and I do wedding bar mitzvahs and events so yeah im a pro I shot some stuff for London fashion week, read my last post I think its gonna be amazing

That's been an issue with iPhones forever now, I simply don't understand the need for such heavy NR. A little grain in the picture isn't a bad thing, give me some grains + sharpness over this horrible NR any day! This is why I only shoot RAW when the picture I'm taking really matters for quality and flexibility.

Precisely why I don't use my iPhone for photography much. Noise isn't a big deal, I can do some NR if I need to. I understand why they do it though. It makes it simple for the end user. Do you know of any third party camera apps that don't apply such heavy NR?

They're already married to the camera bump, so why not put a bigger sensor in there to help with the noise?

There isn't a single photo shown here that was shot in low light conditions, a night portrait (which my iPhone 8 absolutely blew), indoors, or with the front camera. Why is that, I wonder.

I work as an editor (film & tv) - The details in the highlights like the sun are more apparent, while at the same time showing details in the shadows that normally would not appear because the sun would blow out the shot's exposure etc.

Thanks. I’m upgrading from a 6S. I was always disappointed it didn’t have OIS. A benefit I can really see. Some of the other improvements I know are there but I didn’t really see/understand. Might be time for some photography classes.

Impressive shots. Waiting for iPhone Xs vs X v Pixel comparisons. Those should be interesting. Maybe even an Xr v Pixel to see which single camera Bokeh photos look better

The portrait/bokeh effect is a joke. Please look at the photo of the yellow can and look at the top of the can. https://www.flickr.com/photos/petapixel/43831801325/in/album-72157699852263981/

All this bokeh effect is doing is detecting people/objects, cutting around them and artificially blurring the background with generally poor results.

Ask yourself why the new XR with a single lens camera still has this bokeh feature when it isnt able to produce proper depth maps like the dual camera models are capable of. It’s because the bokeh effect really isnt using a proper depth map to detect objects.

Also look at the photo with the man wearing sunglasses. https://www.flickr.com/photos/petapixel/44691193082/in/album-72157699852263981/

The reflected image in his sunglasses should be blurred but it’s sharp even though the reflected objects are at distance, as the image processor has simply masked the whole man and blurred the rest.

This effect does a diservice to the legacy of great photography on iphones. Iphones were always a great introduction to the workd of photography for young people or first timers. Now it’s just teaching people not to have respect or understanding for the basic principles of photography and instead leading them towards cheap, lazy gimmicks.
