Photomator 3.0 today got its official release on macOS, bringing Pixelmator's iPhone and iPad photo-editing app to MacBooks and Mac desktops for the first time.

With an interface that will be familiar to users of Photomator on iOS and iPadOS, the Mac app includes a fully fledged photo browser with native Photos app integration, allowing users to organize, duplicate, share, and favorite images, as well as sync edits between Photomator and the Photos Library.

The app includes nondestructive tools to crop images, adjust colors, or repair and clone objects in photos, and users can edit specific parts of photos and make automatic subject, sky, and background selections.

According to the developers, machine learning algorithms enable users to increase the resolution of photos without noticeable reductions in detail or sharpness, match the colors of two photos, and remove camera noise. Photomator for Mac also supports batch-editing workflows and includes a Workflows browser, allowing users to crop images, adjust colors, and automatically apply edits to other images.

The app includes support for over 600 RAW image formats, and features built-in integration with Pixelmator Pro, which supports many Photomator edits, including selection masks and perspective corrections.

Apple Silicon should also bring a boost to Photomator workflows. Built for macOS using SwiftUI, the app runs on Mac mini models with M2 Max and M2 Pro chips more than 20 times faster compared to the most recent Intel-powered Macs, claim the developers.

Photomator for Mac is available to download today from the Mac App Store and offers a subscription model ($29.99 yearly, $4.99 monthly) or a lifetime purchase fee ($99.99).

Bought in users of the app (from when it was called pixelmator photo) are grandfathered in to the lifetime licence option, which is nice, but only for the ipad version, not the desktop version. There was supposed to be special pricing on all the subscription options (including the lifetime) for grandfathered in users, have we seen that yet?

Remembering the days when only Photoshop was in town, "kids" these days have a plethora of options, which is great. There's some stunning, reasonably-priced apps today that we could only have dreamed about a decade ago.

My only pet peeve about some of these apps is that they neglect things like printing options. Many pros like to have hard copies of their photos, and many like to sell their prints. Lightroom has solid printing options, whereas alternatives like Photomator rely only on the Mac's built-in printer settings.

Once you try to crop a photo for printing or want to print several photos on to the same paper, you will quickly find the Mac dialogue doesn't help at all. Any cropping or fill-page cannot be adjusted: you have to rely on Apple's default. This makes printing a bit of a chore.

When you open the updated photomater app on iOS it gives you the option for 50% off the first year of the annual subscription. It didn't say anything about a discount for lifetime.

macOS 13 Ventura is required....
I guess I'm sh*t out of luck since my old iMac only supports up to Monterey.

Once I’m on my home laptop, I’ll check, but when pixelmator first announced the subscription and the mac version they said that they were looking to provide a discounted lifetime subscription option for grandfathered in user to get the mac version. I’ve held off buying the lifetime sub at the cheaper price because of this. If it’s not going to be offered then I’ll be annoyed…
