Do the Photos "live" in Apple Photos or within Photomator? when you make an update in Photomator does it save another JPG/TIFF (if a RAW file to begin with) and import back INTO Photos?
Photomator integrates with Photos library perfectly! If you shoot RAW edit ONLY in Photomator. In that case Photomator saves the edits in the original file (Asks for authorization each time, a bit a annoying but that’s an Apple thing). Non destructive edits. PM also saves a .photo file in it’s own folder in iCloud, containing all edits. As Long as you don’t delete that file all edits Sync between iOS and macOS and are non destructive.
The files can get really big though.
If you are done with your edits just delete the .photo file in the PM folder. Won’t affect the original in Photos and you can always revert to the original in Photos.
PM has totally replaced Lightroom for me! Amazing App!

I am glad more companies are shaking the Adobe monopoly. At one point I thought photoshop and illustrator are so advance no one can write a competing app.

Hope to see more decentralization in the future and more options

I was able to download Photomator Pro for Mac for free. I have not yet purchased a subscription or made any in-app purchases (except for Photomator for iOS 1-2 years ago), but I cannot find any limitations. I see the options to purchase/subscribe in the menu, but when I try to restore a purchase, I receive an error message. How do I determine if there are any missing features?

Edit: I have found out: the first 10 edits are free for all new users.

I never understood what Lightroom is good for either. Photoshop and Illustrator are useful Adobe apps.
Lightroom, and Aperture, Photos, Capture One, and several others are DAMs...Digital Asset Management.
Photoshop and thus Pixelmator Pro are one-off editors.

DAMs are great to see a library of photos, you can make some simple edits, copy those to a multitude of images, Tag Photos with Keywords, and organize into multiple "folders". These edits are generally non-destructive in nature and are merely a recipe added to the photo so when viewed in your DAM you can quickly see these changes, think of it as a library with LIVE edits.

Usually with Photoshop you edit a phot and those edits are baked-in. Sure you can add layers and have some "live edits" but many edits would require duplicate layers of the image and increase file size. Yes, you can create Actions and make copies of those edits to photos. but DAMs are much easier and they are extremely useful for Photo Organization & Minor Edits compared to Major Editing go Photoshop.

Not sure if that explained it better or made it more confusing.

FINALLY! My favorite photo editing app. It's such a great iPad app but having it on mac too is a great bonus.

Edit: Cannot be installed because it requires macOS 13 or greater.........

Completely agree.
So nice integrate with the Photos library.
And so much more cost effective than the Adobe behemoths.
It’s not quite as good yet but getting there and plenty good for most people.

Good explanation. I didn’t know Lightroom was non-destructive.

For now Photos does a good enough job for me. I don’t want to spend too much time managing a library, which wouldn’t fit on my SSD anyway. So I dump all photos on an external drive and never look at them again. Probably not the best solution. 😅

I’ve now had a play with Photomator and to be honest, as it stands right now, I’m disappointed.

It’s my go-to editor on the iPad, but is just that - an editor. There are loads of alternatives in that space. On the Mac I want more. It edits far better than Photos (low bar there) but so do loads of others. For similar cost I can have the likes of ON1 Raw, which in addition to great editing has decent (if not exceptional) asset management capabilities.

Perhaps version 4, or 5…

Most people don’t need more than Apple Photos. It’s now pretty decent. Some of the DAM capabilities could definitely be improved and the interface is awkward. But it is good enough for most.
And a backup you are making on an external drive, combined with the iCloud backup inherent in Photos is a good enough solution too.

Deleted my post for redundancy. I found the answer to my question within the thread.

Lifetime means version "3" lifetime, I doubt it will transfer to "4"

probably with some miserable discount.. please correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Isn’t that what lifetime purchases have always meant?

You buy Office 2016 as a “lifetime” purchase and you’ll buy Office 2019 again as one. You don’t expect to get free upgrades to new versions into perpetuity.

to be fair to wilee, when you're buying a lifetime licence option of a subscription model, then I would certainly expect it to cover multiple versions of the software because the monthly/yearly sub would.

In this case I would expect the lifetime license for Photomator to cover version 4, 5 and onwards as long as they make the software and continue to sell subs...

That makes sense and I would agree.

Yes, that totally makes sense but I cannot recall this happening in reality :( that is why I stopped purchasing ”full price” versions
