My solution wasn't optimal, but it appears to have fixed Photos crashing:

1. Boot into recovery mode (Command-R)
2. Install macOS from cloud (in my case, it downgraded/reverted me to macOS 10.13.1 beta...)
3. De-register your Mac from getting betas
4. Upgrade to macOS 10.13.1 release

So, in summary, I think it's an issue with a hanging process (maybe) in Photos that comes with 10.13.2 beta.

I believe there is new build of 10.13.2 beta, but I'm not sure - I couldn't deal with it any more.

(as an aside I used up about 120GB of data yesterday messing with this and the related all-photos-disappearing-from-my-iPhone debacle).

anyone on the new beta 2 know if the crash has been fixed??

Just installed 10.13.2 PB 2 and can confirm Photos is no longer crashing on my Mac. Oddly, my iPad was stuck downloading a few photos for the last few days and it only updated today as well.

Lends credence to the suspicion that iCloud Photo Library may have been undergoing some under the hood maintenance.

In any case, we shouldn’t be shocked... after all, this is beta software. However, it does freak me out a bit that a simple tweak on a server-side implementation can cause a full application crash. These types of things really should be caught in the alpha phase!

Wow thanks for the info. Im skeptical since there were periods on beta 1 where it was indeed no crashing (for instance, after setting up and restoring my library while it updated/synced). Once it was done with that process, crashing started again. Also, there were some other times it wouldn’t crash.

But I’m installing beta 2 now so I’ll update the thread with my findings tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that it was localized to beta 1 and not a server side issue that could come up again with beta 2.

I'm running Beta 2 now and for the last 60 minutes Photos.app did not crash while running.

But: although it says "syncing / uploading photos" there have been no updates in my macOS photo library so far and the photos of the last 2 days have not been synced. Hmm.. o_O

Interesting... I would give it a few more days with the hope that the kinks will work themselves out. Otherwise, you may need to disable (and re-enable) iCloud Photo Library on the affected device. Are the updates being processed on your other devices?

Sooo... Photos sync perfectly between iPhone, iPad and iCloud itself. That's at least a little bit reassuring since the iCloud library itself seems to be okay.

I'll let the MacBook run overnight, we'll see if there's any update to the library.

Do your (new) photos sync successfully to your Macbook?

My Photos.app hasn't crashed once since updating to Beta 2 (running for about 12 hours), but while the app status is showing "Uploading 43.829 objects..." (don't know if thats the correct translation since I'm using macOS in German) and slowly making progress, I'm not seeing any new photos from the last 6 days.

My new i27 that just got delivered a couple days ago and of course photos crashing... loaded all my photos from Time Machine from old iMac 2011 ok so i got that going for me.. sigh... now if I could just look at them for longer than a few seconds or sometimes a whole min.... When is Beta 2 ready for the rest of us I am wondering?

Right after I replied I did one more photo library rebuild and hasn't crashed since...yet.. I was even able to load about 50 photos...it did freeze once when I was editing fast, but forced quit, reopened and all is ok again. Interesting... and thanks for the info

I'm running straight 10.13.1 and its crashing for me too. Not sure it has anything to do with the betas but hopefully it will be fixed for the release.

I'm running 10.13.2 Beta 4 now (17C79a) and Photos.app hasn't crashed a single time in the last few days.

Better yet: my whole library is now in sync again on the Mac (after a long and tedious syncing process for 43.000 photos). Wooo!

I had recently transferred my iPhotos library to Photos after finally upgrading to High Sierra on a Macbook Air. After the initial transfer, I had to repair the photo library a few times (open Photos + OPT + CMD) but it worked. Then I started having problems. Seemed to be related to OS updates.

Photos would crash after about 15 seconds. After the usual attempts listed in this thread didn't work, I finally placed a call to Apple Customer Service and spent 1.5 hours on the phone. Here's what we did and what finally worked (Option 4). I hope this helps someone else.

HOW TO FIX CRASHING PHOTOS APPLICATION -OS High Sierra

OPTION 1

Repair Library

1. CMD + OPT + open Photos and select library to repair

2. Wait to see if Photos crashes

OPTION 2

Create a Test Library

1. Take a screen shot - CMD + Shift + 4

2. Open Photos + OPT

3. Select Create New

4. Import the screen shot

5. Wait to see if Photos crashes

OPTION 3

Create a New User

1. Create a New User: System Preferences > Users & Groups > click lock to make changes > enter Admin password >
click + and fill out form > click Create User

2. Open Photos app

3. Wait to see if Photos crashes

OPTION 4

Repair Home Folder Permissions

1. Export photos from Photos app to an external hard drive.

2. Repair home folder permissions:

a. Go to Finder > Go > Home

b. Select File > Get Info

c. Click open Sharing and Permissions

d. Click on lock to unlock

e. Click gear (Action Menu) > Apply to enclosed items…

f. Got to Applications folder > Utilities > Terminal

g. Type or paste the following in the terminal window and click return:

diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

h. When process finishes, quit Terminal

3. Open Photos app and click Option

4. Select Create New > Name Library and choose location

5. Go to File > Import > locate photos from external hard drive and select

6. Click Review for Import

7. Locate old Photos Library and delete

8. Restart computer

how the hell do you fix this damn app? I tried everything from repairing the photos library to reinstalling the operating system.

The last thing that I want to attempt is to export the photos from my library and then import them into a new library, but it always begins it's never-ending "hang crash" after 10 seconds of opening. My Console log for the photos "hang crash."

ETC ETC.

I have the same issue for the last few days, latest beta. Started when my iCloud became full, mostly with photos, and I switched of photo sync. I was told to download my photos from icloud.com, but I can not manually select all 31K photos to download them. pita. So I wanted to copy them from my photos app to be sure I have them safe.
