So they are basically copying Google Photos, but not all of the features and charging for something (photo storage) that Google provides for free. Seriously this looked like a minor update to Google Photos, but then there are still some missing feature.

But then it doesn't work with the Photos app, which is definitely not as good as Google Photos anyway.
Google doesn’t store full resolution photos for free. They compress them.

Nice updates, but I’m using Google Photos until Apple offers more free storage.

Me: Hey Apple can I have some more storage since I buy your premium phones that take great pics?

Apple: We made a $1,000 monitor stand for you.

Me: ...

It's only 99 cents for 50GB.

I do not take many photos on my phone, but plenty with a camera. These are kept on my iMac in folders of my choice in Pictures, not in the iMac's Photos app. From here I sync them to our iPhones and iPads (and Home Share to Apple TV). This keeps my folder/album structure.

Will I be able to do this in IOS 13?

Definitely hidden from other people. My back surgery healing process is very well documented, and I like to keep it private. There’s so many personal photos that people take, and it seems that Apple is out of touch with the fact that many photos are personal in nature, and not for younger or everybody’s eyes.

Do so many people not set passcode/touchID/faceID on their phones? How are so many people having others able to look at their un-shared pictures in the first place?

Any number of first and third-party things on my phone I wouldn't want anyone to be able to get into, I don't understand the fascination with protecting just Photos, vs simply having authentication on the device itself. No one who just picks my device up can get into it in the first place.

Family sharing is what keeps my family and I locked into Google Photos. Every time a new photo is added to my Google Photos account, my wife can see it (and vice-versa). As far as I can tell, there is no way to automatically accomplish this using Apple’s photo products. I strongly encourage Apple to make this simple *OPTION* available to its’ iCloud customers.

I wish Apple would implement this. My family wants the same option as wel. I feel like it will fragment things too much if I move to Google Photos, but that’s probably nonsense and I should just do it. Right now I have to go on to my wife’s computer and manually upload all my photos to the Photos App associated with her Apple ID. Boooo.

Family Sharing doesn't do this? Well, another reason not to bother with iCloud Photo Library, then.

You’ve never handed your phone over to someone to show them a photo and have them immediately start swiping through, only to wonder how long ago you took that photo of the weird rash? Conversely, do you want your doctor accidentally seeing photos of your vacation?

Really wish they would offer the same features of the photo app i had on my old jail broken iPhone. I could remove photos from the reel and add them to folders. Organization was perfect. They’ve turned it into a mess, feels like I’m using android lol

I’m not mad at this update other than CameraRoll-gate of course. Would be cool to see a Mail-like function where you can swipe to archive into a folder for later organization

Based on the comments thus far I have reached 2 conclusions...
1) Apple designed the new Photos app for people like me
2) I represent a minority of camera users on this thread

I have taken tons of photos on my XS Max and previous iPhones. I love the camera and I rarely edit the photos. I share some of them with friends and family and on occasion I will use a photo I have taken in a document or presentation. I enjoy scrolling through my photos once in a while and reliving vacations, graduations, parties, and other events. I love what Apple has done with this app as it fits my needs (and I am guessing the majority of users) very well. However, it appears to be lacking some more advanced features / flexibility that a lot of people on this thread would like to see.

Thank you. You saved me from typing out the obvious to posguy99

Really enjoy how some say Google Photos is "free" and unlimited. It's not. Nothing is free. It also compresses your images. Also let's be real here, the majority of people take hundreds of photos, never to look at them again. So what's all the drama about? Google doesn't have your back. You're a product. Let that sink in for a bit.

If you're buying an iPhone and you can't justify an extra 99 cents or 2.99 a month for cloud storage, you may want to re-evaluate your buying/photo taking habits.

Go through your photos, do you really need 6 photos of little johnny doing the same thing? How many of you take pictures of things so you don't have to write it down? Or pictures to share but are not something memorable to keep? Yeah, clean it out.

Imagine if a picture was brick stored in your house. How quickly they would pile up. Do you really need all of them?

Gaaarr yet another major iOS release and *still* no ability to sync all family photos to the same library through iCloud?

Why can't my wife, kids and I sync our iPhone photos to a single family Photo album?

How is this not an iCloud feature?? We want a single photo library that is available on all our devices (Apple TV, Macs, iPads, iPhones). Right now there is *no easy way* to do this.

PS I understand not everyone would want to do this. Once my kids reach a certain age I certainly don't want to see their pics :). But it should at least be an option!

all people really wanted was to be able to tag photos and name them so that they'd be searchable like on every computer in existence. But noooooooo Apple has to try to reinvent the wheel with a square block using "machine learning" to try to organize them based on some algorithm into "Memories" and "Moments".
When will this madness with the photos app end?
I fear not ever
I’m blown away that this can’t be done. They’re so many crazy ways to view photos and I care nothing for them. Why is this so hard to do? I can title them on a Mac, then search on the phone.

I just want a “not in album” type or smart folder so I can more easily organize my photos on iOS!

Until then I have to do this on Mac.

That's all I want to, which is what I was hoping would be added. Having to use the mac too :(

Keywords, how is that so hard!
Come on Apple. Aperture had keywords, Lightroom has keywords, even Photos on the mac has keywords. Can’t search for them on IOS though☹️
Yes you can.
You can search all your keywords easily on iOS. BUT you cannot create new ones nor tag using your iOS photos - you need mac to do this.

Can anyone confirm if the interface of adding a photo to an existing photostream on the iPad has improved?

So no improvements on "people" and manually adding faces to photos that dont recognize a face automatically? Nor modifying metadata such as the location or date of a photo?

This is my major sticking point! Let me tag more "Faces" of people in my photos! Also, why is there not a single button to take me through all of the unidentified faces in my pictures? I realize this will take forever and a day to get through them all, but I'd like to do it over time. And let me un-tag faces of people in the background that I don't know, or people I don't want tagged.

Yeah, same issue here. I held out hope through a couple Betas it'd get added, but it looks pretty unlikely at this point. Like some others here, I'd been using Google Photos (paid with Original quality) which is fantastic. But they announced they're ending automatic Sync to a desktop as of July 10th, so even that's not an option anymore.

I guess I'll use Lightroom and Adobe Cloud, but I'm still surprised it's not an option in iCloud Photos. It doesn't seem that hard to let Photos use a different iTunes account from the main one: they already do that for the App Store.
